I let a thistle grow in my backyard and it is huge with at least 100 flowers that began blooming in late august. It is probably 7 ft tall and quite a number of stalks from the main base and right now it has at least 6 monarch butterflies sipping nectar from the flowers. I watered it this summer and may have even fertilized it once. Because I raise monarchs, I very much appreciate this flowering thistle. Hopefully I can get a couple more of them to grow next year. Also the bumble bees love the flowers.

I just started growing Texas Thistle, and I LOVE it! More different pollinators than any plant I have, and I have hundreds. Haven't seen Monarchs on it, but Yellow Swallowtails love it, as well as California Clearwing Moths. The bees look like they are in a frenzy, with some honeybees ganging up on a bumblebee to drive it away. Produces hundreds of flowers-- I tried deadheading, but gave up- simply too many. I'm researching all non invasive thistles to find even more I can plant.

I have a volunteer growing in some horrible gravel right beside my house. I figured it wasn't doing any harm and boy has it taken off! I'm amazed at the size in such a short time with no real care. Can't wait for the flowers to bloom!

This helped a lot. I wasn't sure if I had canada thistle but the spiny flower heads confirm we have bull thistle on the property. Perhaps thankfully or not, at least they aren't spreading via rhizomes like I feared.

Thanks a lot for this very informative video! I almost mistaken Bull Thistle for MILK Thistle. Had it not been for you, I’d never know. Thanks again

Very informative. Thank you 🙏. I didn’t know that this plant is edible or has benefits to humans health. I thought it was weeds. It’s out of control in our yard. It doesn’t matter how we try to get rid of them, they keep coming back. Thanks again for the information. We are learning every day. 😊😊

Thank you, good video, I liked it. Bull thistles and most thistles are actually edible too. Also, one thing that would have been good if mentioned in the video is that many thistle species including Bull thistles can interbreed, so that’s why sometimes it is very difficult to identify them. There are unidentifiable Thistles out there which may be Bull Thistle intermixes, because they have similar leaves as Bull thistles, but technically may be a cross breed with another species of thistle.

Interesting, I was not aware that thistles cross pollinate so easily, thank you.

Their flowers look good, even on invasive variants.

Thistles are a great pollinator plant but they sure can takeover if you just give them a toe hold.

I was trying to brush the leaf of a bull thistle, and then--like an angry yellow jacket I encounter in their nest---OUCH! It stung! Got hurt quite a bit by the prickle or thorn of that thistle.
So be careful. These thorns or prickles are as sharp as sewing needles, so be sure to stay away from even touching these parts of the thistle!!!

It makes a great pain tincture for Arthritis, good to sit in the water you can brew from the plant, it stops the bleeding and pain of hemorrhoids, the entire plant is edible, but I would only eat it in survival mode, but it’s stalk is good source of water need, stalk contains fiber, it’s got all kinds of uses.
