Michigan Van Life - Below Freezing 🥶 - 10/2020

  • I leave my camp in Wisconsin and head into Michigan. I find a nice camp in the Ottowa National Forest and get a bit of cold weather and snow. I cook up a meal on the propane camp stove and talk a bit about staying warm and comfortable in a van during freezing temps.
*My name is Brian. I started living full time in a self built camper van in 2014 in my hometown of San Diego, CA. I hit the road full-time in 2015 to pursue seasonal work and travel around the U.S. I find free camping on public land and enjoy photography, hiking, biking, and kayaking in nature. Join me on my adventures.
    Thanks for watching!

Ahhhh, just when life in general was starting to get me down, Adventure Van Man posts another glimpse into the good life so I can live vicariously happy for a bit. Never underestimate the power of what you bring to your viewers my friend. I’m sure few appreciate the work that goes into your fine productions. I know it’s not as simple as turning on a camera and talking for 15 minutes. Great job, great life, great spirit you bring to us all. Many thanks, abundant peace, and safe travels to you!!!

@@jmlewis435 Yes definitely good salve for the soul. I’m sorry for your trials, lost my Mom 1 year ago at 89 and it’s been tough. Definitely changed my life’s trajectory, but life’s still good and we each have to continue our own journey. Best wishes to you and your Mom, I know you’ll do your best to bring her comfort. I know I learned there comes a time when we have to let go to lessen their pain and that’s a head pill to swallow but we have to give back what they’ve given us, selfless love. God bless you and yours.

The land around western Lk Superior is iron ore country. MN, Wis, UP Mich have a heavy iron ore mining past. Much of the above ground water is tained red (iron dust) even some mud will leave stains. The flowing water in this region is usually clean but tainted, not muddy, like red beer. Pine sap and needles in streams do this too. The deciduous leaves around there dont really do that.

This brought back fond memories of a fall I was living in my 79 dodge caravan. I camped door county, washington island, up over the UP along the lake and river over to the MAC. Spent a long weekend in a B&B on the island pretending I was in the pioneer days hearing the clippy clopps of the horse taxis going by. Miss the cherry cider and wonderful warm mushroom artichoke soup the one chef would make on the island with fresh bread and venison medallions. Fond Fond memories.

Early winter in the Midwest is always beautiful. The sleet is something we can do without but it's part of nature. The red tint in the rivers is from the iron minerals that we have plenty of. Just keep an eye on the weather, this time of year there can be a sudden squall and you can see some heavy snowfalls. It's getting cooler in northern Ohio but so far as like today it's just been raining and not going below 40° F yet.
Just to give you an update heading this way. Happy travels Brian.

Hello Brian, BBBRRR, to that white stuff to come. If your going to head south on I 75, towards Ohio, I'd like to have you avoid construction snarl going thru Toledo, my back yard!! If you follow I 75 south as you enter Ohio stay in the left lane and for I 280 south, go over the Veterans Memorial bridge, over Maumee River. Follow I 280 to SR. 20 go east and you'll then pick up I 75 out of Perrysburg. You now have avoided traffic bumper to bumper snarl on I 75 going thru downtown traffic jams and stopped traffic delays!! You can also pick up the Ohio Turnpike off of I 280 as well to go east or west! An other great video, looking thru your windshield. Safe and healthy travels.

They call that "snain" Brian. The red color in pristine areas is tannin's from tree roots, in mining areas it's pollution from the tailings. Referenced from a recent UP video from another very entertaining channel called; Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't
