Dementia: Fusi's story

Dementia is a condition that affects more than 70,000 New Zealanders - of that Pasifika make up nearly 3000. An incurable disease, for many it’s a hard topic to talk about. But as Moana Makapelu Lee found out, one family is making it their mission to spread awareness about dementia with a little bit of laughter and a whole lot of love.

Brought tears to my eyes.. my mum SAmoan has early stage of dementia.. sheis getting forgetful.. It is very hard not to get al emotinoal and frustrated at times. I am her caregiver, a small family, so my daughter is 11, and that keeps my mum going. my daughter puts Shortland Street and Home and Away on TV. they are the only programmes she remembers, so she will be watcihing same thing over and over. Sadly mum was a social butterfly, but now just confined at home, and we go out for lunch or breakfast on weekend to get her out of hoiuse. i work from home to care for her. I make sure i have me time, or otherwise i would be stressed out. Nice to have big families, but in ours there is only myself and my daughter. She is well and that is important. If only she stays away from turning my Wifi off. Blessings to all the mum and dads who have dementia, and also for all the families dealing with Dementia.. Be Strong..
