Most respect to you. I moved to UT 2 yrs ago and stated pack packing soon after. I'm 57 and feel i am in the best shape of my life, and after 2 knee surgeries i am blessed to even be able to hike. I used to be a runner and so I really have to pace myself while on trail. The first time I went to Zion I did 27 miles in one day and can tell you the next day was a off day, so i can kinda see what you went through.
Tayson, first off, fantastic job. I have ran ultras before and sooooo relate to what you went through. Might I suggest you rethink your hydration plan. This is why I don't use bladders. You never know how much you have left in them so you can never know if you're getting enough so you always tend to try and reserve, because you don't know. Plus chances are you've got too much in them anyway and you carry around all of the extra weight. I have a hip belt bottle holder that the bottle slides into a holster. And I usually do a hand carry bottle as well after my first aid station. One bottle for water only. The second for nutrition like Hammer perpetuem plus snacks. And this way I can monitor how much I drink and not carry too much. Tayson, you're a class act. Keep up the good work. ( and I love the pillow you sent me)
Yes for sure I've been rethinking my hydration plan! I don't backpack with bladders anymore and I may have to stop running with them as well. Originally I just felt like I missed my marks, but yoru right, when you can visually see the levels of everything you are so much more aware! I may have been able to catch it earlier on and adjust better...Either way I learned a ton and will be heading back this summer to apply what I learned and train even more specifically for an event like this! Thanks!
Thank you, thank you for this sobering information. Being (I think) totally transparent is a real service to (any) fitness community. This goes way beyond just selling cool stuff. Godspeed
Thanks for sharing Taysom. I did one of the Cirque Series mountain runs this summer in Alaska. I’m with you on the steep descents. Painful on the knees and hate the loss of control running down with abandon. But it is great to test and push yourself. Merry Christmas!
@OutdoorVitals Hi hope you're feeling well! Your symptoms of facial twitching, slurred speech, cramps, nausea, may have been medical emergencies. Electrolyte imbalances can quickly decompensate into serious issues. (You might want to educate your audience that these need medical attention 😊). Love, an ER resident
Yes, it was definitely a close balance of emergency and manageable. I would never recommend anyone keeps going in these scenarios. I chose that personally, but I'd never coach someone else to do the same. We'll have to see if we can work that into future content.
Congratulations on Embracing The Suck, after all Ultras are about embracing the good and the bad. And coming out the other side a better human and understanding yourself even better. Again congrats hope to see you take on more challenges 🤙🏽
Tyson, love your videos and they way you stand behind your products by trying this yourself! I am a Maltese outdoor youtuber from Malta and have a question for you, why Outdoor Vitals and most of US brands and shops do not ship to Europe, more specifically Malta Europe ? Thanks for your videos love them.
@@thetaysonwhittaker I literally just searched out 50k races in my area to do on my birthday next year. I’ve never ran a trail in my life, but this totally motivated me to find a challenge! I can’t wait to see your run next year!
We did a video about it a while back, but main takeaways are stay hydrated and the more stress in the body the higher the likelihood of getting... Stress can be physical exercise or lack of sleep!
Just start small & keep it consistent! You don't want to have any long breaks between your runs in order to make progress. Everyone's starting point is different.
My advice would be jump into our Member 100 Challenge that should start taking sign ups in January! The framework we build and physically send to you in there is our best guidance. Other than that, I'd second the other comment here. Start small and don't compare yourself. Don't exceed increasing over 10% in weekly milage. So if you run 5 miles in all of week one, week two only do 5.5ish miles. This becomes more of a rule to not deviate from once you get up to 10+ miles a week!
Order of every ultra is....1. Find an Ultra 2. Signup 3. train 4. Wonder why you signed up 5. Start the race 6. Feel horrible and wonder why on Earth you ever chose to do this race 7. Say you'll never do a race again 8. 48 hours later, find your next race. Nice work out there troubleshooting and getting that finish.
I respect the effort. However, I’m afraid a lot of these people are turning this into more of a sport than a way to relax and enjoy nature. Which is the reason that I go hiking backpack. I have really no concern about how many miles I walk.
Mad Respect sir. When things don’t go the way you want or plan, and you still push through. That’s being a winner
Thanks
It's definitely when you learn the most and grow the most! Thanks!
Thank you for the motivation and video. I am registered for this year’s Tushars 70K.
Good luck!!!
Look forward to seeing your next one. Love your brand I got a bunch.
Thanks for the support!

Awesome breakdown. Impressive perseverance!
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice job Tayson! This was quite the accomplishment and something you should be proud of.
Thanks
Thanks Derek!

Thanks! Yea there were a lot of lessons learned. Hopefully I can get back there and try again with more experience and in better starting condition!
Great story! I agree that many backpackers can do this. What you did you should be bursting with pride for. Great accomplishment!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
Dang man! Nice work! Those shin splints are no joke. Tibialis raises will cure those (opposite of a calve raise, as your raise your toes instead.)
Thanks
Yea I've been doing a whole lot more of Tib work! Still need to work that more through the "off season" haha!

Thanks
Thanks Andrew! We are always developing :)
Respect for sure!
Thanks

Thanks! I would agree with all of that!
GREAT!!! Now I want to run the Tushars Mountain ultra. Hmm, 70k or 100k? Great video!!!
Go for it!
Hey man glad to see you try an ultra! That’s what my channel is all about. I attempted the Wasatch 100 in September. Amazing!!!
Nice! I'll have to go watch it! That one is brutal from what I've seen!

Way to persevere!
When will that OV fast pack be available? I’ve spotted it in a couple of videos so far 😊.
2023 Should bring some news on this :)
Tip- An Avocadao has 10X the potassium as a banana and more than double the calories, ounce for ounce.
Love it! Thanks for the words of wisdom!

Maybe you've already talked about it, but I'm interested in your thoughts on elevation sickness.

wow.
just, wow.
i mean... wow.

any advice for people to START running for those of us who dont currently run?

Badass
As a bigger guy myself, which running pack did you use?
That was our fastpack that's finishing up development right now! Stay tuned for 2023!
