- Bada Khayal in Raag Jaunpuri by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan (Sabrang) assisted by his son Ustad Munawar Ali Khan.
Bade Ghulam Ali was born in Kasur, Punjab, British India. His father was a famous singer, Ali Baksh Khan, in a West Punjabi family of musical heritage.
Short rendition of Raag Jaijaivanti by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan
At the age of seven, he learned sarangi and vocal from his paternal uncle Kale Khan, who was a singer, and after his death he trained under his father.
Khan started his career by playing sarangi. He became popular after his debut concert in Kolkata.
Khan amalgamated the best of four traditions: his own Patiala-Kasur style, the Behram Khani elements of Dhrupad, the gyrations of Jaipur, and the behlavas (embellishments) of Gwalior. His voice had a wide range, spanning three octaves, effortless production, sweetness, flexibility and ease of movement in all tempi.
After the partition of India in 1947, Khan returned to his home in Pakistan, but returned to India later to permanently reside there. He did not approve of the partition, stating: "If in every home one child was taught Hindustani classical music this country would never have been partitioned." In 1957, he acquired Indian citizenship and lived at various times in Lahore, Bombay, Calcutta, and Hyderabad.
He was reluctant to sing for films, but sang two songs based on ragas Sohni and Rageshree for the 1960 film Mughal-e-Azam, in which his voice was represented as Tansen's by the music director Naushad. To dissuade Naushad, he demanded a high price, reportedly Rs. 25,000/- per song, when the rate for popular playback singers such as Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi was below Rs. 500/- per song.
Khan was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Padma Bhushan in 1962.
Khan was married to Ali Jiwai, who died in 1932. Khan's son, Munawar Ali Khan (1930--1989), was a classical singer. His grandson, Raza Ali Khan, is also a Hindustani classical singer.
Khan died in Hyderabad at Basheerbagh Palace in 1968, after a prolonged illness which left him partially paralyzed in his last years. He continued to sing and perform in public with the support of his son Munawar until his death.
After so many years I'm still looking for the adjective that can describe my feelings after listening to him... 🙏🙏🙏
I'm following you from last 20 years .. pronam neben 😊
I think you are not Kaushiki Chakraborty actually..... Right?
but kept listening against him in a concert by some announcer while quoting Ameer Khan sahb. he is father of Munawar Ali Khan sahb who actually taught ajoy Chakraborty g
Euphoria??
Me too
Apparently, I'm the only working-class "white" person on this thread. No matter. In spite of my leanings towards obscure Western jazz and rock (vulgar, for the most part) music, I have always had an ear for Raga and it's variants, though I can rarely remember or pronounce the names of the particular artists or song-titles. I'm not talking about Ravi Shankar or any of the current or "modern" Ragas that sound over-produced and seem to place more emphasis on technique rather than "feel". Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's Ragas are some of the best pieces of music that I've heard. The delivery is so visceral. Thanks in large part to the massive TH-cam music library, I'm slowly working towards a better appreciation and understanding of Raga in general. This Raag Janpuri is among my favorites. That's all.
+David Sutherland If you like Jaunpuri, you must listen to Mallikarjun Mansur
+Vijay RK Thank you for recommendation. I'll let you know if I like it. Thanks again.
+David Sutherland Dont just try to understand. Just flow along
+Narendra Purandare Thank you. Slow and low is my tempo.
I find Bade Ghulam Ali is the most gifted voice in Indian Classical. His voice is bold, sweet and melodious. It gives me a surreal feelings. I will recomend you to listen to Ustad Amir Kha. I am sure this will match your test
So often people forget the beautiful singing of Munawar Ali Khan accompanying Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.
can't blame them. that's what happens when you accompany Bade Gulam Ali Khan Sahib.
Sadly same thing happend with ustaad Istiak Hussain Khan sahib, He was a very talented singer but got covered with the his great father Ustaad Mustak HUssain Khan Sahib's genius
“Nothing grows under a banyan tree.” An old Indian proverb.
Since a child, these afternoon hours weighed heaviest, as in the tropical heat you are not allowed out of doors and for a child in the 70's there was not much of internet or games. The only thing available was radio...and gramophone..and radio usually had a jaunpuri broadcast in Kolkata-k centre around ten and after. So probably this is one raag I cannot fail to recognize. The tarana is surely beyond praise, I agree to bilal89ahmed.
Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was one of the greatest classical Indian Music Singers.
Not " one of the greatest" instead he is the " greatest of the all time greats"
In hindustani classical music.
Unique and unparalled !
The tarana starting around 13:00 is beyond praise. The feeling of Jaunpuri is unparallel to any other raag. For me it is like someone searching for his ideal relentlessly. He knows he will never find his ideal but without that relentless search life would not be worth-living.
Very good description.
Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Saheb's taans are superlative. They just keep flowing out with complete dexterity and it has so much soul. The words of the bandish are not very clear but it ceases to completely matter. You just want to hear more and more, its totally compelling.
1 crore times we can call gulamji as ustad. heard several concerts live .never get tired of him.voice birgas slow& fast mode all he is great .lord krishna was born as singer to give us treat.he is with us only
Sundararaghavan Venkatraman The name should be said as ghulam ali, not just ghulam as that is first of all only a fragment and secondly means `slave`. I like your comment however.
To me his voice represents god's voice. Whenever listens him finds no words to describe.
Ab aap jaise rag raguniya kaha..in rag raginiyo se amrut barasta hai
Aap ko koti koti pranam sir
No words to express my feelings. Simply superb rendition !! Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Saheb 🙏
Ayz mir wrote in his column, today
Spitual shato koti pronaam janaii ...
the laya (tempo) of the vilambit is intoxicating..supreme...
It is like hearing a jaipur-atrauli vocalist who sing vilambit in a similar tempo
@@kuldeepdongre3209 wow! 😲
:-( Pity pity pity the poor soul who fails to be touched by the sheer majesty and power of this most wondrous music.
A great master from yesteryears. India is proud to have had such musicians.
The whole thing is amazing, but this tarana will forever live in my mind.
As yet God has not made any one like khan saheb ,he was superb and will be superb forever
God has made none. Man made god

@@mem1001953 Gulam ji made himself. Well said. But couldn't agree with your view on God. Man has no power even to think of God fully. We only know him partially, not fully. Well, its your view on God. I don't have anything to say.
@@thelostgold731 yes sir. True. Our opinions are always ours.
In this era, youth make fun of this legendary classical singing. I feel sorry for them.
Heavenly Voice
Ustaad Barahy Ghulam Ali Khan Sahib 💐💐💐

Few names ...bade ghulam ali ji...nusrat fate ustad fateh ali. Mubarak ali amir khan ghulam ali salamat ali amanat ali few more but one of all the rarest in the world
Ustad Bade Gulam ali Khan's voice and his techniques are unique and special. I cannot help being hooked to his mastery and spellbinding attraction.
His son though not up to him, supported him well
David you are a gem .I salute your virtuosity and your great aesthetic sensibility that you can so beautiful describe the attributes of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali my favourite ustad and jsunpuri is my favourite raga.
Jeddy ,you’re a gem too
Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Saheb;s music has no boundaries
by the way Kasur is in punjab Pakistan
Only He can create such a feeling in a raag, where the creator is mourning, making us mournful, and the whole world is mourning. I am puzzled when I find some manlike creatures dare to dislike such a God of music and his creations.
Bade indeed! in both senses of the word :-) He was a great singer
Out of words ....
Wawa kya bat he
bade ghulam ali khan was probably the reincarnation of the celestial musician ' NARAD MUNI' . A rarest musician indeed.
I bow to those scientists who made recording possible to hear these Gems. What a joy if we could hear Tansen and Swami Haridas.
But our choice now is only bgak instead of swami haridas, tansen , or baijnath
most beautiful and soul stirring, total antidote to any kind of sadness or feelings of separation...
Ustad bade gulam ali khan ji is god for me
he became god for me in 1975 , when i consciously heard his discs for the first time , when i was 13 years of age..
Pure Class! One of the greatest exponents!
GREAT. GREAT. & GREAT.
What a melodious voice, taan, and all he created is only can be imagined and felt with soul. God gifted to us. We frequently used to hear his classical rags to reach to heaven.
🙏exalted peaceful, swarbistar ana Tarana are my favourite, and specially it comes heart attacking while listening in the delicate voice of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan in his extraordinary supernatural KHYAAL

Enlightening the Heart and Soul
There is never a 'best' of Bade Ghulam Ali saabji. He is always better than the best of all, and any. It is not possible to hear music like this elsewhere because it is never possible to give up a material existence to live a simply musical existence. That is the meaning of 'sadhana'..but, sorry, that word cannot be translated into any European language! :)
Nice song 👍
