Great news. The Comet had little to do with the Cromwell, except for the design experience in building the earlier tank and a few fixtures and fittings. It was essentially a completely new tank, although I can appreciate it does look similar from some angles.
@@SpruesNBrews It's actually quite interesting. The mix of poor and ineffective designs was a scandal that resulted in a board of inquiry that almost brought down the government. Was just up at my local hobby shop for supplies. They just got the P-38J and the Infantry Scout kits in. Had not even been taken out of the shipping cartons. Had them reserve one of each for me. If it was up to me I would not care about lack of detail in the cockpit when most of it is hidden anyways. I like kits that lack some details because it is faster to build. Less small parts.
The Tamiya kit on the top of my wish list would be a 1/48 Sherman M4A4 or British Sherman V it was the main Sherman variant used by the British and Common Wealth countries including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India. I guarantee tamiya Isn't going to retool anything on the comet, it'll be same lower hull from Cromwell, as they did for their last 2 panzer 4 releases, they used the panzer 4 j and h kits lower hull and running gears, for both the pz4 f1 and pz4 g. It's really sad and lazy tamiya can't just retool new parts. Maybe I'm jumping the gun, but they have a history of this stuff. I will definitely pick the figures up and most likely the comet kit too. Thanks hank for the info.
Sure thing - thanks for watching! I'm sure they'll borrow a few parts from the Cromwell, but I bet the sprues will be a new layout. I do like this trend of re-releasing these updates to some extent because at least we're getting new kits, but you're right that a proper 'new' tooling is hard to come by 👍🍻
It's still a little lazy. With computerized design and mold cutting it's easy to update sections of sprues, like cast turret parts or new road wheels. Remember, though, the more new parts in a kit, the higher the price is going to be as costs increase. Monogram's car kits were cheaper because most didn't contain 3-in-1 options and they molded many suspension and engine parts together = smaller parts count.
Charles MacDonald was known in the SOPAC and 5th AF as the guru of air combat. Unlike Bong and some others he was never put on long range "fat cat flights" aimed at raising kill figures (they'd go find Japanese training fields using P-38 extended flying techniques refined by Charles Lindbergh). Instead he led his squadron and for a few weeks was babysitter for Lindbergh when he came out to the Pacific. Lindbergh details this period - including a confirmed kill that no one was told about - in his book Autobiography of Values. While leading and training his pilots MacDonald found time to score ...about...25 victories. He was a fanatic for team work and once observed that if US pilots flew Zeros and Japanese pilots flew P-38s the US pilots would still prevail because they had superior teamwork via the "finger four" (US version of the LW Schwarm). An overstatement, but by 1944 when MacDonald was in his prime US pilot quality greatly surpassed that found in Japanese units Army or Navy. Because of it's very long range and excellent speed at 20,000 feet plus, and it's splendid gun platform, the P38 was a great plane for the Pacific Theater. The last models had dive brakes to fend off compressibility and hydraulic yoke boost to greatly improve the bird's roll rate - the J & L were big improvements over the F - but the F started 5th AF on its way to smashing the IJNAF in New Guinea and later the PI. I've got the P-38F kit unbuilt - that's fine by me because I interviewed several pilots who flew it. This is supposed to be a fantastic kit - maybe I'll want two. And, there are many P-38 kits out - but all are bad.
