    Those are good points, tho I don't agree that it's still a lock knife, furth in regards to the wave/charge, although you can remove the washer, I don't see how that would stand, assuming you did have a wave/charge with you, along with the correct bits, it will take at least a few minutes to remove the screws, wash etc, probably dropping parts, by that time anyone who may be victim to the leatherman will long gone so I don't see how that would stand up.
    The police don't know the law, they only in force it, I've asked questions at a police station in regards to bows, not one person has the awnser, in a police Sgt, and a firearms officer. I think we might be thinking too hard about this, while trying to reason with unreasonable people. Just my opinion 🙂

      It doesn't make sense to me either being as you'd have to have the bits with you but the law is sadly quite vague allowing for colourful interpretation at will for those with the power to do so. It's seemingly just depends on the mood the PC is in, couldn't find anything definitive online either, a real shame for my charge. I'd agree on the thinking too hard, general consensus seems to be carry one, just don't be a prat about it and they'll have no reason to search you. Cheers -Al

      @@UKLegalCarryKnives indeed, I've noticed most people just seem to carry them as is anyway, and most of the time you're not going to be stopped, and even you are, you don't need to speak to the police unless you are being detained, and they need grounds for that, I recommend reading up on your rights if stopped by the police.
      www.gov.uk/arrested-your-rights
      As you said tho, so long as you're not acting like a nob it should be fine, that said the law as it stands is complacted and unfair and I fear the law will change banning even currently UK EDC knives. I'm thinking we need to be a bit more proactive before that happens, as well as try to get the law changed to alow us to carry all multi tools.

      I'm debating whether to mod a BM 945 into uk legal but I've held back as I'm unsure on the legitimacy of it being classed as such .

    • @UKLegalCarryKnives
      @UKLegalCarryKnives  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be a very nice carry! A UK legal axis knife would be a sure favourite for me, shouldn't be too hard but your concern is well placed, if they're just going to classify it as a broken lock knife it makes the whole deal pointless, I'd at least hope a PC would see the not inconsequential effort made to follow the law and not confiscate it or worse, sadly all conjecture on my part :(

    • @resgestae5939
      @resgestae5939 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you’re missing the point here.
      It isn’t a question of the practicality of reinstating the locking action by removing a washer or by reverting the washers to their original positions whilst on the street! That would be an absurd preposition. The point is that it could be held that it remains a lock knife for as long as the alteration is nonpermanent and reversible - irrespective as to where or when such a reversion might occur.

    I've never been stopped and searched, I'm well into my 70s and carry whatever seems appropriate for the day, whether it locks or not. If you look dodgy, hang out with dodgy characters or behave suspiciously, then you're increasing your risk of whatever they decide to do about it. I am aware of what might happen but what you've been doing is ridiculous, the tool has locks for safe operation, you've reduced it to a letter opener. If I was going shopping or to a public event, I'd usually carry nothing but on my daily country walks I usually carry whatever appeals to me from my collection.

    I have also removed the locking mechanisms on Leatherman.
    I have a Squirt PS4 and agree this is more a curiosity than for day to day use, just for attaching to a key ring. I also have a Leatherman Juice XE6 which does not have any locking system straight from the factory. It is my understanding that the Juice is legal in the UK.

    Well presented and researched. I have a Surge, but don’t carry it in public. I use it when I go fishing, but leave it in my tackle bag, and if I go to do diy, it goes in the tool bag. These are reasonable and arguably legitimate points. Although I couldn’t find it in me to actually snap off the locking parts, as you have done. So I live with it sitting in a prominent place indoors and used often, for all sorts…love it!

    Constables decisions are not infallible, we've seen this on lockdown enforcement, but unfortunately costs money to defend and could end up with the wrong type of precedent. Sadly the country we live in. I've removed the two knife blades from my Rebar and replaced with tools from a Sidekick/Wingman. I think there is a big difference between blades and tools. Blades in the pocket can be illegal, a screwdriver (in the pocket) only becomes offensive when presented threateningly. There are plenty of really good UK legal knives, my current favourite carry is a Real Steel Luna.

    Very interesting video and you have gone to great lengths to comply with the law, and I sincerely hope you are never pulled up for carrying it. It is ridiculous that you have to mutilate and disable these tools so much making them quite dangerous to use for the designed job by making them non locking and able to trap ones fingers when using them

    Might be easier just to ask Leatherman to make a range of EDC UK legal tools, it's not just the UK with somewhat restrictive knife laws, there are other countries as well so there must be a market for such tools.

    It's a shame leatherman don't make an EDC variant for the UK market, they after all made a two handed opener for Germany to comply to their laws. Simply a variant of the case without springs for the blade and an adjustment to the torque of the screws should make it a pretty effective friction folder.

    The mods you did on the rebar will work on the free series, where all the tools are outside accesable.
    For my Charge tti, I heated and bent the liner locks so they barely engaged and would slip under pressure. I recently undid the mod as I lost my Surge (work tool)
    I find the SAK cybertool 34 useful for street carry.

    I have the leatherman sidekick which would be a good option for the mod you did on the charge. As non of the tools on the inside actually lock there is no reason to get rid of anything once the lockbar for the knife is removed. Thanks for the info 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

  • @alcw6346
    @alcw6346 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The closed multi tool as a lock concern is based around the locking knife = fixed blade case law from Harris vs DPP which stated "readily foldable at all times" not sure about the other test case with broken lock decision.
    I know you don't mind mods but I could never have done that to a charge, a wave yes but not a charge. For UK legal, you could just buy a used Juice, I find it has done everything I need for years despite being a bit smaller.

  • @RichardMottram
    @RichardMottram 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If the squirt is too small you could get the CS Juice which is a bit bigger but still a folder.

  • @sambowdenuk
    @sambowdenuk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I saw another leatherman mod used in either a surge or a wave which I'm very tempted to try at some point, and that actually involved getting a mora craftsman fixed blade knife, cutting the handle off and drilling a hole for a pivot, but leaving a larger radius around the outside of said pivot; to then do a blade switch. That means that you can change the standard leatherman blade with a liner lock into a modified mora blade with a detent retaining system. Much more long-winded, but it requires no permanent damage to the leatherman, and as the mora craftsman line is the exact thickness stock of the leatherman blade stock, you only need very minimal tools to do it. You can also reshape the blades or do etches/engravings on the mora's, because they are so cheap it doesn't matter if you mess one up.

      @MDM1992 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anyone who didn't take that far of a reach to court is a fool, the law specifically states non locking under 3 inches requires no reason to carry day or night, and therefore CANNOT be considered going equipped, even a screwdriver isn't classed as a sharply pointed object or as going equipped. I would fight that charge to the bitter end and even claim compensation for my unlawful arrest etc. It's on them to prove your intent, having a perfectly legal tool in your pocket alone is NOT lawfully enough to determine your intent, unless they saw you brandishing it, or prying at a car door, shed window etc.. they couldn't possibly lawfully charge you for going equipped based on simply having it in your pocket. When i've been asked what my reason is for carrying my legal edc tools, i reply no more than "because the law very clearly states i can in black and white" they don't need ANY more reason than that.
