@@jacktattis Paul Newman was a fine stage actor from the same stable as Brando. First big film breakthru`in my view. "Somebody up there likes me". Originally written to be played by James Dean.
This is not true. Steve and Paul did not hate each other. Yes, they were somewhat competitve. Steve out smarted Hollywood. Steve knew what worked for him on screen. The scene in Bullitt where Steve is walking through the airport, while looking for the Mafia bad guy, is brilliant acting. Steve made it look easy, this is why the critics and the Academy overlooked his performance in several of his films. Steve was a huge box office star. James Garner, a wonderful actor, was never a huge box office star. Garner was probably jealous. Ioved them both as great actors. The Narrator is trying to diminish Steves image. It didnt work.
McQueens best performance was in The Reivers.
And Newman was his superior in acting

I liked him best in Nevada Smith. But did he ever make a bad movie?
Junior Bonner was made in 1972, not 1965. Sam Peckinpah also directed Steve in 1972, in The Getaway, which was a very unique kind of film.
Before Bullit, an awful lot of Americans considered the Mustang a girl's car only.
