Not far of 2 years now since this video. I think it's safe to say Tom is never coming back. It was good while it lasted and what ever your doing now (if your still alive that is) I hope its going well for you.
I seen a BBC News video posted a month ago describing Tom as the General Manager at the cinema he been working at for years so maybe he has been promoted and spends all his time in the job and with Family.
Always great to see a new IMNC video! Thanks for the post Tom. It is worth noting that the 2014 Mac mini can use NVMe SSDs with an inexpensive adapter using the Apple blade drive bus. It makes the SSD upgrade much easier, and you do not need to remove anything besides the bottom cover. You can then reuse the factory hard drive for extra storage. The performance is only slightly better than SATA III due to the Apple blade SSD bus, but it just makes the upgrade much simpler. Also, be sure that the firmware is from macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 or newer before installing the NVMe SSD. @ItsMyNaturalColor
Ha !! Tom we love your ramblings !! I always learn several things and get entertained to boot! I know you and Jess have had your hands full (of joy!!) with those 3 precious little fellas. Tell her Larry from across the pond sends my warmest greetings and support for the great job she is doing. Give those 3 cherubs a hug also!! Thank you for taking time to share this update my friend. I could have done with this video a few weeks back, as I did something similar recently. I bought a 2.8GHz, 8GB, 1TB 2014 Mac Mini to use as a basic home server and the stock HDD was very slow with read and write around only 30MB/s. I was amazed at how slow the whole system was. I had a 1TB NVME drive and m.2 adaptor lying around (previously fitted to my old MacBook Pro) and I bought a 4TB HDD. I fitted these as a Fusion Drive and it transformed the performance of the system. The 4TB HDD was 15mm thick, so I needed to use a 2012 hard drive bracket to get it to fit in the 2014 model and I had to buy the ribbon cable to attached the m.2 to the PCIE socket. Setting up the fusion drive with Big Sur was very easy too. It all works great.
Great to see you posting content again Tom! Rambles are why most of us subscribe. How you manage to work with poor sight on these systems is amazing. Apple intentionally make it hard to service them so that those of us with poor eyesight etc will probably struggle. I depend on my memory and hearing to compensate for my poor eyesight
Hi Tom, long time no see, hope you are keeping well buddy, and keeping safe, always a pleasure to see a new video, I've watched your channel for years, even before I joined TH-cam. all the best to you and the family and stay safe and well and hope to see more great content soon :)
That actually performs a lot better than I was expecting. I have a similar mini and was always under the impression that the 4GB of RAM was a good chunk of the problem in addition to the mechanical drive, but seems to be mainly the drive
Hi Tom! Looks like I am 5 months late - but I thoroughly enjoyed this video - glad the SSD helped as much as it did! I have done the exact same with breaking the sata connector haha! Seen one of your 8 year old videos on my recommended page, clicked on your profile and couldn't click on this video quick enough! Loving the content Tom, hope to see more soon, hope all is well! Cheers Jamie
Made a similar cock up with a 2012 macbook pro and managed to rip the antenna connector off the wireless card. Thankfully it was a component that could be replaced. Always gives you that sinking feeling though when it happens.
You could just add a NVME SSD with adapter (less than 10 euros) on top of the existing HD. Without removing (or destroying...) anything. The connection is on the board already.
