Life-Size Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid Robot Build!

- One of our favorite things we saw at this year's Star Wars Celebration was Mike McMaster's remote-controlled Imperial Probe Droid. This life-size recreation of the menacing Viper droid as seen in The Empire Strikes Back was 3D printed over the course of a year, and wired with servos, motors, lights, and sound effects all remotely controlled by McMaster and his son. We catch up with Mike to learn about the build of this incredible robot and how it's being stress tested at the convention!

Thank you , I really enjoyed seeing that , I know I've got an old power antenna that I shortened , somewhere in my shop ,now I'm definitely adding one . Lol.
I saw it driving around on Sunday! Absolutely blown away by the artistry and engineering of all the droids at the con, but this one especially!
With the nonchalant scout/storm troopers in the background, the odd alien passing through and the noise of the crowd, it gave me a "Mos Eisley tavern" kind of feel during this interview lol...amazing work, those things are a pain in the rebel butt lol
Always thought the full-size prop probe droid was much larger. Interesting.

@@Bad_Wolf_Media Yes, I agree it's Luke. Wearing a glove on only his right hand kind of confirms it, though I'm pretty sure they never actually showed Lukes right hand after he became a ghost.

Everybody grasped for air when we saw these droids in The Empire strikes back movie, back then 42 years ago.
So much work and love went into the creation of this thing. It’s weird to think that the Empire mass-produced this stuff with disposability foremost in mind. They didn’t give a crap about them. As weird as it may sound, thank you for caring about the scouts.

Very impressive build. I love it.
I started playing a MMORPG game called “Star Wars Galaxies” back in 2004. They shut the servers down in 2011, but there are still several private Emulator servers up an running that I still play on. If you were a Bounty Hunter in the game you would have to use these Probe droids, and also Arakyd droids in the game to track your Jedi target.
So it’s so cool to see something Iv used in a video game for so long now be brought to life, I definitely want one!

Amaaazing work! Would love to have seen some more weathering or snow on the droid itself, and perhaps a moment to hear the sound effect more clearly, but I understand it was very noisy there.

Based on a Chris Foss original design, that later Moebius put in the background of a comic, as a tip of the hat to Foss. They were fans of each others work and met on the pre production of the never completed 1970's Dune.

It's so scary creatures that I like the best like the largest muppets and this probe and I also love Jim Hanson's dark crystal those beetle bugs. With big pinchers those things were really creepy.
That's awesome. I "almost" want one. Put an AI in it so it can do the dishes, the vacuuming, mow the lawn, and I'll buy it yesterday like I'm George Jetson.

Looks really cool, but really think this is printing gone a bit crazy. Surely it would be easier and less time consuming to just build up the body with normal materials, rather then printing out the whole thing.
Agreed, a printed shell on an internal space frame could have saved a LOT of plastic. I'm guessing this was just a scaled up small STL file.

How do I get ahold of him ? I'm wanting to know how he solved the logistics problems of getting it in the convention center doors . I'm going to have the same problems , similar size and weight .
Convention centers have big roll up doors in the "back" And miles of crazy hallways.

@@moultriemanicmechani Call ahead. You may be able to get it in on a load in day. Or they can direct you to the bigger swing loading doors. Assuming you're not an Exhibiter. Because then they just tell you where to go when.

Thanks! I live with my 96 yr old mother-in-law. She doesn't leave the house so if she ever gets Covid, it will be because I brought it in. She's super sweet so masks for me are essential.

It’s not mandated or enforced hardly anywhere. But, people are free to make their own choices. Some people don’t feel comfortable in areas with many people close together. It also can be about keeping others safe. If you’re feeling a little bad and don’t want to spread to other people can wear a mask in order to still go out.
