    Glad to see no one was seriously hurt. Cheers to NZL for lending their facilities to help the Americans get back in the fight. True sportsmanship. I was at the AC34 pier as we watched NZL almost capsize in Race 8. As NZL recovered, we all cheered and fans, NZL and US , exchanged high-fives. It's a great sporting community! Looking forward to seeing Patriot return.

    Pretty proud of the way the other teams and the NZ community reacted to this, there was no hesitation to help, this is the true meaning and spirit of sport and the beauty of what is possible out of difficult times. Hutchinson has given such a great example of how to react to a truly horrible situation, with humility and bravery. As a Kiwi supporter, I hope that the semi-final is brilliant and that American Magic get the boat out there and get to sale it to its full potential

    So cool and casual... "I've lost the rudder." When it hits the fan, the importance of good training always reveals itself!!
    We need a good story of American ingenuity, strength, and winning spirit... this team will bring us that in the future as Patriot comes back together. What needs to be recognized here though is that it took a collective effort to save Patriot and this was truly a world effort as displayed by all the teams that came together to help.
    This is a good example for all of us to follow... when the boat goes over, we all need to come together to right her, assess the situation, and get things underway again.

      Its a new boat design, like a narrow catamaran, not many have experience in heavy weather with. Too much sail for the wind, It was simply too late to make a decision that would have worked, to avoid confusion he had to stick with his decision.

  • @raywalker4656

    From re-watching the capsize, I still agree with the initial diagnosis of the commentators that the primary reason for the capsize was the port running backstay being taught, which prohibited the depowering when the mainsail was released causing the boat to lean and leap out of the water. Also, watching the return to the water, it looked like the foil cushioned the blow of the hull hitting the surface of the water, so I feel there is a little more to the story than the water causing the hull damage which perhaps might have resulted in damage being pushed into the hull, rather than a fragment that looked like it may have been a piece pushed out of the hull. Look, its easy to be 8,085 miles away to be an armchair reviewer, so take this with a pinch of salt, please review the videos and form your own opinions.
    The most important outcome is that everybody is safe, so the safety equipment and procedures worked, could they be improved? Yes, I believe a large or several large inflatable devices could have been inserted into the hull through the upper port that you see being opened in the video and inflated inside the hull to reduce water volume inside the hull and remove the risk of sinking.
    Then sheets of sticky materials (like fablon) that could be inserted over the hole in the hull to reduce the ingress. 3M may make such a material, similar to their tinted windows materials which is reinforced to limit the impact of impact from hammers of explosions. (As developed for London to keep explosions inside or prohibit explosions from the street going into buildings.)
    A few rounding buoy's and air pumps kept on the rescue boats could have reduced the risks of sinking quite quickly as soon as the first boats arrived at the scene.

    • @windycityjohn400
      @windycityjohn400 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I saw somewhere that the battery that powers the hydros for the foils broke free and caused the damage to the hull.
      Basically became a loose cannonball inside the boat.

  • @swerne01
    @swerne01 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What seems obvious to me is that since Dean was steering from the leeward side going in to the mark he could not see the puff coming. If he had seen it coming he might have made a different call. Terry was grinding and so he did not see the puff either or he might have called for a different tactic. The other tactic would have been to tack but not to bear away as part of the same maneuver but rather to bear away a little later. Goodi said over the intercom that it was going to be a hard maneuver but that apparently did not carry the weight of a need to change the plan. But one has to remember that these guys weren't sailing a Laser. Communication is not instant like when a Laser sailor changes his mind. Team decisions take more time and unfortunately in this situation there was very little time. That's no one's fault. That's the nature of sailing a big racing boat. A big puff hit at a critical moment. It's really just bad luck.

    • @Greatagain-eagle
      @Greatagain-eagle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dean was told twice the Jibe was a hundy shorter and the better choice, then the point was made it was a hard manoeuvre. Hutchinson has been solid throughout.

    • @swerne01
      @swerne01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Greatagain-eagle Subsequent to making this remark I viewed a video showing analysis and a different view of American Magic just before the tack. Barker, Goodison and Hutchinson are all on the weather side of the boat. They are all looking at the oncoming puff from effectively the same spot. They all see the same thing. So what it boils down to is Barker gets to make the decision by virtue of him being the helmsman, not that he had any different data than the other two. Bad decision or bad luck? Hard to say. But for sure the boat would have had a better chance if the starboard running backstay had been released which clearly it wasn't. The upper half of the mainsail would have been significantly depowered. So far the American Magic team has been very coy about saying who was responsible for the stay not being loosened. It's not a difficult thing to ascertain. Anyone who knows the boat should be able to tell you where that control is located. Then you can just look and see who's stationed there. But so far no one is talking.

    • @Greatagain-eagle
      @Greatagain-eagle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@swerne01 I agree about the back stay but I think the chap with the most information was behind Dean Barker, he had a longer, clearer view. I say that because he had no other job, like steering, or grinding in those moments. Perhaps he was waiting to release the RBS. He also carried enough seniority to specifically speak as to the choice to be made. He said it twice. Bad call or bad luck - both I think, a gust on a gust. 12 up to 18 then double down to 25! As to who’s to blame for running back stay not being released; equipment or human failure came after the choice was made to round into the puff. It is possible that a part of it being a “difficult” manoeuvre is achieving such trimming in that condition. Barker turns to check on the advice... so is this simply a case of a strategic call falling into a moment of confusion amplified by the gusts and the back stay? At some point the learning must be made and as I watched live I was clear that approaching that mark all they had to do was round it safely to win. I have enjoyed plenty of heavy weather cat racing and when a sound lead is held, play a safe card especially in conditions that can be catastrophic because typically cats will punish you harshly. Having said that, the safe card call day after day in SanFran lost the regatta, so, sad to see these guys go especially given how well Patriot was performing on the day. It’s a tough game.

      Not the cup they came for & probably because it is a bit of a poisoned chalice as they know it really was another one of New Zealand's cups unless you figure sh#ting on a boat from a lap behind deserving. I do admit it was funny tho. And they deserve a hats off for the cunning plan hiding their light until the races that counted. Let us pray (cast spells?) that TA can do the same turnaround & also fix those horrible screams & groans coming from below decks or at least give them a gag or piece of carbon to bite down on?

    Spoiler alert: Nothing this team did worked. After repairs they lost 4 races in a row, each by a mile. Bad decisions, failed strategy, and electronic repairs that went south under race conditions were given the reasons for the crash and burn of this america's cup effort.

    The boat isn't the problem. Not so sure about the crew...

    What if, given that they knew they were getting increased pressure at very high speed, they had KEPT BOTH SETS OF FOILS DOWN???

      More lift on the windward side? Wouldn't help.
      She would be harder to tip the whole way and may have landed more upright. But she still would have tipped.
      Lifting the windward foil gives a stronger righting moment through movement of mass as far wide as possible.
      She'd tip, she probably would land badly. But she would self right fairly quickly probably.
      Shame no one built a 'quick drop' mechanism into those cant arms

    I think it has a lot more to do with the other teams inspecting the engineering on your boat than it was helping you float, lol. Watching an adult spewing this virtual signaling bs is sad.

    At 38 secs in, the helicopter sweeps by. How far off was it ? probably not as close as it looks, never the less, the down wash fron these things is immense and far reaching.
