It is best to watch it after setting the subtitles.
I visited Ontayaki Pottery Village, a pottery village located in a deep valley of Mt. Hikko, located in Hita City, on the border between Fukuoka and Oita Prefectures in the central part of the Kyushu region in the southwestern part of the Japanese archipelago, around the end of January 2024.
The pottery village here uses pottery grinding using a watermill taught by a Joseon potter named Hachiyama who was taken away during the Japanese invasions of Korea, molding using a counterclockwise potter's wheel, metal spatulas, combs, fingers, etc., and natural power that does not use any machines. In addition to pottery production techniques that depend on family labor and a culture of inheritance that is passed down to only one son in a household, pottery is collected from mountains purchased jointly by the village and pottery is fired in a communal kiln.
It is famous as a place where production has been carried out using the method chosen by Joseon potters for over 300 years.
This village, located in a deep valley, became known as a world-class tourist destination and pottery village after world-renowned potter Bernard Ritchie stayed there for a month, and a large number of tourists visit this place every year.
In particular, the sound of billiards, which harmonizes with the water wheel and the sound of water, was selected as one of the "100 Japanese sounds to keep in mind" and is loved by Japanese people.
A pottery festival is also held twice a year, on May 3-4 and on the second weekend of October, and the Municipal Ontayaki Ceramics Museum in the north of this town is open every day except for the year-end and New Year holidays (December 29-January 3). It is open for free from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please refer to this when making your schedule.
In addition, it is good to take into account that this is a mountainous area and there is no convenience store except one restaurant operated by the village.
The easiest way to get to this village is by car. You can visit it through the access road connected to the north and south of the village. Detailed routes can be found on the Oita Prefecture tourism website.
The sound of billiards from a watermill echoing softly in a clear and quiet mountain village and the pungent scent of baking from a pottery kiln will be an elixir that clears the soul tired of the city.
If you get the chance, visit and feel the unique atmosphere of the Japanese pottery village, which is like a mountain village in Korea.
