Blender foundation invited him to give a talk. He immediately agreed, then sat down to write a list about all the things he hates about Blender, and wrote a plot of how to do a presentation that illustrates all of them.
I think it is annoying. I do not dislike him, and i respect him for good videos that i watched many of. But i think this level of "confidence" is kinda unhealthy, offensive and close to moronic.
Or lets talk about the fact that he took the time to digitally edit the video he got from the conference before posting it on his channel to make his trip through the portal look cooler than him just running thru a curtain.
I know NOTHING about Blender and should be in bed sleeping, but just watched a 40-minute informative presentation with awesome story writing, a musical number, and special effects. How did Captain D NOT get a standing ovation for that at the end?!? Your creativity amazes me each time. Stay awesome Captain Disillusion!

@@doggo00 I feel like I need to point out that as of Blender 2.80 it autosaves user settings as soon as you change them. You know, like EVERY OTHER PROGRAM. Also, a good chunk of the issues he brought up are not so pronounced. Ex: They added actual icons for "Fake User" and descriptions of what all the buttons do, etc.
Dude when you realize how much extra artistic power you get out of using a computer, rather than your bare hands, it's amazing. You can use it to make aesthetically pleasing effects on homework (floating text, for example), or just make cool art to build your list of people who know you. Lots of possibilities.
Holy crap, after hundreds of TED talks, conferences, all sorts of courses, university and what not.. This is probably the most amazing presentation I've ever seen. I'd pay to see this live.

I've been binge watching him for a week, and I just found this. By now, not only did I expect him to do that, but I would have been disappointed if he hadn't, because it would have been a continuity error, and he talks about those in his videos. He's amazing. He pre-recorded everything that happens on that screen, and he interacted with himself perfectly. He's brilliant.
This presentation is freaking flawless, the work with the video is impeccable and incredibly well timed, it's inventive, funny, I can't imagine how much work you put into it. Stellar job Captain!
If you haven't seen it already, he does a behind the scenes video, that goes over his one month production cycle. It looks like it's a full time job. So much work goes into it that you're not even aware of. It's truly impressive what for the most part, one guy does.
Honestly, just like all his videos, there's orders of magnitudes more details than most people will understand. Thankfully at blendercon the people probably understand and appreciate the details more than most. He truly goes above and beyond, and respects the viewers time. I have never seen a talk like this in my life! So much work involved, not to mention the skill, the incredible writing, the live acting with a prerecorded image, the comedy, the knowledge... I could go on and on. I’m just so impressed. You really are incredible, Alan, and it’s not going unnoticed.

I love RAM. Recently I added 96GB to my server/workstation, on top of my existing 24, and FINALLY, I am no longer running out. Adding more RAM truly does make the potential limitless, and I highly recommend it if you have a platform old enough (like mine, with processors and a motherboard from ~2011 for DDR3 ECC RAM) for the RAM to be cheap. One of the best purchases I've ever made.
I legit just watched a 40 min presentation on blender, a program I haven't yet decided if I'm interested in learning, without realizing the video was longer than 20min long.
was it significantly improved? because i made the (what i often think might be a ) mistake of learning 3dsmax instead back in 2010. i mean, it's a great software, but... i can't afford to keep wasting money on a subscription sometimes i go the entire year without using. i just want something that is there whenever i need it, not one that kinda forces me to use it to make the cost worth it. this subscription model ruined every software suite. so fuck them. i want to move to open source.

He got a few big bumps from H3H3 podcast, Mark Rober and I think his Escherian Stairwell also went low-key viral. Basically, CD finally gets the attention he deserves. Years, decades, of making high quality, high production content have finally paid off. His views/subscribers graphs look very interesting on socialblade.
@@Reelix Yeah, he went to enter the curtain looking for a seam, but ended up walking offstage instead really quick. It was still done well, but this along with the other edits and optimizations just really gave it the CD shine. He's such a pro and it shows.
NOBODY can extrude a cube. Honestly, I was a one-day user, and it was because none of the shortcuts made any sense at all. Now I realize, all I have to do is make a custom keyboard that can generate all of those shortcuts. There really ought to be a better way.

Don't make it the focus of everything you do or you'll burn out. But if it is something that truly matters to you then it should take up the majority of your free time. And in truth it should be something you enjoy doing anyway. Find your passion then find a way to earn money doing it.

Me for most of the presentation: wow, the Alan bodyswitch was a clever way of avoiding having to do the bodypaint at this conference! Me after he does a quick-change into the makeup and outfit in a little over 3 minutes: nevermind lol (P.S. I have personal experience in how difficult that quick-change was, as I had to smear a guy in metallic bodypaint for a production of Mary Poppins in a similar timeframe)

The thing CaptainD does extremely well is understanding pacing of presentations, and to keep it as loose as possible without losing focus.. He's very good at that and should be credited much more for that particular skillset.
Wow it didn't even feel like 41 minutes... probably because Captain Disillusion added a friction-less condenser for a time-warp in his video... I expect no less from our Captain, but how the hell did he get his hands on a cradmum garnet to use with a high-pressured silicon as base for the conductor... and if you're thinking "Why the hell would you need a conductor? Just connect the condenser to the visual display and you're good to go!" ofc he'll need to protect the fragile electronics from excessive heat... caused from the time difference, you know, the wall of standby, motionless but gathering enormous heat... c'mon that's stuff you learn in the 3rd grade... anyway... so far I know, you won't find any cr-mum around this section of our galaxy, it's really rare... and don't get me started with the whole time-faze issue, like when he doesn't properly calibrate the video progress with the stamps on the condenser, that'll collapse the whole video and turn it into a fuzzy mess... either that or his ship blows up... but obviously he figured all that out already and took precautions, he's Captain Disillusion after all!
i dont know a thing about blender or 3d animation, but i somehow watched this presentation from start to finish. I've always been attracted to things like video editing and making short movies as long as i have the time for it. This presentation has been inspirational for me so thank you and i think i will try doing stuff on blender.
good luck, you'll need it. And patience. But if you ONLY get to know Blender, that'll do the trick: you won't know what you're missing and feel just fine.

Really interesting presentation, truly impressive how you could capture my attention and keep it for the full forty minutes. Stunning presentation, it was really well thought out and rehearsed - I loved the story that tied the whole thing together, it made me keep watching the whole thing. Really interesting idea to make your forty minute presentation follow a story format, broken up with the content of your talk, it's backwards to how lots of people do it, but it worked so absolutely perfectly. I'm honestly in awe of your presentation and production skills, if you ever get tired of ruining peoples dreams by debunking physics-defying water, you should teach a class on presentations and public speaking, you're an absolute master, it would seem!

Captain Disillusion public presentations are an EVENT! They’re all presentations I’d be excited to be in the audience for. The writing, the acting, the timing, the jokes, etc. So impressive. Is there anything you *cant* do?
This presentation captures really well some of the joys of open-source. Building strange things for your own peculiar, particular use. Professionalization is alienating. The tool is a black box, the end product is meant for someone else. Open-source allows for a sort a artisan joy, an identification with both the process and the end product. Which isn't really a product. Because it's not something meant to be consumed or another black-box meant for someone to use further. It's its own thing.
Most people cant appreciate how hard it is to time talking to a recording like this. Its hard when you have infinite takes, let alone doing it LIVE. Its insane.
And he did it flawlessly, honestly I thought I was gonna cringe alot during this but I didn't cringe once and was actually very entertained! So much effort was put into this its absurd. The captain really is an amazing content creator
This is literally a total dream come true seeing this. CaptainDisillusion, who I've been watching for years, and Blender, which I've been using for years. I got the joke to every single reference you made about the program and or creators, and I love every second of it. This was incredible.

I replicated that video and to fix the distribution i deleted a bunch of the balls to make it flat. That's why the balls move wierdly, they're hitting missing balls that got deleted from the bake.

I legit just watched a 40 min presentation on blender, a program I haven't yet decided if I'm interested in learning, without realizing the video was longer than 20min long.
Just did that, but without ever having heard what blender even was... one video lead to another that lead to this video. He’s a fun presenter.

was it significantly improved? because i made the (what i often think might be a ) mistake of learning 3dsmax instead back in 2010. i mean, it's a great software, but... i can't afford to keep wasting money on a subscription sometimes i go the entire year without using. i just want something that is there whenever i need it, not one that kinda forces me to use it to make the cost worth it. this subscription model ruined every software suite. so fuck them. i want to move to open source.

@@Reelix Yeah, he went to enter the curtain looking for a seam, but ended up walking offstage instead really quick. It was still done well, but this along with the other edits and optimizations just really gave it the CD shine. He's such a pro and it shows.

NOBODY can extrude a cube. Honestly, I was a one-day user, and it was because none of the shortcuts made any sense at all. Now I realize, all I have to do is make a custom keyboard that can generate all of those shortcuts. There really ought to be a better way.
to extrude a cube in blender, you first of all boot up the blender software and just shut off your computer and learn easier things

Don't make it the focus of everything you do or you'll burn out. But if it is something that truly matters to you then it should take up the majority of your free time. And in truth it should be something you enjoy doing anyway. Find your passion then find a way to earn money doing it.

(P.S. I have personal experience in how difficult that quick-change was, as I had to smear a guy in metallic bodypaint for a production of Mary Poppins in a similar timeframe)

The thing CaptainD does extremely well is understanding pacing of presentations, and to keep it as loose as possible without losing focus.. He's very good at that and should be credited much more for that particular skillset.

probably because Captain Disillusion added a friction-less condenser for a time-warp in his video... I expect no less from our Captain, but how the hell did he get his hands on a cradmum garnet to use with a high-pressured silicon as base for the conductor... and if you're thinking "Why the hell would you need a conductor? Just connect the condenser to the visual display and you're good to go!" ofc he'll need to protect the fragile electronics from excessive heat... caused from the time difference, you know, the wall of standby, motionless but gathering enormous heat... c'mon that's stuff you learn in the 3rd grade...
anyway... so far I know, you won't find any cr-mum around this section of our galaxy, it's really rare... and don't get me started with the whole time-faze issue, like when he doesn't properly calibrate the video progress with the stamps on the condenser, that'll collapse the whole video and turn it into a fuzzy mess... either that or his ship blows up...
but obviously he figured all that out already and took precautions, he's Captain Disillusion after all!

I've always been attracted to things like video editing and making short movies as long as i have the time for it. This presentation has been inspirational for me so thank you and i think i will try doing stuff on blender.

Really interesting presentation, truly impressive how you could capture my attention and keep it for the full forty minutes. Stunning presentation, it was really well thought out and rehearsed - I loved the story that tied the whole thing together, it made me keep watching the whole thing. Really interesting idea to make your forty minute presentation follow a story format, broken up with the content of your talk, it's backwards to how lots of people do it, but it worked so absolutely perfectly. I'm honestly in awe of your presentation and production skills, if you ever get tired of ruining peoples dreams by debunking physics-defying water, you should teach a class on presentations and public speaking, you're an absolute master, it would seem!

This presentation captures really well some of the joys of open-source. Building strange things for your own peculiar, particular use. Professionalization is alienating. The tool is a black box, the end product is meant for someone else. Open-source allows for a sort a artisan joy, an identification with both the process and the end product. Which isn't really a product. Because it's not something meant to be consumed or another black-box meant for someone to use further. It's its own thing.

I replicated that video and to fix the distribution i deleted a bunch of the balls to make it flat. That's why the balls move wierdly, they're hitting missing balls that got deleted from the bake.
