The World: Monks from the Bronx take on a tough Irish town

  • The economic crisis in Ireland is making for a gloomy holiday season there. It is especially tough in Limerick, the city that featured in Frank McCourt's memoir "Angela's Ashes." The poverty, unemployment and deprivation portrayed in the book are still evident in the suburb of Moyross. And that is exactly why a group of men from NewYork have moved in. Not just any men though- they are Franciscan friars based in the Bronx. The World's Laura Lynch has more.

I'm 61 and yet I feel so lost in the world, but I sure would love to trade places with those kids just to be with these Monks to spiritually grow with them!!

I've met the brother in the video. He is an amazing man who has given his whole life in service to the poort. The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal give away everything at the end of the year and start fresh with zero, nothing. At the end of the year they will have rehabilitated an entire apartment building for the poor.
Incidentally, they are not monks. They are Friars. Monks stay in the monastery. Friars go out into the world.

A lot of wonderful comments. Just a kindly lesson: Monks are different than Friars. Monks live and stay (for the most part) in a Monastery and Pray and Work. Friars (Latin for Brothers) go out into the World and preach and work and pray with various peoples who need help and comfort. Friars usually live in "houses" not monasteries.

God Bless this guy, you can tell that He is a nice guy from God, whoever says I now believe in God should ask themselves why. Its not about believing in God, its about asking God to come inside you in Spirit and ask Jesus for the Holy Spirit ... and really wanting this from the bottom of your being, not wanting to be alone anymore, hurt, broken, etc.. and not using sin like a drug to cover up the pain like ALL do ... or money, sex, or whatever they use to feel something, anything but the pain.

A reply to,There is no Salvation out side of the Catholic Church. When Peter found a man preaching and healing that did not belong to their group he told Jesus that he,d stopped him. Jesus said"Who gave you the right to stop him, those that are for me can not be against me." Again when he talked of the last judgement Jesus said,"On that day many will come saying Lord,Lord it is I you faithful servant who worked at every thing for you, begone I,ll say you never loved and to many thieves and prostitutes I,ll say come into my father house where there is a place for you,for when I was hungry you gave me to eat and when sick you nursed me,naked you clothed me ,in prison you visited me ect." When did we do these things Lord for we have never even heard your name."When you did to the least of my brothers you did unto me. Again Jesus said "As you judge others so I will give you that judgement. Saint Paul said always see the other person as better than your self. I am a life long catholic and I love the church but she is a useless teacher.

    • @alexandergebreyesus7381
      @alexandergebreyesus7381 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The difference between monks and frairs are while the former live in one place as a cloister for the great of their life sheltered by a wall away from the world, the latter the live in the world but not belonging to the world. Both take three same vows---chastity, celibacy, and poverty. So, strictly speaking although monks are not frairs but frairs are monks.

      Alexander Gebreyesus - You’re right.

    • @lmtt123
      @lmtt123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Sorry but you're wrong. Monks do not take the three vows of chastity, poverty and obedience known as the Evangelical Counsels . They take vows of stability, conversion of life and obedience to the abbot. Friars move around, monks rarely do. Friars go out and preach, teach, run parishes and evangelise. The only reason friars etc mention the word "monk" is to add kudos but it is a deception.

@MrMarcusirish God has never told me to do a thing, I tell all to ask for the Holy Spirit / Living Water from Christ as they read His words because it feels so good when He gives it that a person is compelled out of love, out of loving all people, to share with them. With you. Right now you can choose to ask Christ for the Living Water, choose to ask for a week, see what happens, TRY. It can't hurt you, can it? Seek & you shall find.

    "Nazaritenn Friar's Charism"
(Is a burden for The souls of the unsaved!
We have a zeal to seek and save them that are lost, to forsake all, to live with what we carry, . . . heralding the gospel of salvation. 1.Luke14:33 2.Mark 16:15 3.Romans 10:14-18 or Hodos! )
Being a Nazaritenn Friar is a Vocation (a calling), a "Way" of Life"..."or Hodos in Greek"
A Nazaritenn Friar is not a Roman Catholic or a Protestant, we are not calvinist or arminian. We are first century believers in the Way of Christ or Hodos in the Greek.
Being a Friar, is forsaking all, to have all by faith in Christ . . .Luke 14:33 Whosoever KJV Matthew 19:27-29 Luke 6:38.
A Friar is a man or woman, that is a bold slave to Christ, we are not our own, we where bought with a price... Galatians 3:28 Exodus 21.
A Nazaritenn Friar lives by faith, living with what they can carry...having no where to lay our heads...living like our master, did when he was on earth....Luke 9:2-6 Luke 9:58.
A Nazaritenn Friar, is a pilgrim in a strange Land. . .a hermit, who travels into the World to Preach the Gospel of Salvation to this lost an dying world. . . This is not our home we are just passing through. . ..1 Chronicles 29:15
    ....
    Principles
    1. We covenant together, as the Order of Naw-Zeer Way of Christ...Christ Way of Living, Nazaritenn Friars, to observe the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ by following the example of Saint Francis of Assisi, who made Christ the inspiration and the center of his life with God and people. Nazaritenn Friars should devote themselves especially to careful reading of the gospel, going from gospel to life and life to gospel.
    2. We seek to encounter the living and active person of Christ in our brothers and sisters, in Sacred Scripture, in the Church, and in liturgical activity...and Worship.
    3. We shall go forth as witnesses and instruments of the Church’s mission among all people, proclaiming Christ by our life and words. Called like Saint Francis to preach the Gospel of Salvation to the lost, and inspired by his example, let us devote ourselves, and our whole being to living Luke 14:33 forsaking all (Whosoever KJV) then Mark 16:15 because of Romans 10:14-17.
    4. As Spirit Filled Brothers and Sisters according to Acts 1:4-8 we will go out in the Power of the Holy Ghost, proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all men and women that are lost without salvation.
    5. Following the example of Jesus, let prayer be the soul of all we are and do. Praying without ceasing singing and rejoicing praising God. . . Praying in tongues singing in tongues rejoicing in tongues before the holy and righteous God...in Christ Jesus.
    6. The Order of Naw-Zeer Way of Christ...Christ Way of Living shall exist to proclaim the gospel to the lost and dying outside of Christ. Going into all the world by faith living with what we can carry.
    7. We shall faithfully fulfill the duties proper to our various circumstances of life. We shall proclaim the gospel of salvation with boldness and zeal in the Holy Ghost to all lost people outside of Christ, presenting a gospel that they can understand offering them an opportunity to get saved by faith in Christ Jesus.
    8. Christ had no where to lay his head, let us go out in to all the World living by faith believeing God to meet all our needs... Let the Order of Naw-Zeer Way of Christ...Christ Way of Living seek a proper spirit of detachment from temporal goods by simplifying our own material needs. Let us be mindful that according to the gospel we are stewards of the goods received for the benefits of all peoples in Christ.
    9. As members of the Order of Naw-Zeer, Way of Christ...Christ Way of Living with a gentle and courteous spirit, we accept all people as a gift of the Lord and an image of Christ. A sense of community will make us joyful and ready to place ourselves on an equal basis with all people, especially with the lowly for whom we shall strive to create conditions of life worthy of people redeemed by Christ...so we can win some to salvation in Christ Jesus.
    10. As an example the rechabites of Jeremiah 35:7 we're obedient to their forefather Jonadad son of Recab Jeremiah 35:10 We have lived in tents and have and fully obeyed everything our forefathers have commanded us...This I command you...Luke 14:33 Forsake all (Whosoever KJV) then Mark 16:15 because of Romans 10:14-17 Living by faith with what you can carry, going into all the World Preaching the Gospel of Salvation to everyone.
    11. We will serve each other, of the Order of New-Zeer, Way of Christ... Christ Way of Living esteeming a brother or sister better then one self...
    12. In our families, we shall cultivate the Nazaritenn spirit of peace, fidelity, and respect for life; striving to make it a sign to a lost and dying world that needs Christ...that there hope of eternal life is by faith in the risen Savior.
    13. We shall respect all people and preach the gospel of salvation to all that God brings into our paths.
    14. In obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ and the example of Saint Francis, we are bearers of peace... which must be built up unceasingly. We are compelled to seek out them that are lost as we travel, preaching salvation, living in community, in peace with all people, in this Way...Hodos!
    15. Our primary reason of existence is to seek out them that are lost, to Win them to Christ, Equipping them to do the work of the ministry, and to Send them out, two by two brothers with brothers, sisters with sisters, of this order to do the same...
    16. As members of the Order of Naw-Zeer Way of Christ...Christ Way of Living we covenant to draw up and live by a Rule of Life based on the Rule of this Order and falling into these disciplines: Worship, Prayer, Penitence, Work, Lifestyle, Mission, Obedience, Community. We shall always be under supervision and accountable to each other in Christ Jesus.
    17. Admission into this Order is gradually attained through a time of orientation, a period of formation of at least two years, and profession of the Rule. The entire community is engaged in this process of growth and formation. Profession by its nature is a permanent commitment. Believers in the Way of Christ, may belong to the Order of Naw-Zeer Way of Christ...Christ Way of Living. This Order is a self-governing body whose Brothers and Sisters meet daily and is governed by its professed members who meet for times of prayer and worship... in accordance with this Rule and in harmony with Jesus Christ and his Bible the Word of God.

@JesusGaveMeNewSoul Man, this fella is doing ths based on his own want and need to help others, no because so fella in a cloud told him so, fair play to him, what Ireland wants is less religion and more people helping, from every cross section of society, just because he needs to do it under the aegis of religion doesn't give him special dispensation and doesn't make him unique- he does it as a human need I would hope, not because some God told him to?

Brother Marcus, if you were ever close to the truth, why are non-Catholics just incapable of doing works of charity, missionary works of the like of Father Damian of the Lepers, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Father Rich Lung from Missionaries of the Poor in Jamaica etc.? what prevents them? Answer - their distance & fleeing from the Baptism & Holy Eucharist in the Catholic Church alone. salvationisfromthejews.com Let truth prevail. Shalom!
