Altogether now ‘IN THE DAYS WHEN WE HAD AN AIR FORCE’.
👍👍👍
And in the days when we had a summer 🙂
@@markhealy9361 Akrotiri is usually sunny mate.
A shadow of its former self.
Definitely a better time for the RAF. These days I heard there has been huge recruitment problems on a YT podcast channel.
My grandson is in the eighth week of Basic training at RAF Halton. he waited thirteen months from first applying to arriving at Halton and he had to push them. A major part of the problem is its now run by a civilian company, I spoke to his flight sergeant, he said it can take two years. I joined the RAF a year after this film was made, serving for twenty three years, yes it was a better time.
A much better RAF, I can assure you.
What an airforce we had then....so many types at the peak of their powers....😊
Waow that tire bust at high speed and runway excursion with a F-4 was no joke
A really great documentary. 👏👏👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it
Good sharing 👌
Thank you 👍
I love the sound of a diesel firing up when the LIGHTNINGS scramble..!
The fuel in Military jet engines is called AVTUR, in civilian jets it's basically the same stuff but called jet A1.
@@davegoldsmith4020 indeed but surely he’s referring to the diesel powered GPU/air start cart?
@@adriancash7063 The lighting had an internal starter fuelled by isopropyl nitrate, known as AVPIN, an explosive mixture that had a very distinctive sound when the engines started.
Houchin.
@@davegoldsmith4020 Spot on. Having done 5 yrs on 5 Sqn at Binbrook, it always makes me laugh at the amount of people who talk sh1te about Lightnings.
That sounds like 🎙Anthony Quail, eagle has landed
Goodness, having joined the Service in 1962, certainly this takes me back! Nice to see all the old British aircraft, but sad to realise that the domestic aircraft industry has been decimated, largely due to the policy of successive British governments.
Thanks for following.
Just like Hollywood had its Goden Age, I think this documentary reflects RAF's Golden Era. You really get the impression of a large combat-ready organisation, where all levels interact with eachother. Times change with new challenges. We are now in a digital and knowledge- based age, not to mention artificial intelligence, where you will have to do things in a different way. I wonder if RAF is not in the middle of such a restructuring process.
Excellent. Shame the sound cuts out at the end.
Sorry, but we must respect the copyright,Thanks for following.
Quite right.
But At 1:18 and 1:20 definitely sounds like a diesel GPU being started. Of course the sound may have been dubbed later & is out of sequence or maybe the sound engineer was having a larf 🤷🏼. I recall folk playing much the same sound over the PA whilst starting an ATP.
Gonna tentatively suggest this is a little later than 1969.
Those Lightnings are F.6s and I seem to recall that 56 Sqn converted from F.3s to F.6s in 1972?
Sir Anthony Quayle actor narrating
Did we really have jets on QRA for intercept in what looks to be Cyprus (or anywhere hot enough for KD to be worn)?
Certainly did!
NEAF (Near East Air Force), maintained the Lightnings of 56 Sqn and the Vulcans of IX and 35 Sqns.
I was nobbut a lad in 1970 but I was there and witnessed many a scramble.
Vulcan ones were especially entertaining!
apparently the RAF are so woke white men ate not acceptable yet they csn’ t recruit . enough people to yo train as aircrew perhsps we need a better vlss of vibil servsnt at yhr MoD s hovetnmrnt interested in the UK might help too vote Reform!
@@timothyseabrook1584 No that’s not true, the vast majority in the RAF are still white and male so don’t be put off joining by that. You may want to brush up on your written English for the aptitude test though. Good luck.
