  • In this talk, Diana Mahabir-Wyatt challenges the taken for granted assumption that democracy is possible. In this talk, she gives very clear examples of where most of instances where most of assume we have democracy when we do not.
Diana Mahabir-Wyatt has been an activist for Human Rights since childhood. She has advocated for equality for girls in primary and secondary school, marched against racism and war in university. She was an independent Member of the Senate of Trinidad & Tobago for nine years mainly dealing with Industrial Relations and Social Development Legislation. She is a strange combination of serene and affectionate support and steely determination, perhaps shaped by an early childhood growing up in Canada amid refugees from war zones and concentration camps. Her advocacy for the victims of domestic violence and child abuse are well known. Less well-known are her stories for children and her addiction to studies on comparative religion and philosophy.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The problem with democracy isn't that all people are created equal.. it is most of the time most people want "equal in their favor".. and that is not democratic.

Democracy is too often an excuse for tyranny. Keep your democracy, I'll have just the freedom.

Huh? That makes no sense. Like I know authoritarian populism can appear from either side. But that’s not democratic values like having the right to vote(which should be a constitutional amendment)

The only thing is, I think she's ultimately too optimistic about the effects the internet has on us, and the human race as a whole.

There are people who are better at everything that I am. There are people who are better looking than I am, there are people who are naturally more intelligent and talented than am. There are people who are even more ethical . Its NOT FAIR. Everbody should be born exactly the same. Life Is Not Fair! Is the cause of this injustice Mother Nature or Father God? There are inequalities caused by nature and inequalities caused by nurture. I think that all people are EQUALLY HUMAN, EQUALLY people. Even if the are different. I think there that it a myth that any Utopian democracy currently exists. I am skeptical that there ever will be a Utopian Democracy. However I do think we are perhaps too moving towards the Utopian ideal. 🤔😉😏
