- Clayton joins James for a discussion on the state of refereeing in the Premier League and what can be to do improve standards the many believe have hit an all time low. But is it really that bad?
What do good refereeing look like?
What do we as fans actually want most, is it accuracy or is it something else?
There's discussion on if VAR has actually hindered the quality of our referees and what fans actually want from the use of technology.
And solutions are offered to what should be done to assist referees going forwards, which features discussion on releasing audio, getting refs mic'd up, the Wenger law, decision challenges, removing the 'high bar', and what can be done to make officiating attractive and rewarding.

Great listen fellas, appreciated as always 👍🏼
Surely it starts off with paying refs better? There has to be resentment from the refs to the players who are the most talented footballers in the world, getting paid 60x more than them.
Also VAR at its core undermines the on pitch ref. Like the Ben Davies / Rice one from the weekend, that gets given in the championship because it doesn’t have VAR for sure
Great pod
Great show as usual. I've always thought that getting players from the lower leagues to be referees would be a good idea, they've played the game, so they're familiar with the tricks and dark arts employed by many players. Also their level of fitness levels are far better. I really feel that the game's moved on in regards to the athleticism of the players, and the refs just haven't been able to keep up. Refs don't get substituted after 60mins either and people are far more liable to make a mistake when they're tired. The one thing above everything else though is consistency, somehow or the other they have to start making the same decision for the same offence. I can think of two decisions off the top of my head where the same offence was given on one occasion and not given in anothe. One involved Onana at Man U and the other Romero at Spurs.
Thanks gents!!
Enjoyee it, thank you.
