One of my favorite planes in Magic, it boggles my mind why we haven't returned there in almost 20 years! Have you considered maybe retelling the block's story (Rhys' redemption, Ashling's quest, etc.) so a new generation of Magic players have a chance to hear some good lore? The books (which came with the Fat Packs) are impossible to find now, and I wouldn't mind getting a refresher myself. Thanks a lot for the video and heavy dose of nostalgia!
From what I've gathered, the popularity of lorwyn/shadowmoor seems to be mostly hindsight and nostalgia. Apparently, it performed pretty poorly on initial release.
I know it's nostalgia speaking, because this was when I got into Magic, but Lorwyn/SM is my absolute favourite setting in MTG, lorewise, mechanically wise, flavour wise.
@@codyjarvis4557 I always jokingly referred to Lorwyn as "Middle Earth," because of the strong resemblances to Tolkien's work it bore. lol The Kithkin are Hobbits. You can't change my mind on this!
@jacob4920 because it was actually fairly unpopular for various reasons. The question has been asked many times and the official response is always something along the lines of "It performed poorly, play was overly complex/messy, people didn't like that there were no humans". With that being said, Kamigawa was also poorly received but we returned because over time the opinions have warmed.
It will be fun to see this video again after the Lorwyn return the next year. Sadly the one plane per set release schedule leave us little time to connect with a plane like we did with Lorwyn/Shadowmoore. I would have love to see more of the new Planes New Cappena and Arcavios.
I received a Glen "Elendra Archmage" signed by Warren Mahy this afternoon, definitely a sign. Well to be fair, most of the signed cards I received today were linked to Zendikar and Mirrodin, but as you already explored those worlds, let's call it a sign ;) Small anecdote btw, a couple of years ago I watched every movie Tom Moore has directed after the release of wolfwalkers, and during the watching of "Song of the sea" whose main character is a selkie, as someone who's not from Ireland nor the British isles, I was in a "where the Hell did I heard of selkies before?" mood. You guessed it! Cheers!
I have always (since the very beginning, when I was just a boy) likened Kithkin peoples to "Hobbits," from JRR Tolkien's lore. Only these particular "Hobbits" are much more able to fight, and defend themselves, than the idyllic innocents of The Shire. I have to believe that's where the inspiration is most chiefly drawn from.
Ahhh....back when MTG was good, blocks existed, and the lore wasn't trash. Its a shame this set introduced planeswalkers, otherwise it would have been my favorite.
I think the word you're looking for is fascist... Socialist just means they would support that the community as a whole economically owns means of production and distribution.
@@MarcMTG So a long enough time from now that I might be DEAD by then! lol j/k, I'm still just salty from having to wait so many years to go back to Lorwyn.
Best plain in all of Magic. I adored Lorwyn/Shadowmoor and its story. Oona, Colfenor, his saplings Rhys (whose name literally means Hunter)… I can’t wait to go back!
Knowing we are eventually going back to Lorwyn, this lore primer is fantastic! I feel like Eldraine captured a lot of what Lorwyn was originally, but I've still wanted to go back for a long time. Thank you for producing this video! It was very informative.
You forgot about the Boggles, a race only found in Shadowmoor which believe they are the first race to ever walk the plane. They are Donkey looking creatures that steal from others believing it should be returned to them. Also, this was an awesome video hope you cover more lesser-known magic planes in the future.
I started playing several years after this block, so I never got to experience the story unfolding. When I learned about this set, and it’s inherit dichotomy, I was fascinated. It’s such a cool idea lore wise, the duality of life. Great video as always. I especially like you going into the lore from before my time
This is my all time favorite set, it's everything MTG should be. The flavor, mechanics, art and story was beautifully crafted. I sure do miss when they took their time creating a set to make it perfect. There is too much stuff coming from Wotc for them to craft another perfect set. Now it's just about alternate art.
Another good one. have you considered hitting up the balduers gate franchise? It might be tricky but with its fascinating characters and rich history it could also segway into folks with a d&d interest.
So far I'm really looking forward to "Perennial Order" after playing the demo. It looks to be something similar to shadow of the Colossus with more of a fast paced boss Rush game. The demo is still out for free and showcases three bosses.
I like your content, and was very excited to watch this video. However, I was unable to go past a few minutes due to the auditory crackle on every "s" you pronounce. Please make sure to use a de-esser plug-in on your audio file before publishing your video.
izotope RX suite includes a de-esser, they sell it individually, or you can purchase the suite and get access to a load of other cool tools. They usually sell the older suite version at a discount every so often.

With all of the various planes that MtG keeps "revisiting," why the hell haven't we gone back to LORWYN yet??? I miss that place!
Nah dawg it ain’t just you. I started in Urza Block n L/S is still my favorite block.

@@PhoenicopterusR Exactly. We went back to Kamigawa. So that excuse no longer flies.
Perfect timing. I have a player in my D&D group who came from this plane and I needed to know more.

Love the MTG lore videos.
I hope you do one on jodah one day, he has a lot of lore and is connected to a lot of important events
I really like your videos. You do a very good job.

Pretty sure kithkin were originally going to be called hobbits. I'd have to track down a source, but it's definitely not a coincidence.
one of the best sets ever produced. my decks from these sets are loved by everyone i play against win or loss
Good video

Add the races are good.
A place where all the elves are national socialists and Shadowmoor where everyone but the elves are national socialists.
😂

I miss Lorwyn and Shadowmoor times. Had a blast with elementals.

Lorwyn is my favorite plane. I wish they wotc will revisit it soon. I miss the tribal theme.
Lorwyn is my favorite plane in Magic. I hope when we go back to it that they don't screw it up too bad. I am very hyped for the return next year
This was my favourite set in MTG. I had a nasty red elemental deck.

It still boggles my mind that Wizards hasn't revisited this plane even once.
2025, apparently
Being that Lorwyn was ignorant of the Multiverse, I'm curious how the Phyrexian Invasion would alter their perceptions of society.

In general I like Lorwyn better, as white mana is more prevalent. But the transformation of the elves in Shadowmoore, who gain white, is fascinating.

I wonder if the plane changing between light and dark sides would affect any creature that is originally from there, no matter where they are.
My favorite block in magic. Came in during Alara block 08'
Really beautiful and unique plane. Hope it returns to the game someday
It’s time to go back. Shit would be wild.
