I'm not sure if this has already been considered in an established fantasy setting, but the story of how the thieves guild was created as an accidental side effect of the purge made me consider something: what if there was a villain that intentionally masterminded the passing of some law like this in order to create the conditions for establishing a thieves guild under their own control? It seems like a very intriguing narrative
I noticed this is in a new playlist entitled Crime. Which is exciting as it would be helpful for a novel I'm writing, which includes a group of thieves that steal from corrupt elite along the coast of their country to get what they need to sail off to a new world. These types of videos are more specific than I thought I'd ever be able to find and are immensely helpful.
Another interesting criminal organisation you could talk about is the "assassin's guild". Real-world assassin institutions often come together for reasons distinct from thieves' institutions. Generally, they tended to be focused initially on political activism, assassinating political rivals. Similar to how gangsters originally existed to protect the poor, but quickly just start to extort them, assassins also usually lose sight of their original goal and just become assassins-for-hire. However, this actually makes them less sustainable than thieves' organisations, as they end up just assassinating all their own clients and generally causing political instability.
I would personally love to see a video about societal change orgs (political groups? insurgents?)! I havent actually read a lot of fantasy at all, but I remember a reddit post where someone had designed a ton of small finger tattoos that communicated achievements, mistakes, allegiances, and capabilities of a member. Very small part of the whole picture but it was such nice flavour. Also, Im happy to see the quality improving, keep at it!
I was thinking of both insurgents and political groups :) I'll start working on it :). And thanks! I've been doing this for just on 5 months now, I look at the earlier videos and all I want to do is reshoot them :D
I've toyed with a "fish out of water" story, where a D&D style rogue from a classic fantasy RPG city with thieves guilds in every basement visits a city where law and law enforcement has been so effective they are completely on their own, with no contacts and no one to contact or even provide helpful tips.
Very interesting video, I will use some of the ideas here for my dwarven mafia. The speech is clear, the ideas are well explained , it is very high quality ! I'm subscribing, your channel seems full of interesting videos :)
Thanks so much! Fair warning: some of my early videos have CRAP sound 🙊 I knew nothing about sound when I started this channel 😅 someday I might go re-record those
If there wasn’t any crime then there would be no need for law enforcement (or for most laws in general). Crime provides illegal goods and services that some people want at a price that are willing to pay. Thus, some would argue, crime is beneficial. Too much crime and too much law enforcement is bad. Thus the goal is to have the “optimal” amount to crime and law enforcement. This is how things work in the real world and it is also how it works in my stories. The story revolves around the tension between crime and law enforcement and what happens when the optimal balance that exists between them is disrupted? A build up of crime leads to a build up of law enforcement which leads to too little crime which leads to an increase in demand for crime which leads to to a build up in crime - a phenomena known as crime waves.
Hey, I've been watching your worldbuilding videos recently and have been enjoying them a lot :). I was wondering if you could maybe do a video on traditions with courtship, manners/etiquette, or how respect is shown in a fantasy society? The politics of respect and courtship I find interesting, but I just don't know where to start to develop my own for my world

I'm glad you're finding them useful! I'll be covering assassins and politically motivated crime soon as well :)

I’ll add them to the list 😎 I’ve come across a few good ones over the years in fantasy.

That sounds like a super fun storyline. I'd play that :D

I certainly can! Glad you’re enjoying the videos! I’ll add it courtship and politics to the list for the upcoming month!
