Agreed, more genuine. George Lucas handpicked director Irvin Kershner to direct 'Empire Strikes Back' due to the genuine realistic quality Kershner had brought to 'Return of a Man Called Horse.'

The layers in this film, and in the Paul Gallico book are myriad and complex. How wonderful, and how special to see it. It is a poor quality copy, but the only one out there.
Thanks for posting. No product placement, no car chases, no one on the movie poster pointing a gun at you. There's no comedy relief scene where she teaches him how to dance or try to be as care free as she is. No one's spouting tag lines for sound bites.

Reading Paul Gallico is even more imaginatively rewarding than watching a limited dimensional movie. The mind is free to fill so many gaps. 'The Man Who Was Magic' with the talking dog is so unusually entertaining.

Finally found..... I was only a child when I saw this movie, but I did not know its name, not its actors, nothing, only memories about the last sad scene when she goes away with the painting. ... How great is Internet!!!!... I never did give up, had to write and write questions to google, dates of drama movies of 60´s, 70´s, even 80´s, though I knew it was a old movie. But at last I got it. Thanks for share it, .. salute from Chile, land of Lighthouses.... !!!

This brings back memories. Along with my Lambretta-riding pals, I watched the 'lighthouse' structure being built atop a wartime pillbox at the end of Island Lane, near Kirby-le-Soken, Essex. We also saw a smoke machine creating the foggy scene with Richard Harris. The structure was taken down immediately after filming. I understand some other scenes were shot at nearby Landermere. It must have been the summer of 1971.

This movie is a great piece of art. Unlike the book, which is the forest, this movie is the tree. And it is a majestic specimen.
The pacing is quick, but is handled deftly, like a master watercolorist. We feel the emotional tug between Harris and Agutter, but the goose keeps the whole thing pure and noble. 3 creatures, 'orphaned' from the rest of their families, come together in a unique way. The results are joyous and devastatingly sad, but beautiful.
Richard Harris was asked about the great roles he played, late in his life, and of course he cited Lear, Oedipus, other classics. But The Snow Goose was right at the top of his list. His performance is nuanced and unforgettable.
It is a privilege to have seen this film again, now an old man, to remind me how good the world can actually be.

I have always loved this film for the story and the places and people I knew. Sailing barge Venture shown at Kirby Le Soken Essex. Ephraim Sharman and Bill Simpson both bargemen during the war years from Pin Mill. Tom Poldens boat from Heybridge Basin and the Lockhill at Heybridge Basin where I spent a lot of my youth on barges. The Blackwater and Walton Backwaters have always been some of my favourite places for their wildness and good memories. So glad we can still see this. Ha’penny Breeze another good film based on Pin Mill and now pretty much a time capsule.

This movie made me cry 40yrs ago & again today. Without birds & animals, which I have in abundance around my property, including birds that return each year, life would be colourless & dull. The love animals give in return to me fill my heart with love, & pride because we love each other. Richard Harris- a great actor. Macarthur Park a great, classic song by Richard Harris.

I'm a lifelong WWII history buff and when asked where I would have served had I lived then and had the choice I answer, "A civilian boater participating in the rescue of the British Expeditionary and Allied Forces at Dunkirk". This came directly from seeing "The Snow Goose" when I was 13. Today the new movie "Dunkirk" opens. I hope it does the event justice. Godspeed!

It did. And it compelled me to find this movie, which I still remembered, having only seen it once, in 1971. I think the movie was to Dunkirk what Private Ryan was to D-Day- that being, the closest most of us will ever get to understanding what it was like. And it was plenty close enough for me.

I also have seen both. I'm showing my students The Snow Goose today, and many of them have also seen Dunkirk. To me, Dunkirk was great visually, full of sound and fury. But The Snow Goose uses character and story, not bells and whistles, so it is much more powerful, despite the grainy, sometimes dark visuals of the 1971 version.

There are no real words to describe this film - stunning, moving, classic, dramatic, sensitive - are all understatements of the true value of this film. Superb story-line, acting quality, music, timing, and many more aspects make it such a special movie. The juxtaposition of speech, music and moments in the story-line, provide such impact and humanity. I too saw this when it came out, on TV in Portsmouth, with my parents who had been in the RAF, my father particularly who although he wasn't in Dunkirk, was actively on base assisting the pilots and planes. This film provided me with that connection to history and my family which I had never lived through. I could understand the need for good, for people to be good and to do good things for others. To not stand by idly and just watch. How important a message or messages this film has for human kind anywhere. How sad that for whatever reasons the film was never made widely available and how awful that a few should prevent others from seeing this work of audiovisual art. The film score is perfect. The call to help on the radio has such urgency. The final scenes where Fritha is talking with those returning on the boat, "we buried him at sea", the bat's horn, the engine and then the music and the Snow Goose. It is truly a work of art and has haunted me my entire life. It always brings me to tears, thinking of such huge sacrifices those men, and their families, paid for our safety and future. I do hope someday soon the good digital remastered version will appear, and the issues surrounding its blocking to the world, are lifted, and due praise can be publicly given to all those involved in its production. A great author whose book was turned into reality. Thank you for posting this so others can feel for it.

Beautiful. I tried to ask the film distributors Hallmark about it once but they said there was a dispute with the Gallico estate and it would likely never be resolved.
Galileo wouldn't let the band Camel use any text to create lyrics for their album The snow goose. as he thought they were promoting cigarettes. So it became an instrumental album. It's beautiful too.

Apparently, this is one of those films that has been butchered for TV over the years to the point that the copies left in the public domain are missing 10 to 20 percent of their original length. This is a film that should be preserved in it's entirety. The chemistry between Harris, Agutter and the Snow Goose is precious.

It is sad but don't forget it is as beautiful as it is sad. And think just how much the sweet man deserved heaven. We must all strive to be like him. A friend of my family at my church, Bill Ward was one of the many soldiers who's life he saved at Dunkirk. I can see this film being remade. Perhaps I would love me the thought of the girl remaining at the lighthouse with all the birds and continuing his good work. I would like to know if that happened.

With respect, this is a classic and a remake would-be an injustice !
The girl did not return for she brought the painting with her when she left. She had again lost her family but this time as a young woman who was in love.A hideous loss at any age. That she also lost the Snow Goose is just more heartbreaking. That the Snow Goose left when Philip said that she would never leave the first time she returned to them also made it pointless for her to stay for the Snow Goose did leave because she knew Philip was not returning. The bewildering and agonizing pain to be there without them would be too much to take !
I hope they never make a remake ! There are film restorers who should, by all means, fully restore this classic performance !

...looks like to won a BAFTA for best television film. Looks like the last batch of our WWII soldiers (and adults when WWII started) are passing, including some notable fighter pilot aces who bravely defended Great Britain in the Battle of Britain.

Many months have passed since the view of the film..I have now 5 geese who have lost their way during the migration. It is the most wonderful sight to see the wing formation here in France when the assemble takes place ready for the migration south, Then in spring they return It warms the heart..Such wonderful birds bringing warmth to stressed souls .
I have one goose called Oscar who could not fly with the wing during the fall (Autumn) because of a bad leg and is now my pal. I.have failed to find a wife for him until today...enter Bub Bub..a specked goose with a bit appetite for a mate !!!!!!
All are doing what geese do at this time of the year...Watch this space if you like geese...if not watch Trump !!

Not only Canada...Here in France I observed a number of flights during last Autumn. We have a lake close by and to see the birds circle the lake picking up the flight is something else.
Last year we had 2 wings heading south , one of 150 birds and a second of 60. I wait today beginning of April to see the return.
The birds are of different plumage from the Canada geese in that they predominately brown...but they still head South and return in the Spring.

215,00 British soldiers and another 123,000 French were evacuated from Dunkirk between May 26, and June 4, 1940. Many thousands of civilians answered the call and sailed into a combat zone. The movie "Dunkirk" was well made, but not historically accurate. The men were concealed from the Luftwaffe by heavy cloud cover most of the time. Otherwise the Germans would have won the war. The fate of the world hung in the balance.

    • @natalyahennings1085

Forgot about the Russians who at that time were already driving the Nazis back to Germany and would have won the war anyway. The Allies entered the war way too late, the Russians didn't need them. The Allies were hurrying there to divide the European pie and not let the Russians liberate the rest of Europe. My goodness, how the Western world has been brainwashed, and fooled by the media.

She was a beautiful young woman there but they gave her a strangely posh accent. Anyway, the tale itself is beautiful and it all fits together here even if they didn't quite make it to the final outcome regarding the lighthouse.

Her accent is supposed to be from the Essex marshes, places that haven't changed much since Saxon times, like her name. I think she nailed it pretty well but ask someone from East Anglia.

Paul Gallic was a great writer and one I tried to imitate as a newspaper reporter. This is a wonderful story but Anglophiles should read Scruffy for the astute observations about the English personalities as much as the sweet and hilarious story. With CGI it could be made into a very good movie even if comedian Terry Thomas is no longer around to play the brigadier.

I saw this decades ago on PBS, I think and love the tale. In the original short story, the main character is handicapped and lame. He and the girl become lovers. However, in those days it was unacceptable so the author had to change it. Thus, he and the girl are just friends.

    • @peterrebelwithoutamenopaus6962
      @peterrebelwithoutamenopaus6962 ปีที่แล้ว

They were lovers in a pure sense. I don't mean this in a prudish way. They were lovers but didn't consumate it. Beautiful.
I remember a documentary about the Battle of Britain where a WAAF met a Spitfire pilot, and they went on "a weekend" to a hotel, but she said they didn't make love. He was killed in action a few days later. She said she regretted afterwards that they hadn't made love. She actually heard him on the radio in his final dogfight as she worked in the operations room. It's true. She's always worn the badge he gave her around her neck. She remarried and had children, whom she loves dearly, but her husband and children know about the badge and are happy that she still wears it.

I have a small rescue farm in France.Geese are very intelligent birds and respond well to love, kindness and a gentle voice. I have now 2 girls having lost their way found sanctuary here. I call them by name and cuddle the them as you would a dog or cat.
Bub Bub the smaller bird will put her foot on top of mine whilst being cuddled so that I will not leave.
Top story from Paul Callico and terrific music from Camel..also watch the video Fly Away Home.
Finally when Bub Bub gets a husband we will have a family...Take care Nancy
