- Lori Holt teaches us how to make a Design Board step by step. This will help you securely transfer your fabric blocks without the worry of misplacing them. These design boards are great to streamline your quilting process, allowing you to cut multiple blocks and lay them out as you go along. After laying out your first block, stack another design board and lay out your second block. Cut and press as many blocks as you'd like, then take them all over to your sewing machine.

This popped up on my You Tube feed right when I was going to search for it! Thanks! I had been watching videos on Riley Blake and Lori was using the design board. I need several of these in my sewing room. So easy yet so helpful.
I have made these and instead of using the glue gun to stick the wadding down, I used double sided sticky tape. This was much quicker and easier than using the glue and also enabled me to stick the centre area of batting down without it being lumpy.
The glue gun was still the best method for sticking the binding down though!
A great tutorial and a great addition to the sewing room! Thank you Lori!
180353 a better method with batting and foam board is to use adhesive spray, even the repositional kind which stays in place solidly after a short while. Tons easier than glue guns.
Happybidr Of course! I'll do that next time...thank you!
Lori I love ALL of your tutorials, old or new! I go back and watch all of them! You make everything look so easy and that gives me a sense of calm to me, especially when I am frustrated with my project. For that I am most grateful. Please never take your videos away
I got a large piece of foam core board at Lowe's (could do Home Depot) that was super cheap. Took it to my quilt guild with scraps of flannel and duct tape for the back in sev color choices. Shared your idea Lori and we all made em together. Some of the ladies only put the duct tape on back and some used it like the binding you showed. Thanks for your cleverness and specially for sharing. My quilt guild thanks you too. Was lots of laughs all around
I just started watching The Fat Quarter Shop Video's and saw the design board that Kimberly was uses. I came across your video Lori and I hit the jackpot! Thanks for the instructions!
Thank you Monica! Glad you enjoyed the video and hope that you decide to make a design board!
This is one of the cutest quilting accessories I've found on TH-cam lately! Thanks for sharing; love these and plan on making a few!
I use rubber cement to anchor my batting to the core board first, then use the glue gun for the binding. Works great and doesn't add bulk. Love these boards, thank you Lori for sharing this great video.
Thanks for sharing, Beth! We hope you enjoy your design boards! They do make great gifts as well!
Reminds me of the fuzzy felt boards I played with as a child 🥰
Love this. Just bought my supplies and after reviewing this video one more time I am going to make a couple! Whoop whoop!
Wow! This is so clever! I started quilting two years ago, and started using a foam board to carry my blocks from the cutting table to the machine since they are in different rooms of my house and I was getting really confused. But they would slide around and sometimes fall off. I only started using the board because I happened to have some left over from a presentation. This, though, is brilliant! Using left over batting to cover it so the pieces don’t slide. I plan on doing this as soon as I can. It will make life just so much easier. And making multiples of them and in different sizes is wonderful. Thanks for the tip on this. I plan to watch many more of your videos.
I absolutely love this idea! I’m going to get my foam core and make some of these! What a genius idea! Thanks for sharing!!
Just finished making my design board. Great idea!!!!
This old video is so cute! To see Kimberly early on 😁 you sound so shy. Lori your boards are so sweet and practical! I'm only nervous when I use the glue gun 🔥 🥵 but I have to give it a try. Tfs.
Thank you. This was great information for me to organize my blocks in between projects
I created my own mini design boards from your blog. I love them!!!
Always wanted to make one of these…finally did! Thank you so much!
Wow that looks like a quick project that I need to do sooner rather than later. Thanks Lori for a great tutorial! Now I'm off to give this a try.
Dollar Tree has the big foam boards for $1.00!
Excellent idea! I am one of those who screw up between the equipment. I was taking pictures, but still had issues getting the blocks straight. I will make these!!!
Kimberly(my fav) this was a good project. I enjoy Lori and you so much!!
I love the idea of this size of design board. Making one today. Thanks for the great idea!
What a great gift to make and give to ur quilting friends!! Thanks Lori for the GREAT idea!! L :)
a very great idea! thanks for sharing this how- to video! I must try it!!
What a simple but brilliant idea. Shall have a go at making one later today. Thank you. Love watching all your shows
Thank you!! Can't wait to make my own design board.
Lori, you are a genius, I saw these before in one of your other videos and always wanted to know how you made them! Thanks for the great tutorial!
Craftin Kate - Thank you for the comment! We hope you try making a design board!
Fat Quarter Shop Thanks so much! Bty, do you happen to remember what measurements Lori used to cut the foam core board for the ones she made and demo'd in this video?
Thanks for this great tutorial. I've been wanting to make one and may just make a few for friends! FQS tutorials are clear and concise and I enjoy watching them all.
What a great Idea. I LOVE it. I'm redoing my quilt room, can't wait to make some and also what a great idea to also make them as gifts for my quilting friends.
I'm so excited I found this
Col - Great! So glad you are planning to make some design boards! They really are helpful, so have fun making and using them!
Thank you both for sharing a brilliant idea. So simple yet so clever.
Thank you for watching Christine, we agree, Lori is so talented. This is a super quick and easy project that will help to keep your pieces organized!
I have seen Kimberly using her board and wondered how to make one Thank you.
Thank you for sharing Lori.
Lori, I just love your tutorials! This design board is GREAT! Thank you for making a video of it. I love all your books and patterns too, you are my "quilt idol"!
I've finally found foam board online but I will go to walmart store to buy next week smile
This is fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing this with us!
Super cute quilt block design board!
I made eight last weekend. Hobby Lobby will cut foam core board for you for a small fee. Love them but now I want different sizes so back to the store. even bought a glue gun! LOL!
Thank you very much, how easy once you know how! I certainly will make some for myself and to give away .
thanks for the tutorial. I found foam core board at my $ store.
So cute and useful, I'm definitely will be making a few.
What a great idea!!!! I'll bet you can guess what I'm going to be picking up at the store today!!!! I get frustrated, at times, when piecing because ultimately I end up sewing a piece in the wrong direction. This will speed up when sewing a block with a lot of pieces. Thank you!!!!
They are so handy! Thank you for the idea!
Thank you. I will be making those boards.
I will be making these in different sizes. Thank you
Watching this again because the first thing i am doing tomorrow, after coffee, because i did exactly what Lori said. I pieced perfect, got up to press my seams...came back to add the next piece...and GUESS who went all dyslexic and had to unsew 🤪☹️
Just saw this idea on Priscilla and Chelsea’s X-Stitch TH-cam video. Thanks for sharing.🐝
Thank you so much for sharing I never knew how to make them, when I made them they did not come as nice as yours thanks so much for sharing ! 🧵✂️🤗
I have one from Fat Qtr Shop and love it! I can’t wait to make some!
You take Foam Core board found at an art supply store and you cut it down to size. Then get some batting from left over quilts and hot glue to attach it to the Foam Core Board. Take a 2 1/2" strip of fabric for the binding on your board, iron it in half so it can wrap around the edges of the foam core board. Then just hot glue the 'binding' onto the design board. It is really very simple. I hope I answered your question. If not, feel free to write us back.
What size do you usually make?
Don't forget to zig-zag stitch down the middle of the folded 2 1/2" of fabric...being sure you are catching both sides of the fabric that's folded to the center!
Love your tutorials!!
I am making a bunch of these....using repurposed (corrugated plastic sign material) road advertising signs....from when my husband does his neighborhood beautification.
I used cotton batting left over from quilt edges.
Thank you for such a wonderful project. This is so great and will help so much.
I am going to make this tonight.
VERY cool! Best idea since sliced bread!! Making a supply soon!! Thanks for video explaining it ;-)
Hi Linda! Thank you for watching. We hope you enjoy using the design boards! We love them!
Love the tutorial ! I have to get one done tomorrow ! Thanks !
Love this! Thank you for sharing.
Brilliant! Thank you Lori.
What a cool idea.
Ooh, love the duct tape, washi tape idea! I can save the fabric for strippy quilting. :)
Me too I used flannel instead of batting
It seems like every time I want to purchase one there are nonavailable. I guess I'll try and make one of my own! Looks very easy. It's crazy how much we change in a decade.
Hello baseballquilter! The design board are typically available once the fabric arrives. You can sign up to be notified.
@@FatQuarterShopTX Thank you! 😊
great Idea will have a go at making these thanks again
Who makes your yellow cutting mat? Thanks for showing us your boards!
10 years later....thanks. AND- what are those cute aprons you have on the bottles?
Hello Jane! Here is a blog tutorial beeinmybonnetco.blogspot.com/2012/03/can-you-believe-it.html
Thank you for this great idea....
A kitchen silicone cutting mat works great for the glue gun mat. The glue just pops right off
Excellent idea and so useful! Thanks for the tutorial. I've got more board now and I'm ready to make a few :-)
Thank you Tina! We hope you enjoy using your new design boards!
Brilliant. Thank you for this!
xxcheyxx12, Stay tuned, we will be posting a full binding tutorial in 2014! Be sure to subscribe to our channel!
These are great, I found that a spray of 505 is enough to hold the batting 😃
Great idea!
For some reason I am unable to get audio with this video. It starts off fine with the Fat quarter shop song and than it stops. I have tried it on numerous devices and continue to get the same results. Thanks
Great idea!!
Is the foam board supposed to be 3/8" as you stated? I am only able to find 3/16." Thanks for this helpful video!
great idea!
I suspect that you have done the math for the size board needed for various blocks. Do have favorite sizes, particularly a "travel" size?
Yes I would love to know the answer to your question, Camille. Did she ever answer this question?
I used strips cut with my pinking rotary cutter blade and it is too cute! only cut them 2", but do you think that is too big?
Molto interessante grazie del tutorial loredana
I saw Loris video somewhere awhile ago. Got my foam board at Dollar tree. Lori, 7 irons?????
From the ironing board to sewing machine I make my mistakes is right on poiny
Super!!!👍😘
What a great idea and not too hard to make either. Do you make them to sell or just for yourself.
Hi Tracy - they do make great gifts for quilty friends but we have been making them for ourselves lately. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed!
lol I would do both sides in batting n then create a binding like a book that way I could do double the patterns. create 6 of them it would be 12 squares use binder rings go a step farther put poster board between to keep them from rubbing fabric off. Even poster board to cover outer pages for travel. then you have them perfect for hand piecing too or sewing.
Fabulous
could you use flannel instead of batting.
Linda, I'm sure you could. Great way to use up an old flannel-backed tablecloth too. This also reminded me of the felt boards my Sunday School teacher used many years ago to tell a Bible story with felt characters, animals and scenery.
I just made 2 design boards. I bought Cake Boards and used scrap material. Not as good as yours, but not too bad for the first time making them. LOL I didn't see a way to add pics.
I can't wait to màke this,
So cute:)
Thanks for the pattern. Lori, may I ask if there is a pattern for the bee on the wall behind you.
Hello Kay! There is a similar block in Lori Holt's Farm Girl Vintage 2 Book available here: www.fatquartershop.com/farm-girl-vintage-2-book
Now my projects will be faster since they can be seen without shifting!
Im trying to find the heavy duty 3/8" thick foam boards that Lori Holt says she uses, that are not expensive.
Thank you i am making a few... what can i use if i get some glue on the batting.. please help
What brand of glue gun r u using I'm looking for one that has a on-off button
What's size are the 3 boards you show at the beginning?
Is it normal craft glue or a special one for fabric? Brenda Welch UK 🇬🇧🥰
Is this fold iron and fold again the right method for binding a quilt also ? I've always been confused on that, with no crafty or quilty friends I now turn to TH-cam. Can anyone help out ?
Would seam bindin work for trim around it
What type of batting? Polyester or cotton? Does it matter? Love this idea!
+grammieluli Lori Holt uses Cotton batting. Thanks for your question!
+Fat Quarter Shop has she tried flannel before???
Amei!!! 👏❣️
Is there a size you like to work with the best?
Instead of binding and all that "careful" time consuming..I use left over washi tape. No glue or ironing ..save my time for more Lori blocks and videos! Lol
