If you start running from the tiles you see him running from you take no damage. I believe there's no timing restrictions as far as the spikes shooting out. For the green stuff in the way in either react and dodge or just cop the damage, and on the way back you shouldn't get hit if you didn't miss any ticks after entering the room. Another important note is to right click "use" the container on the waterfall and on the tree otherwise you can lose a tick or deposit a tick late allowing a crock to comp the tree before you finish the room.
