Benoit is vastly underrated now and he composed in a unique and personal style. In his rhytmic freedom he was decennia ahead of his time. What's the cause of this neglect? I suspect it is his wish to create a nationalistic Flemish music. In today's Belgium leftist elite abhors everything that reeks of identity.
As far as I could understand from other comments by Belgian people, the problem comes both from left and right: left doesn't love independentists, and right is ashamed of such explicitly independentist statements like Benoit's. No one is so troubled by the composer's ideas when performing the same Wagner's operas for the 1,000th time...
@@SPscorevideos It's rather that the intellectual elites abhor everything that reeks of nationalism, the right wing voters are more in the lower social classes generally and they just don't know classical music in general and Benoit in particular. How could they? His music is never performed and broadcasted. What you say about Wagner is only partially true. Till not so long ago it was forbidden by law to perform W's music in Israël. And even now many leftist minds take offense at wat Wagner thought ( without knowing what he really thought).
