    With the traditional terrestrial and satellite TV systems likely to be replaced by streaming their services over the Internet, should the 'net services become inoperative for whatever reason, getting comms going in the future may fall on all of us radio users. Robust systems that can operate without any reliance on a third party operated by various radio users with participation between all forms of radio (Amateur, CB, GMRS, FRS, PMR446, Business Radio and 11m Freeband etc.)

    Great insight into a possible future event Gary. That's what many people think nowadays that their phones/computers etc will always work and be online and contact will always be guaranteed but they'd be wrong thinking it. All manner of radio as a whole could potentially come together to relay comms, info and broadcasts out over the airways when things go to pot. It's always good to have a means of powering a radio station whether it's CB or Amateur radio off-grid as it were. But yes, a great insight to what the radio community could come together to provide and help in those situations. All the best mate, hope you and the family are keeping well. Best 73' Mike.

      My feelings exactly Mike - be nice if there was a cross-platform event sometime to test things out. Cheers.

      @@ukcbtv That's a great idea as it goes, I'd certainly be up for that and getting onto high ground in East Sussex for sure.

    Another brilliant video from you Gary. Smartphones are definitely not the way to go in a sticky situation, too easily tracked and first to get their network destroyed.

      Great when they work but surely the first thing to get hit with a serious cyber-war attack. Cheers.

    We are putting too much faith in the Interweb these days, even your telephone (Landline) is going to VoIP (Internet phones) if the power goes off you can't phone emergence services, not even from your mobile! TV going onto the internet is fine if you have a superfast connection, but will 1 playing games, 1 watching Netflicks, 1 working from home and me on TH-cam, there are times it struggles, then it drops the internet for a while! What hope do we have?

      @ukcbtv  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely Bob and even if you do have a 'old-fashioned' landline that comes over copper, it's not long before it's converted to VOIP over fibre down at the exchange. Cheers.

      @@ukcbtv Another thing, if you are in a car and want to listen to the radio, do you have to have an Internet connection just to listen to a local or otherwise radio station? In some areas that will not happen, it is bad enough trying to hear a radio station at times without hunting for the Internet!!!!

    I would not consider myself a prepper but we keep a certain amount of food and water in at all times and have alternative means of generating and supplying 12v power for critical services such as lighting and to access whatever comms are still up (including CB if I can get out of this valley!). All this at a normal looking house populated by normal looking people (actually pretty ugly, but mostly normal). This all means that we hopefully wont put as much pressure on the services that are still available in a STHF situation so that less well prepared people can be looked after: privatise the problems and socialise the solutions. Unfortunately, collectively, we have converged on a decreasing number of points of failure, with common modes, such that even pretty small perturbations to "normal" life have pretty poor outcomes. It just feels fragile.

      Great comment - and it does feel fragile! To me, a level of preparedness just feels like the normal thing to do and I see resilience reducing all the time as more and more of our essential services become part of the Internet. All the best.

    Excellent video. People that are not into radio just don't get it, and seem to think their smartphones will always still work.

    Started prepping for SHTF (which will be up on us i the next couple of years in my estimate.) So now looking to invest in Comms for SHTF. Anyway. not sure about ditching Sat TV. I have both Sat TV and a lot of streaming apps on the Internet. So for me this is redundancy. If the Internet goes down, I can still watch TV. And the Internet does go down a lot for a lot a people in this bloody country.

      I hope that the service providers do keep the traditional services available like FM radio, Sat TV and Terrestrial TV, but I fear it's in terminal decline as these services are being increasingly served via mobile 4g/5g, public WiFi and home broadband - we do need to make sure that, in the event of SHTF, we can establish comms ourselves with basic and robust equipment that operates independently of third parties. All the best with the preps - hopefully they won't be needed, but best to be safe than sorry! Cheers.

      Glad it was helpful! - it's a big shout with what radio to get, but I'd probably go with a cheap AM/FM radio and make up a go-box/bag and get something with SSB for the car. Cheers.
