CP Intercidades Review! Portugal's loco-hauled lottery!

  • Up this week, we'll be taking a look at the Portuguese national operator, Comboios de Portugal (CP) and their Intercidades (Intercity) trains. They use two types of coaches and, as you'll see, it's a bit of a lottery as to which type of coach you'll get, as the level of comfort varies drastically between the two!
    Date of Travel: June 2021
    Class of Travel: 1st Class
Rolling Stock: Class 5600 with Corail and Sorefame Modernizada Coaches
    Type of Service: Intercidades
    Train Number: IC720/IC572
    Origin: Porto-Campanhã, Portugal
    Destination: Lisboa Oriente, Lisbon, Portugal
    Cost of Ticket: €45 (£38.10, $52)

Returned yesterday from my first European trip and went with AVLO (Barcelona>Madrid), Alfa Pendular (Lisboa>Porto), and the went the Porto-Pocinho trip bc of your reviews. It is really breathtaking.
    Thank you so much!

I've been on worse trains. The first one looked awesome. The thing that strikes me is the overall cleanliness of the country. Even the underground walkway or tunnel was spotless.

Interesting report. I was in Portugal in October / November 2021 for 2 weeks based partly in Lisbon, partly Porto. The intention was to cover the entire Portugese railway network in 10 days, using a 3 day & 7 day Portugese rail pass. Other than the short branch to Figueira da Foz I managed it, including the remaining metre gauge. Took some planning as I wanted almost all travel to be in daylight and on some routes the service is pretty sparse. Travelled 1st class although other than a few less people there wasn't much difference to standard. Remember only IC and Alpha Pendular services have 1st class anyway. Dylan's experience pretty similar to mine. Bit of a pain that despite having a rail pass it was still necessary to have a ticket for each journey. Having got the rail passes at Lisbon, I presented the ticket office with a list of 52 tickets I wanted. Took an hour to sort those out.

    • @Isochest

Cavaco Silva buggered the metre gauge like the Tua Braganca line that used to carry loads of freight as well as passenger traffic

    Great video!
Cp Intercidades trains are indeed very comfortable and the value for money is great especially when you bought the ticket in advance. The modernized (modernizada) sorefame coaches aren't so bad at all. The legroom might not be as good as the corails but seats at least for my experience are also very comfortable. Also important to mention that the power sockets aren't available in every seat and that a prototype to modernize those coaches and make them wheelchair accessible is being build at Entroncamento workshops.

One more good one. That first train was a keeper. No Dylan, there's never enough rambling on. I'd like to hear a lot more. You could be the next Rick Steves. That underground platform & lift was quite clean & bright. It would be dark, dingy & full of graffiti where I live. It's good that your longer leg of the journey was in the more comfy train. Considering covid- how can the loo not have any soap? That is disappointing. At a quick glance the second train looks pretty similar. Then the disappointments start. Lucky that it was your shorter part of your trip. Thanks for the journey. Looking forward to next Friday. Enjoy!

Couple of clarifications are in order:
    1. There is no lottery in the carriages. Sorefame renovated coaches are used mainly in the Lisbon to Evora/Faro/Guarda routes, rarely being used in other routes. The Corail Coaches being used to the Lisbon to Porto/Braga/Valenca routes. The Sorefame renovated coaches are allocated to the Lisbon Santa Apolonia depot and the Corail Coaches are allocated to the Porto/Contumil depot.
    2. There are also power sockets in the Corail 1st class coaches. You can see them under the seat in light blue on the 12:29 time of this video.
    3. Sorefame coaches were built in Portugal under license from Budd Company.

Travelled this route a number of times through the years since the 90s. Worth mentioning that Christ's little finger on that statue Cristo Rei, is in fact 6 feet long. I have been up the statue a few moons ago and dread to think of the cost of doing it now. At last count, around 5 euros.

i can't say anything about other countries but in germany there should be no problem all trains i used in the last years have one (regional and intercity)
uhm on second thought maybe make sure you don't have to travel along the whole train to find one, i don't know if you can see that on the outside.

I am gonna say strange things today...,but I like the trash bin on the train !! Lol. As it was wide ,too ! I disliked Japanese trash bins on trains when I grew up in Japan til 22 ...they were long ,but thin ,so I poked trash further in w/ o putting my hand in .Lol. I was wondering why you had to explain of the stairs & platforms ...I 🤔 ,I guess it's because people / kids nowadays don't use trains much & not familiar with how train stations are !?
Iiked this train ,btw. Very clean & looking comfy !! I loved the leg room you got in the 1st class !! ( the 1st train's ,not the 2nd one ...that was so comedic that you tried very hard to pull down the tray & not much of a legroom !! )
Japan has always been very accessible to all the disabled people which I am very proud of !! Trains ,many shops ,almost all public bathrooms/ toilets ,many train stations . Not to mention hospitals ! 👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞

  • @Mainyehc
    @Mainyehc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I never noticed the difference in those seats, but maybe that’s because I’ve been traveling on second class. 🤷‍♂️ As for the interiors, they look rather similar in design, but admittedly the Sorefame coaches are indeed showing their age.
I’d also suggest that you check the new remodeled Arco coaches - from a lot of more than 50 CP bought used from their Spanish counterpart, Renfe Operadora - once they are put into service in a few months (by the end of this year, or the first quarter of the next at the latest, I reckon) on Interregional services on the Minho line (they are bound to serve on ICs instead, once the Stadler FLIRT MMUs for that line are delivered). They look positively gaudy by comparison, but are hopefully comfortable and guaranteed to feel new.

The one thing I would say Dylan is that your comment regarding prices is one from a foreigner's perspective. Keep in mind that a minimum wage salary in Portugal is shy of 700 euros a month, 45 euros is not considered exactly affordable for the locals. Great reviews though and I must wholeheartedly agree with you, the Sorefame seats are not comfortable at all, experienced such myself a couple of years back. It is a huge shame that Portugal lags so behind other European countries when it comes to rail.

The sceneries viewed from both trains were beautiful 😍 You took 20 minutes !? so long to find the socket was very funny !! 😆 I wonder if it's easy for Portuguese. Each country has ways of doing things which understood by their own citizens, but difficult for foreigners. Just got curious ! Lol. Or simply designed poorly ! Lol. That happens also !
I dislike when the light switches get complicated !! Lol. Like in hotels ...too many switches in bathrooms ,especially if it's a high tech one...lol. And it takes a while to get used to it as well ! Ugh...! Lol.

all that happens because those coaches are very old ..... some of them were built more than 50 years ago.... exactly the Sorefame Coaches..... the Corail Coaches are a bit younger than that.....

Everything track side is so clean and well kept. Stations and trains spotless too. Why is Britain so dirty and couldn’t care less?

Some trains in britain are falling to pieces as well. You don't really want to use EMR's Intercity services, as their trains are falling to pieces, and you don't want to use EMR Connect either as those trains are 20 years old and unrefurbished. 3+2 seating as well with no tables, yuck!
