Feral was so fun omg. It’s honestly not fair for the players, I spent 40$ on it not knowing it could potentially shut down soon and I did not get refunded.
Hey- sorry just watching this video and saw this comment. When you made an account of Feral, you pressed "yes" to agreeing to the terms of service. If I'm not mistaken (and I could be), one of those terms happened to be that if the game shuts down, purchases are not refunded. I know it's kind of cruddy regardless, but just thought you should know.
Aside from the whole NFT debacle, (They handled that horribly. Im sure they learned their lesson though.) I don’t see most of Wildworks’/Nazara’s actions as money hungry, at least not overly so. Seems pretty standard compared to most free to play games I’ve come across. I think a lot of players, especially the younger ones, either forget or don’t realize that these companies aren’t doing this to be charitable. This is a business. Employees need to be paid. It’s unreasonable to expect a ton of free content for no price tag. However, I think the game would benefit from a few more free features. There’s a fine balance between free and paid content that needs to be maintained for these kind of games to really be successful, and I feel AJ leans just slightly too much towards the latter. It would definitely help retain more new players. I wish to see this game that I enjoyed so much as a kid continue to succeed!
altho this comment is old, i agree with it, how kids will call any game "grEedY/p2w" for not getting everything for free, but at the same time more free features to balance it out would be nice sometimes lol
I think animal jam will get back into shape, go back to normal again and I’m not saying they aren’t normal but still, we need those iconic animals back, like the duck, no pattern animals, phantom, unicorn, why can’t they add tapirs now that they are kinda in shape, they can still do it, and would still fit the new generation
I haven't really looked into how far AJ goes with merchandising but imagine if you could get a plush of your character (like Kijjikon has of Archie) directly made by WildWorks? And maybe a smaller plush for your in-game pets? You could also get plush clothes for your character plushies or of course just make your own custom clothes. Pokémon makes a massive amount of money from merchandise, in fact, afaik, it's their primary method of income. I feel like this would be a win for everyone, especially if the plushies were of high quality: WW gets a way of making money for something I imagine alot of ppl, especially the older players with established characters (again, like Archie) would really like. And this way, they also make money without blocking something in-game from F2P players. And the plushies (or other merchandise) could function as advertising for the AJ brand if sold in shops and maybe even some non-AJ players would want to buy them. And decades down the line if AJ closes or people just move on, they'll also still have something physical to remind them of the game, like how I have a bunch of Club Penguin merchandise like trading cards and plushies.
This video really opened my eyes to why animal jam made the decisions they have and why certain things have changed. I don’t play Animal Jam anymore, but I still keep up to date on the game because it means a lot to me. As someone who played animal jam, for at least an hour a day, every day, for 3 years without stopping (5 hours or more on weekend days) when I saw the changes in animal design, music, and the pay to win, I was a bit upset. Why was my favourite game so different now? Why did it feel like it was getting… almost corporate… it was nothing specific but it was just a vibe that came off of everything. Now I know why. And honestly I’m glad. It might not feel the same, but that’s okay. Change happens, and there were good reasons for those changes. If animal jam hadn’t chosen to do some of the things they have done, then the game might have gone forever. I’m so glad animal jam has managed to stay alive, and I hope despite the struggles, that the company behind it will work hard to keep it that way, for much longer. Thanks for this, this was really insightful.
The thing with feral was that it was shut down because of Cinder. I was there when it all happened. They got greedy, and lied to the players. The thing with Feral was it was advertised to people who were 18+. I also was one of the people who got early access. We thought we were testing a game, but then they came out and said Feral was a test for Cinder. And we were not made aware it was even an nft project at the start. People felt reasonably betrayed, and animal jam taught us to protect the environment. Nfts damage the environment so of course we wouldn't have supported Feral's development if we knew it was an nft test project from the get-go. Not to mention, the person who came up with the project passed away, and she had a great love and passion for it, but after she passed, they completely ruined the game for the profit, turning it into Cinder to get the extra money. Feral's Community was outraged, and Clark Stacy wasn't good to us either. He wouldn't listen, and threatened to shut down the game if we didn't shut up about it. Originally ut would have existed alongside Cinder, but Feral also had more features than Cinder did, and it was a free-to-access game, which would have damaged Cinder, so he made the call to shut it down, and he also kept the game closed for a whole month until the last day when it was supposed to shut down. And yet another thing he lied to us about. He promised we would have access to feral for the whole day that last day, but then changed it at the last minute to just 3 hours of playtime. I lost sleep that day because i wanted to be awake for it, and not miss it. And in the end, Cinder flopped anyways. So.. in short, yes Feral shut down because of Cinder.
I genuinely don’t think it shut down because of cinder. I was also around when it was closed and was actually a pretty big fan of the game too. I didn’t go over everything here but I do genuinely think it was NOT planned as an nft game from the jump, especially given the fact that during the game’s initial development nfts were not relevant in the slightest. The game was in fact failing before cinder came into the picture, and when nfts became popular that became an easy out for the company. Clark Stacy DID seriously unprofessional things during this time I am not arguing you on that, the fact this man was ceo for so long baffles me when he seems to have absolutely zero social management skills under pressure. (The community treated him like garbage BEFORE he went bezerk, but dude?? You’re a ceo, not a teenager, man up? Huh??) However Stacy wasn’t the only person spearheading cinder, that’s simply NOT how a company works, a ceo does have heavy say but isn’t the only decision maker. Feral WAS shut down at the time it was because of cinder, but had nfts not existed it would have shut down either way without ever having been fully developed.
What I’ve noticed is that the moderation changed as well. Today I finally finished my drawing that took 8 hours. And for some reason they didn’t accept it. It has literally no gore or anything in it and this isn’t the first time. Is it just me or did they accept more mps before this company bought aj? All I can say is I’m frustrated because they didn’t accept it, I don’t know what to do.
AJ should make the superboxes 1000 sapphires, then people who don’t wanna spend money can get them and some people would still probably buy the sapphires
Devil’s advocate here, rn it’s 5 dollars for 250 sapphires. 250 sapphires is incredibly easy to get right now due to sapphire inflation. You can get an egg token, worth almost twice that amount in about 20 minutes. Buying sapphires with real money is not even close to worth it right now. If superboxes ever are only sold for sapphires, Animal Jam would lose money rapidly because no one would buy their products. I get wishful thinking, but this idea just is not realistic.
Loved this video! so glad as part of the old guard of AJ that we have content creators like you to help us understand the state of the game we love :D Also good luck as a fellow college student! ❤

Once again, as an Animal Jam player who briefly took a break a bit before Clark Stacey stepped down as CEO (December 2023-January 2024), I can agree that Animal Jam has made poor decisions and is coming back from it with good features, and also with QOL and Customizability. I do believe Wildworks is trying to keep afloat in the game market with an entirely different approach to other companies making games, that being to make the game actively better in comparison to other games *Cough cough most mobile games marketed towards anyone cough cough*, and I feel that it’s going to be a decent move, even if it’s not necessarily the most money-making move. At some point, we may see ads removed from the game again because it’s making enough money to float with in-app/website purchases and membership purchases. I think I’d personally buy one of those boxes if they did the irl boxes again, especially with a phantom theme, although I don’t think IRL merch is a good idea for now. However, it’s nice to see a game go in an at least decent direction.
Wish my Jam character could be part of your video but due to lack of green screen or just "myself" is the problem. Best wishes to you, and who ever gets chosen to be put in your video. 😃
i feel like animal jam shops are good but the game feels more like a reselling simulator. play wild should introduce the adventures and sea creature areas.
True. Why did they did not include it on Play Wild? I doubt it is expensive. Perhaps they poured their funds on making a world zones like the Pack Run, and pet adventure.
