Took a tour of this home twelve years ago and fell in love. The basement art gallery led to the garden and from there the views of the water were magnificent. The art, decor, layout, landscaping, and views were very memorable and instilled a feeling of joy and peace. My favorite home on earth so far.
I never realized that Spelman college was his wife's family name. This is a fascinating history and beautiful filmmaking. The house is lovely but the outdoor sculpture collection is stupendous. I wish there was more time spent in the magnificent landscape. Some drone footage would be really great.
My dad sold my grandmothers Bar Harbor property to John D. Rockefeller Jr. He had great taste too bad today's wealth doesn't have appreciation of classical and contemporary art.
I had the pleasure visiting about 10 years ago and I can say I didn't find one weed in those beds. It was so pristine and beautiful. I will once again return in a couple of years of sooner.
It's a magnificent estate, but when you tour it, you're bound by all sorts of restrictions: "Don't go here, you can overlook a still private family home; don't go there, it's offices or still used by the Foundation/family." When I went, we couldn't see anything but the 1st floor and basement galleries plus the carriage house and some of the grounds. Still, it's worth seeing.
That follows all the same doctrines of the Brandywine Valley duPont homes. It does not diminish any of the tours what so ever if you follow many of them as a member, they are always changing the interior scenery and addind to gardens and having new parts of the estates become accessible. Make them your treasures as well, involve yourself if you are local and be amazed at what new items become rotated through the rooms.
hmmm, I don't remember feeling like this. But that was twelve years ago and our tour guide was my best friend's mom who worked there, maybe the time you go and tour guide make a difference.
That garden is So beautiful. Love it what a sanctuary to escape to and enjoy nature. I love those Secret Gardens back in the old days, just don't seem them anymore! ⛲️💐🌿🌹🌸🌱🏵🌷🍀
This home is AWESOME! Classy and timeless... I'm a realtor in LA and not many homes are that well preserved, In fact, I've seen many ugly multi-million dollar homes, so just cause it is expensive does not make it good.
It's beautiful that house and I'm glad the Rockefeller family still live there because if your family have such a magnificent house it's make sense to inhabit it
Absolutely majestic state! A true family house filled with love and admiration towards the fine art! Enchanting and very, very inspiring! Congratulations!
The original Dutch has been "Americanized".... It should be _"kijkuit"_ and means "watch out"... As far as I know... When you can afford to have staff in the position of "maids maid" you know you've made it! 🤭🤭 But what a place!! 👍👍🥰🥰
I love the historical architecture! It's also great the tour of this lovely home comes with a brief, albeit well-scripted biography. Clients who love properties like these typically want to reside in communities that have well-established histories. Since I study historical properties, I know where a lot historical properties are located.
"Kykuit" is closer to Afrikaans than Dutch. The Dutch would spell it 'Kijk uit', two words, which means 'look out'. In Afrikaans "kyk" also means 'look' and "uit' means 'out' and since it's an aggregation, "Kykuit" literally means "Lookout" and should theoretically be pronounced as 'cake eight' in American English - certainly not "kike cut"! I must add that "kykuit" is not an actual Afrikaans aggregation, nor Dutch, and the closest meaningful equivalent would be 'pasop' (pas op = watch out). Semantics, yes, but the name Kykuit is unique and not a word that exists in that specific form in either Dutch nor Afrikaans (perhaps Flemish?), so I guess if Americans want to call it "kike cut" it's all good.
Yeah it sounds more Flemish(kijk uit!), but Kykuit is written in old Dutch. Dutch now uses ‘kijk’, while old Dutch/Flemish uses ‘kyk’. Africans didn’t invade USA, whereas the Dutch did invade part of USA in the past. So I’m thinking it has more to do with the Dutch or Flemish than the Africans.
I am an English speaking South African and was going to make the comment that the Afrikaans translation says it perfectly when I saw your entry. I had the privilege of visiting the property a few years ago, it is beautiful, thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent art and was interested to learn so much more about the Rockefeller family and their philanthropic work and love for art. I’m curious as to the Interior Design…and if White*Allom of London were involved..as they were then the go-to designers of the day. The marble mantel piece’s and carved over mantels are their trademark. They also did interior design for the Widener’s, Stotesbury’s, Frick, Huntington Library, and many such great houses in the USA. Does anyone know?
So Kykuit is actually comes from Afrikaans. Kyk means "look" and uit means "out". So "look out" referring to the view possibly. It's also being mispronounced here. Correct pronounciation would sound like 'cake eight'.
I don't know why the Rockefeller Family would have used an Afrikaans word. What I do know is that "Kykuit" is closer to Afrikaans than Dutch, yes, I agree with you. The Dutch would spell it 'Kijk uit', two words, which means 'look out'. In Afrikaans "kyk" also means 'look' and "uit' means 'out' and since it's an aggregation, "Kykuit" literally means "Lookout" and should theoretically be pronounced as 'cake eight' in American English like you mentioned - certainly not "kike cut"! Semantics, yes, but the name Kykuit is unique and not a word that exists in that specific form in either Dutch nor Afrikaans. In Afrikaans we would rather say "uitkyk".
They gave a lot to charity and their house still stands. How many grand houses built by selfish people have been torn down? A lot. The charitable families are the ones who keep going on.
"Kykuit" is closer to Afrikaans than Dutch: where "kyk" means 'look' and "uit' means 'out' and since it's an aggregation, "Kykuit" literally means "Lookout" and should be pronounced similarly to 'cake eight' in American English. I must add that "kykuit" is not an actual Afrikaans word and the closest meaningful equivalent would be 'passop' - a totally different energy)
Its a shame that it became a museum and that it isn't lived in by members of the family still today. Many English stately homes have remained in private hands for hundreds of years and are still lived in by the family. I can't think of any stately American estate that has remained a private home. Biltmore and other Vanderbilt homes are now museums as well. Gardiner's Island near East Hampton is still privately owned by the same family for about 200 years but they don't and have never resided on the island full time.
Art is as individualistic as a facial expression. It can be harsh, placid, inquisitive and sometimes arrestingly beautiful. Everything Nelson collected especially the outdoor sculpture creates a magnificent moment. You can't help but be awestruck by this collection.
What I love is that the house is beautifull but it's alson a home. Unlike the Breakers Mansion for exemple. which very beautifull too but feel like a museum. (My opinion)
If you adopt a word-from any source- for your unique, particular, esoteric, purpose, you are surely free to pronounce it any bloody way you like. Language is fluid. Please do not take this response as a personal criticism. It is definitely not my intention.
500 million in the 20s and especially the 30s was way way more than 9 billion dollars. Simply go with inflation rate isn’t a real way of comparing money it’s better to look at purchasing power. Loaf of bread then vs now

Same here. As soon as she was introduced, I thought "hmmmm".
My dad sold my grandmothers Bar Harbor property to John D. Rockefeller Jr. He had great taste too bad today's wealth doesn't have appreciation of classical and contemporary art.
Even sadder that today’s wealthy often don’t know when to show up dressed properly. I think you’d agree.
Mount Desert Island estates are absolutely stunning
Bar Harbor is an amazing place
He didn't want to look wealthy.... like dude your house has 20 bedrooms 🤣🤣🤣
🥴🤣
+Max doubled- Yep. He wanted the estate to have an "Understated" look. Hahaha!
Yes but he did try to give away his fortune, one dime at a time.
Small by Vanderbilt standards
Which is probably why he built it away from NY but not to far

Beautiful. I didn't know where Spellman got its name. Thanks ❤️

@@mamarijke - given your name I'm sure you are Dutch, and know better than myself 😉😊👍👍
Thank you all here for the clarification.
I was thinking too , the spelling might seem different.
It's from the time when NY was Dutch colony... it was probably a look out even back then, hence the old Dutch.
I do love and appreciate this video thanks I love antiques God Bless

This works for me, don’t change one thing. Home sweet embraceable Home!
This was a beautiful video!
Thank you for sharing this beautiful mansion..
Beautiful..love the trees,gardens,statues⭐💯♥️
what a location. great joy to see.
Beautiful architecture, great art.
How wonderful! I had no idea what I was missing! I like not even 20 minutes from there and have never visited. I'll have to very soon! Can't wait :)

Kykuit in Dutch / Afrikaans means
"Look out / Lookout".

Rockefeller family??? I should had known😊beautiful estate,lovely garden ❤,thank you for sharing ❤ 😊
Thank you for sharing. Very interesting. Great to hear the positive side of wealth that can be like art and people draw their own conclusions.
Magnificent home
Stunning!
The maids had a maid.
And probably the Butler had a Butler..
That is real money when you can do that....
Very tasteful mansion: not overly ornate
Beautiful!
What a beautiful home
Honestly, this is more beautiful than Versailles! What a gem! Luckies fellas who now own the estate
What's the name of the composer & music title for the background classical music? Thanks! :)

Interesting! I was looking for a pronounciation reflecting nederlands as spoken in Holland.

Look out point would be Uitkijk or better uitzicht. Kijk uit means watch out. A total different energy.

Thank you
I have the feeling that any local artist would have done a better job with the stained glass window commissioned to Matisse....
Yeah, I didn't think his design worked very well in that medium either.
I learned a lot about the Rockefeller family, but little about the estate. I came here to see the estate. Disappointed.
this guy came along now we have to drink through paper straws
Magnifique
Along with Doris Duke's Shangri La, this is such a beautiful thing to do with big money
6:28 The Maids Maid. 😅
Kykuit is indeed Dutch only wrong spelled! It’s kijk uit!
EPIC 🦋
A place God would live, if only he could afford it.

In my option , Nelson's art is a far step down from his grandfathers
I agree
That place must be worth a fortune with all the art.
Art is as individualistic as a facial expression. It can be harsh, placid, inquisitive and sometimes arrestingly beautiful.

I apologise upfront for being a TH-cam nuisance on pronouncing Dutch words. Kyk is pronounced as Cake and Uit as Eight
Die Amerikaanse uitspraak het nogal gekrap op die oor!
If you adopt a word-from any source- for your unique, particular, esoteric, purpose, you are surely free to pronounce it any bloody way you like. Language is fluid. Please do not take this response as a personal criticism. It is definitely not my intention.

Not jealous of no rich or poor person nor do I care to see what they have as that is their path in life on the planet while they are on earth

They're pronouncing it strangely, and not like in Dutch. It should be said cake-ate (well almost like that) than keicut.
😊
It litterly translates to old and new dutch, kyk uit - kijk uit - watch out
How much is the entry fee? Do we get a guided tour of the place?
