  • My 860 GT has 900 SS bodywork - how to spot the differences and be able to tell that this is an 860 and not a 900.

Lovely bike. I too own a similar 860, but all the bodywork is made of hand beaten aluminium. You are right about how much fun they are to ride and they are significantly cheaper than a real desmo. Like you, I never pretend to people it is a real SS. Here in Britain you hardly ever see an SS on the road but I ride mine regularly. In fact it has just stopped raining so I shall have a ride this afternoon. Best wishes, ride fast but safely, Phil.

Yes I have a Darmah and an MHR and they are fabulous to ride as well - hard to tell the difference between the valve spring motor and the desmo motor in the real world. They both sound great, have plenty of torque, love cycling up and down through the rev range and run well. The MHR is a bit harder to start what with the ticklers and all, but the others have a 'routine' as well. The MHR seems to be geared much higher than the others too. Of them all, this one attracts the most attention, and it's of two kinds. The first are those who have seen photos of the SS in books or online and want to gush over it. The second are old Ducati guys who want to tell me it's not really an SS. I guess there's a third, the modern Ducati riders who more or less ignore it.

nice looking 860, I too went down that path with my GTS, I tried to get the SS side covers to complete the look but thats when i realized the frame tube angles are different too! now its back to naked but not with those ugly square side covers . good vid

Some brackets were made up to hold the SS side covers and it works fine. Hope yours is going well too!

Did the 860 originally have those low bars and rearsets?

No. The 860 was a "GT" model for touring. While I have all the original parts in storage, this machine has Tomaselli clipons and Tarozzi rearsets added.
