East German Assault Rucksack, w/ Plash Palakta, Wool Blanket and Greatcoat

  • A short overview of the East German Assault pack. I used it for an overnighter and had it loaded out with my sleep system of one wool blanket, a British wool greatcoat, a plash palakta (used as a bivvy) and a military space blanket for a ground cloth. It also carried my shelter system for the night, which included two plash palakta that were set up in an A-frame configuration.
    The pack carried very well. It was light and maneuverable. Utilizing the front carry straps and attaching them to my belt greatly enhanced the carry, taking some of the load off the shoulders and distributing it the hips. It is lined with a rubber interior bag, making it quite water resistant and can be found readily on the surplus market for around $10 to $15.

    I was just looking at those literally last week, great pack, very cheap in price, bomb proof. And the raindrop camo is sweet! Nice review brother!

      SurvivorMetalMan Thanks brother! The camo is definitely growing on me! Wasn’t sure how the pack was going to be until I took it out, but it rode super well. Cheers!

    I like keeping the y straps as is so I can attach it to my belt and use it to hold it up closer to my torso so I can actually put stuff on it.

    Right on, we have a lot of the same equipment..lol. I've found that if you keep your equipment simple and well maintained it will last forever and you will have a better time if you're well packed and organized. The older European military surplus is awesome, its military but not the traditional military surplus that people are used to seeing, so its also good for the grey man stuff as well. And better built than most of the civilian market has to offer. Keep it up! Really enjoying your videos!!

      Awesome! It really is hard to believe the bang for buck that this old gear offers. Its just sitting there collecting dust, while everyone is hitting up REI or the latest "bush" kit. You are spot on about the grey man usage, as this stuff sure offers the function without being overtly tactical. Thanks for the support.

    I have two and hang one from the bottom of the other, facing the opposite way. Works a treat and with two zeltbahn ponchos (plash palatkas) it is solid gear.

    I got a 3fer off the sportsmansguide 2 years ago for cheap but looks like they are out. They are great packs for what they are.
    I like my Russian veshmeshok for a day bag.

      OKBushcraft Nice! Sportsman’s Guide can be pretty sweet for surplus deals. Their quality control is a little lax sometimes, though. Just sent back an F1 rucksack that was listed as like new. Hardware was rusted through and the mold was so strong, I could smell it at the post office before taking out of the package. So it goes.
      Have a good one!

      Ive about stopped using them. They sell more knock offs than true quit often now days. I've had issues on stuff too. My Swedish lk35 pack came with a fist sized hole in the side. Granted, they replaced it but it should not have left the warehouse.
      I prefer Verustaleka out of Finland more, they have good affordable Euro surplus. Plus their $9.99 flat rate shipping to the US compared to $17 or so from Wisconsin or wherever.

    A bit too small for me. I even tried it with US Alice pack straps. But 2 of them have made grand saddle bags on my enduro.

    I have a German Flektarn rucksack, outstanding pack it really is,...except for the harness system that is very weak. The harness on the pack you show looks like it would benefit the Flektarn ruck. Keep an eye out for the German rucksack folding sleep mat. They are issued with the pack but if you purchase the pack on the surplus market it most likely wont have the sleep mat. Very handy device that earns its ride by not taking up too much room in the pack. There are warmers mats that's for sure, but I always have it with me. It is designed to give the pack padding and internal support. There's a good chance it would fit the E. German pack.

      Tramontane Excellent. Will do. Haven’t come across the Flektarn yet. Will have to check it out. Found some East German field pants with the rain drop camo. The camo is really growing on me.

    Nice Jess. How does it compare to the French F1 & F2 rucks? Capacity, load carriage, etc.?
    Nate

    • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Journeyman 71 they are pretty close, the f2 has two side pouches and 1 internal compartment with an external pouch. the f1 has 2 internal compartments and an external. Love em both, but the metal buckles on the F1 are superior to the f2’s plastic clasps. If the F2 was a little newer, it would work better, but as it has aged the straps have gotten more pliable and are a bit more tedious to use than the F1.

  • @sarthalion
    @sarthalion ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm looking at this rucksack, could get an unissued one for cheap. Also French F1 bags are available here in Europe now for cheap. Which one do you prefer? (I'll probably get them both anyway). I'm carrying pretty simple kit. Wool blanket, tarp, sheepskin etc.

    • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like both. The F1 seems like it would work well with a belt kit underneath it to support it. The german pack is ridiculously good for the money. Waterproof, simple and functional. The straps can be modded or replaced with something newer. The straps it comes with work very well, but again, designed for a belt kit. When used in that way, with a belt, the carrying is exceptional.

    • @sarthalion
      @sarthalion ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EnduranceRoom Yeah. I'll try to keep the weight around 10kg so I think that the german traps will be good enough. Maybe I'll buy Särmä traps padding for them, I've heard that they fit for the german pack very well :)

  • @clinnyboy
    @clinnyboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    how much weight are you carrying with this setup? I don't find it so much uncomfortable due to weight especially using the waist belt as intended but I'm more concerned with the strain on the 'Y" straps where they are stitched together at the central point.

    • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe 35lbs plus another 10 or so in the haversack. Carries very well with a belt. The straps should be fine, especially if they are clipped with the D rings. Solid little packs.

    Shame you didn't opt into using the belt system as well. I find it so handy for little trips away from the campsite.
