Acceleration doesnt matter when u talk about force/energy. if u if u shot a bullet and it had 200mph but it has flewn for 10 sec but another bullet flew for 0,5 sec but if they both weigh the same and are at 200 mph and they hit a brick Wall, the dmg will be the same, even if the bullet that has flewn for 8 sec was slowing down and the 0,5 sec one has just accelerated. Acceleration is good in combat sport just for the element of suprise.

Depending on where he learned, he either is decent or knows technique but not hoe to apply it (as is the case with many, if not most, Karate and TKD gyms in the US, sadly).
