- Ex-Army Commando Roy Cadman describes how to spot a sniper by listening to the sound of the bullet fire, and how such a skill comes only from experience.
'The Old and the Bold' is just one of the community projects being run by the National Army Museum as part of its 'Building for the Future' redevelopment project.

"Snipers are a bloody nuisance" - fantastic understatement.
+intruder313 It was different back then, german snipers on the western front were very often just placed out to hold up the allies: They didn't leave their hiding spot and then they would be killed most of the time. They were more like designated marksmen.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 He's fabulous, int he? What a lad! 👏👏👏👏
"Snipers, a bloody nuisance"....fantastic British understatement.
it's to do with not letting the enemy spread fear. if we just snarl and grit our teeth. less likely they're to succeed.
Keeps your head clear.
Hooray for being British!!! We dont give in even if we have a small Island

Man, those medals are brigther than my future
dataguttene ☆ And they did not hand those medals out for winning a pie baking contest, or as a "participant" prize.
He reminds me of an old guy I knew just a character he ended up with cancer in hospital. He never lost his sense of humour. Nearer the end when I visited him in hospital I asked him did he want me to bring him anything next visit. He replied don't bring me any long play records . What a guy my friend was ..
This old soldier reminds me off a great guy I knew year's ago. I would visit him at a old people's home with my girlfriend who he had known since she was a child. Harry was he's name he was part of the rear guard left behind after Dunkirk to harass the opossing forces.
he told me how after he and few pals where left to make there own way out. I used to wheel him to the pub every fortnight to grab a couple of pints and chat. he was a gem and a real honest as they come fellow god I miss those days sadly he died in 2003. RIP Harry.
From what I can remember, he told me that they tried to make it more difficult for the Axis force to advance. As Harry said taking down Telegraph poles across roads Lol Leaving boobytraps and genral harassment. Apparently he and others made off into background and was aided by locals. last beer I had with him was 2001 he later died in 2002.
Steve Mcqueen Damn shame. I never knew they actually escaped...
+British Ball I guess a lot didn't, but as in every situation some would and did, also they probably got out by any means possible. I recall I could be wrong, but Harry said something about it took months to get back. he remarked about the risks that civilians took. hiding them feeding them. alsorts he said they were hero's because they simply couldn't just walk away. like I said he was a great guy. he liked a pint and people.
@ My grandfather was captured fighting as the Dunkirk rearguard and spent 5 years in POW camps.
@@BikiniStrings Damn, it was a horrid time.
this guy definitely bayonet charged the sniper
Most likely
They had some good headsets in WW2
These oldies are such gems, a certain grace and dignity of their hard classic life. My generation, generation-y, we're going to be the worst old people ever
+Luke Crant our generation 1990+ is the stupidest most pathetic generation ever.
+Jack Finnigan Also the most intelligent from statistics.
Primarch Alpharius i highly doubt that

Is a simple case of information on demand.
The internet changed everything.
And of course, we also have 'Thicky-Pedia!' :-)
Fantastic hearing him talk about the anti sniper technique of crack bang.
Fascinating stuff.
I am so honored to be able to see this. We should respect and hail these guys, because ya can't get a better source of information, i mean really..
This is an interesting and excellent Project. Three Cheers for The Old and The Bold!!
These are excellent videos.
I love listening to these 'been there and done that' men. I actual respect and take notice of what they say, because you never know when it might come in handy.
Thankyou for your SERVICE GOD BLESS YOU 🇬🇧
Imagine having to have the calmness of mind to stop and think about this to get the sniper as they are trying to kill you .
Here's to the greatest generation
Clever stuff with the sniper location.
Old boy knows it .lucky to get through it.god bless him
good old boy,much respect
British people, where would you say his accent is from??? I liked it
It's a London East End Cockney Accent also known as a working class cockney accent. Much like that of Michael Caine.
Straight up Londoner ...
it is, what we call, an old londoner accest. you wont get voices like that from the young londoners
South London
I think that’s an old South London accent. It’s not East End. Slightly too posh for East End. My best guess is somewhere like Camberwell ....but from back in the day. Lovely gentlemen.
Respect☺
Great lesson.
Thank you sir.
Well done ......informative.
thank you sir for your knowledge (to begin with ) BUT ! ... thechnologie now cant spot the angle too !!!!! ... i now wonder if human ear can addapt ??? (the tecchnologie uses many many microphones to spot the angle) we human have only two ear's ... so is it realy possible to addapt with only two ear's ... i dont know yet
Holy shit. look at all those medals
+Roberto Castro They look like campaign - not gallantry - medals. I'm NOT belittling the gentleman, he surely saw some action, but they aren't medals for outstanding acts of bravery - such as The Victoria Cross or the Military medal. My late father (WWII Royal Navy) had a similar set.......
Good to know. Thought he had a few Victoria Crosses on his chest. Pretty sure he gutted a few Nazis
+Roberto Castro Victoria Crosses are a very dull bronze colour.
Be fair, would you recognise the American CMH or the French Croix-de-Guerre? :-)
factnotfictionpeople Yes.
P.S, It isn't actually a Congressional medal because Congress don't approve or give out the medal.
P.P.S, the legion d'honneur would be a more apt comparison given that it, like the VC and MoH are, is the given countries highest bravery accolades.
It's referred to as 'crack-thump'. The 'crack' being the sound of the air slapping back behind the supersonic bullet as it passes, the 'thump' is the discharge of the shot. Guesstimate for range is about 600 metres for a one second gap between 'crack' and 'thump' for typical rifle bullets.
Of course if the bullet hits you, this doesn't help much; and rifle bullets striking flesh make quite a distinctive slap too!
A WW2 era German 7.92x57 Mauser bullet leaves the rifle or machine gun muzzle at about 760 metres per second - that's 2,730 km/h, sound travels at about 340 metres per second - 1224 km/h. So the Mauser bullet leaves the barrel at well over twice the speed of sound.
Scary speed of death
@Dan Didnot Rifle bullets tend to be supersonic. Most pistol bullets are too, the most common exception from WW2 is the .45 ACP, used in the US 1911 pistol, Thompson and M3 Grease Gun SMGs.
Lance Corporal Jones is that you?
Respect...
Only after the sniper fires can you find him. The great ones shoot and scoot after hitting the target on the first shot.
I would think if there's a bunch of targets, he's going to stay and take out as many as he can?
It would make sense to keep changing positions if you can do it without attracting to much attention.
I got all my training watching documentaries and old movies.
+C Smith usually the doctrine said that after 1-2 shots the sniper had to relocate to another hide or evacuate if the mission was completed.
Fred5612
That does make sense, in the movies they stay and keep picking people off, but then they usually do kill the sniper because he stayed where they could find him.
Many German snipers stayed put until they had no ammo left. They knew that they'd get executed on the spot if captured so it was often " Fire until you die ". There was no Geneva Convention around when a sniper got caught. If a captured German soldier had a bruise over his eye from the rifle scope, he was taken into the woods and shot. WW2 isn't Call of Duty.
Wise words
Hes never told that to anyone ! - Harry brown
This strategy got me to 10th prestige in mw2 in less than 10 days, thanks Commando Roy Cadman, add me ingame sometime we'll play some team deathmatch.
"....such a skill comes only from experience" or, from just about everyone being taught at a very early age how to tell how far away a thunderstorm storm is by timing the gap between the lightning and the thunder.
I hope you're not serious. This has nothing to do with the speed of light vs speed of sound.
this triggered my Tarkov PTSD
BUT YOU DIDNT KNOW WHAT WAS. ( COMING 😅 OR WHO WAS 😅
crackboompfft...ahh yes, 200 yards.
crack, thump
so all you gotta do is crack and you can see the snipers.
dont listen to this guy, he's been goldv for 4 decades and demoted back to silver the last 3 decades gg
at least he's not bronze like you gg
LMAO!
WTF are you on about?........
This is a real man telling it like it is vs todays snowflakes looking for reasons to be offended or wannabe gansters talking shit...
Bro you're such a snowflake you invented people to get angry about. Touch grass.
I hope the U.K never have another war.
People like this don't exist anymore... only justin bieber lookalikes who care more about having nice hair and no knees in their jeans.
so who was doing the fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq ? PC gamers ?
@@louisavondart9178 i dont understand why we are in irag and afghanistan to be honest
