Sautee Nacoochee is a few minutes from Helen and the Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia is well worth visiting. The area around Helen is beautiful and as you enter Helen from the South, the rock and mineral shop is worth visiting. I almost forgot, when my daughter was younger they had a spider museum in Helen. We have a photo of her with a tarantula crawling on her arm.
These are awesome suggestions! I wish the spider museum was still there! I probably would have fainted on the spot with a tarantula on my arm -- but I also would have felt like I missed out if I didn't try it lol.
Helen is where my sons grew up with visits to a friends chalet. My sons feel it's too far for a weekend, and go to Blueridge, GA instead. Me? I go to Helen year round, and I always will. There is no place like it in the Southeastern US.
I’m I. Helen now and I’ve been here so many times. Thought I’d look and see what everyone else thinks the best spots are. The coaster is awesome! I do recommend you stop by the Hansel and Gretel shop for some awesome fudge, truffles and other sweet delights.
This is a really interesting video of Helen, Georgia. Helen looks like a really cool town with a lot of German influences. You did a great job describing the food, it's environment and activities there is to do there. Thank you so much for posting. You are doing an outstanding job with these videos Sam! ❤
@@SamazingTravels I went to Helen, GA last weekend. I had a good time overall, but I thought it to be to touristy. There was a lot of people, and the shops all carried about the same stuff. But the buildings were pretty cool, kind of felt like I was in Germany 😄.
Helen is a very cool town I live a few minutes away from it nestled in wine country there's vineyards all over the place people are very nice and a great place to take a family
I recommend visiting Helen for Octoberfest (Sept-Nov) at least once. Don't miss the Festhall activities. After living in the area for over 10 years now, here are some not so nice things to consider. If you plan on drinking more than ONE beer, I suggest staying in town and walking as there is only one way in and out of town and DUI checkpoints are common. Do not park illegally as you will be ticketed in a matter of minutes. This may seem strange but the chance of being a victim of a violent crime in Helen is 1 in 78 while the chance of being a victim of a violent crime in Georgia in general is 1 in 254. Watch out for pick pockets when the sidewalks are crowded. Realize that Helen is filled with cheap trinket junk stores, overpriced restaurants, and is no more like a real Bavarian town than Myrtle Beach is like Venice Italy. Realize those things and you will have a good time.
@@SlatonCribb-q1e To be honest, the only thing that you will miss is the Festhalle (closes Oct 29) where they have German bands, food and of course beer. Other than that, everything will be the same. If you wanna see what the town looks like, google; Helen Ga cams and for the Festhallel; Helen Ga. Festhalle web cam (after 6 pm when it opens).
@@SlatonCribb-q1e There are some things to remember: Don't drink and drive as the locals like check points, usually at night. Don't take adult beverages (solo cup) outside a bar. Open container in public gets you a few hundred dollar fine. Don't park illegally. Cops are everywhere and you will be ticketed. Check the weather report for the rain chance. Things to do: Winery (south end) Mini-golf (south end) Mountain roller coaster (more of a sled on wheels, seems to be very popular. Old Jail and town history, (east side street). Very Mayberry-ish. Carriage ride through town. River tubing or watching others tubing. Zip lines and hiking trails at Unicoi state park. One to two hours exploring the trinket shops. Sample (at your own caloric risk) the candy and bakery shops. Betty's country store (north end). In back, they have a deli. Fill out a card and they make the sandwich (Reuben?) as you ordered. Maybe even try the soup du jure for lunch. Appalachian trail. Drive ~ 10 miles north of Helen on 75, park at the parking spot, walk up the hill and you can now claim you walked (on) the Appalachian trail. 17 miles south of Helen is Cleveland. Nearby are corn field mazes, and Babyland General where you can watch the birth of a cabbage patch baby. Also cheaper gas, Ingles grocery, and more restaurants. Lake Burton and Moccasin state park. mountain lake ~ 30 minutes north of Helen. Just driving around for no reason in the Chattahoochee Natural forest. I would check reviews before eating anywhere in Helen. Paul's steak house on the river has great views but the service and food, especially when busy, gets poor reviews. I have had good luck at either of the Mexican restaurants, Betty's country store, and Big Daddy's restaurant. ENJOY!
To be honest, I don’t think I would come back to Helen again. We went to Helen for the Thanksgiving holiday. We checked the restaurants beforehand and almost all of them said they are open until 6,7 or 8 PM. So we didn’t even stop somewhere else thinking we will go eat at the town and experience local food. Of course it’s thanksgiving but thinking at least some of them are open. When we were actually at the town, it was literally disaster, people all over the street looking for a place to eat whatever they can find, but no restaurant is open. The signs at the restaurant say open, on google map they say they are open, to figure it out whether they are actually open or not you go from one restaurants door to another while some of the restaurants locals were having private dinner. You can see they are eating, but the door is locked. I was so pissed because it was only two of us but there were families with kids trying to find a place to eat. And all locals were saying “everything will be open tomorrow”. So starve tonight you’ll eat tomorrow. There was only one bar serving pizza and I think there was at least 30 people waiting outside because the inside area couldn’t handle more people and at some point you give up waiting. It was a total disaster and we ended up getting food from a gas station and eating at the hotel. You are a town attracting tourists on Thanksgiving, at least update your hours on google map and your signs at the door that’s the first thing you do when you close or open a restaurant. And the local saying everything will be open tomorrow like a joke… No thank you.
Sounds like you decided to go during a very important holiday season to people, you would have the same experience literally anywhere if you went during the same time. That's just the way it is. You can't expect people to give up their lives for tourists. Especially during the holiday season where everyone is coming together with their families.
My husband and I just got home last night from Helen, GA and your video is spot-on. We did everything on your top 10 in just a couple of days. Had the most wonderful time in our Rented cabin in Sautee Nacoochee which is less than 2 miles away. We loved Unicoi State Park too. Enjoyed your recap and look forward to more since I subscribed.
She said the hike up Anna Ruby isn't strenuous, I had to take a few stops. At some point you are on a straight up incline. The lower portion isn't strenuous, but you will know when they falls start going upward!!! She also didn't mention Sautee, Ga. It isn't to fat down from Hardmams Farm. It Is worth the drive and visit. They have a country store, sandwich shop, lavender cottage, candle shop and more. Further down is a covered bridge and creek, perfect for a lazy day of rock sliding, swimming, picnicking and just relaxing! Not to mention the park, our kiddos have loved playing in the small park!
Also a Hot Air balloon race takes place in Helen every year in the Spring. Race to the Atlantic. If you pick your weekend right, you can watch dozens of balloons take off the morning of the race.
I was looking for info on the baloon race and ended up here. I had no idea Helen was lime this. I've lived in Germany; didn't like it there so I don't think Helen is a place for me
And while you're there checkout A Shear Expressions! Best hairstylist/barbers in North Georgia! They also have a bridal specialist available for your destination wedding needs too! Shameless plug, yeah ok.
I'm considering a day trip to Helen from Atlanta. Great video and advice!

One of the best ways to alienate the locals is to mispronounce the name of a key attraction in the area. Unicoi is pronounced "You-Nih-Koy".
Hey Jim, I appreciate you letting me know! Thank you!

I will not spend a dime in the state of GA
Georgia may never recover from such a loss.
Without stating why your statement is worthless.
Would you like to share your reasoning so we may see how insane it is?
Why not?
