- I always loved the Grandstand opening when growing up. That must have been why I recorded 4 of them!
Sit back and relive a little bit of history. These are openings between 1993 and 1998 but not in succession. - กีฬา
Still sends a shiver down my spine after 15 years. Brilliance.
I'm watching it in 2022 and it is still sensational.
So many memories especially watching rallycross and the BTCC on a Sunday.
Brings a lump to my throat this. Every Saturday at my dads as a kid watching this, the whole world stopped for grandstand. To go back and sit with him watching this would be great
this is one of my favourite songs of all time. when ever it used to come on when i was a kid i'd run into the front room and spin round in circles. thanks for adding this!!
I just love how the timing between the footage of the crashes is in sync with the bass drum/timpani being struck

When sport was easy to access on TV. It's so fragmented now.
I wished they never cancelled Grandstand. It was a typical Saturday afternoon programme. I watched sports that I liked

BBC allways have the best sports intro's
same here, although I'm in Canada - the BBC always had the greatest music for sports, soul limbo for the cricket, grand prix, ski sunday, pot black and the rest of the snooker coverage, the champions theme for the grand national - and using life of riley for goal of the month and nessun dorma for Italia 90 - nobody did that better than the BBC

Ah, Saturdays in the 90's as a child. Live and kicking in the morning, grandstand in the afternoon. Then the generation game, Noel edmons house party, gladiators.
I always remember Grandstand being on BBC1 on a Saturday and BBC2 on a Sunday my dad used to always watch the Grand Prix which was on Sunday Grandstand loved the theme tune more than the sport

Happy days> I more than likely ran the VT from which these were played, that would be VT5a, via Multiplexer 1X, into Studio 5 at Television Centre, back when the BBC had a decent VT area, with the best people in the world. Sadly all gone now.
Sport seemed more honest and less commercial then - Also Grandstand was iconic - proper sport TV
I can remember Grandstand being on TV over the years, though sadly I didn't take much interest in sport until I hit my teens (2002 onwards) so I didn't get to watch very much of it, I remember being quite sad when it got axed despite this. Though I DID love the opening theme very much! I want to say the earliest one I can remember watching is the 1996/7 ones, if only because I can remember seeing those specific BBC Sport idents. But yes, good times, just a shame I didn't get into sports sooner!

Also, weas the BBC contractually obliged to include Nick Faldo until Tiger Woods came along?
Sorry to reply to your comments 12 years later but I think Woods didn’t start winning majors until 1997 and some of these intros are before then. The real question is why Henman and Rusedski who won no big titles. At least Faldo won six majors!

Ah, the British version of ABC's Wide World of Sports, NBC Sportsworld, and CBS Sports Spectacular. Sadly, all but one is no longer around. ;-(

A sad day when they axed Grandstand. It was apart of my childhood. Saturday afternoons just will never be the same again.
Honestly, I wasn't the sports loving type back when this was on, but I'd always watch the intro music at least.

The programme was Gazzetta Football Italia on Channel 4. The shout you refer to, although sounding like Goal Lazio, was actually Golaccio which in Italian means Goaltastic or something like that. Hope that answers your question.

Don't ask me why, but the BBC Sport theme for Grandstand always reminds me of the Rangers 9 in a row era in the 1990s.

It's the second version which I think is the best but who is scoring the goal past Peter schmeichel is it Spurs vs Man Utd? Also who is the athlete doing the long/high jumps?

BBC Grandstand - funny to see Steve 'ITV' Rder on all when we worked for the BBC.
I remember the days when clocks were shown before most editions of Grandstand but in around 1995 the regular BBC Television station symbols were shown into Grandstand. In my novels, GDPtv moved away from using the clock into Grandstand in favour of sports themed version of their regular symbol from February 1991 for the right reasons as the use of clocks into sports programming was dying out.
this was when the bbc was the bbc before they started giving all their money to strictly and danny dyer at eastenders. give me bbc sport instead of that drivel anyday

yeah the epic BBC Sports ident from 1989-1992 represented BBC at the height of it's extreme power.... bring back the globe its time the BBC brought back that power again

One of the intro's was deffo '92. Agassi winning Wimbledon. Mansell winning F1. Gunnell winning Olympic gold! 💪
god, i really miss this theme tune every Saturday lunchtime, it just isnt the same without it, but BBC still show sport and have final score, why cant they just bring it back?

Why do people keep saying "Bring back Grandstand?" It's not as if the Beeb no longer has wall-to-wall sport on Saturdays. The only thing that's really gone is the theme tune and the central studio.

It would be nice to have Grandstand back but look at what the Beeb did to it during its last few years. Football Focus AND final Score had their own Idents and it was only a matter of time. As for regular wall-to wall sport on saturdays now, seen the schedules lately?!? Some summer Sats, no sport on BBC! Unbelievable! And don't forget the Sunday version!!

As much as I would love to see it return and I would, BBC only show a few sports these days so wouldn't be enough coverage for a whole day since they nearly have lost contracts to everything
i think the earlier versions were much better edited with the beat of the song matching an even ie the rugby try or the car crash. good to see the time was put in

This one was good . Never cared too much for the first one . However what about the one before this ? Remeber it being pretty goos but can't remeber for the life of me how it went . Would know it if I heard it though . Changed to this one in the mid 70s . But can't seem to find the one prior to this in You Tube
