I saw it when it opened. Saw it in curved screen, 70 mm and Dolby in a huge theatre. No one knew much about the film and NO one knew what the creature looked like. People left the theatre out of breath and trembling. Great memory !

I saw this in the theater, there was nothing like it at the time. Scared the heck out me!

This movie is prime example of how they managed to make movie feel realistic with minimum of special effects.
It is a fact that yes - they did put helmets so it would look like pieces of machinery are looking one at the other and talking to one another.
Back in 1970 Mother's design was really futuristic but I like how elements of the ship that aren't computers, are still looking realistic. And partially because they were real - like all switches and buttons were literally taken off from some old bomber planes and wired so they would make some things work together.
There is a lot of documentaries on how design was achieved and it's a very interesting watch.
Also - what adds to realism is that crew of Nostromo are not professional space explorers - they are glorified truckers who have to fix constantly breaking vehicle and get an order to explore place they have no idea how to explore. Like even EVA protocol is something that they kinda know but it doesn't work 100% because - well, who reads protocol about exploring alien planets, when your ship supposed to move from one colony to the other without stopping?

Thinking about how much is going on behind the scenes leads to the suggestion that the Company (who knew the Alien existed) sent this old, tired ship and old, tired refinery, with an inferior crew to find out how the Alien works, all while writing off a ship and refinery, collecting the insurance value and not having to pay anyone (it could be decades before we know what happened to them, as indeed happened to Ripley and her daughter).
The semi-competent Dallas, his excitable and xenophilic second sure to get in trouble Kane, the intelligent but ineffectual Lambert, the two skilled dumb mechanics, an unknown quantity in Ripley, and the Company's robot, Ash.

Saw this in the cinemas when released, the earliest showings of Alien, in London, had two explosions.
One for the Nostromo, and the refinery.
Some months later, a third explosion appeared.
This film also had another ending teased in the media accompanying the film: design artwork and mentions in interviews put forward a bleak ending: Ripley programs the shuttle to make it's way home, puts Jonesy in the freezer, sees the Alien, puts on a spacesuit.
Picks up a grapnel gun, puts her had through a wrist strap, sits.
Scares the Alien out of hiding, opens the airlock, it grabs the sides of the airlock, she shoots it with the grapnel gun, it flies out the airlock, tows Ripley along behind it due to the wrist strap, the door closes, the shuttle boosts away toward Earth, Alien reels Ripley in on the line, blackout, roll credits.

Minimal effects helped build the tension and also was required because of rather low budgets. Sygourney weaver rocked it in this movie, imho

If you react to the sequel, please choose the theatrical release instead of the director's cut. You can always watch the director's cut for the additional context at a later time. But if you watch the director's cut first, you can't unring that bell. You will not get to properly experience the suspense-building punch of the theatrical release, which has far better pacing. Hope that makes sense.

If you liked this one you should definently watch The Thing (1982)
Its inspired by alien but is still its completly own thing. Its my favorite horror movie and considered another timeless classic.
Stranger things is also based on it ,so i think now is a perfect time to watch it

So glad you enjoyed this masterpiece, Ridley Scott, very big on details, even the smallest of details,..the I know in comparison low tech to the tech we now have,
but in looking at this, and every time I watch, I see the look of, similarity to airplane cockpit screens, you know showing air speed, altitude,..they probably fashioned it a little to that,..for to say it's the 70's, that is how airplane, fighter jets, cockpits looked like,..the one where its showing the moutain range on the planet,..and the set they built, really as big as you see it,..Sigourney in some doc, or interview, said she at times got lost while shooting a scene, probably the escape scenes, all that dark, smoke, fog,..I compare it to a few haunted houses I've been to, dark corridors, winding halls,..you can't see where your going, like a maze,..Sigourney probably didn't have to imagine the fear too much,..with the way this set was built, and filmed,..do keep going, so enjoyed your reaction,..Godspeed, Peace ✌

Hi, Two Reacts. I am new I randomly came across this video. I personally loved it. Good Movie. I love the Alien movies and Predators but especially Alien Vs Predator. But I love the old horror movies and stuff like this, the build time was something else back then. Now everything just rushes into the scenes. I don't know, but it's a classic in my book. In my opinion.

Hello Two Reacts, I just want to thank you for appreciating this film. (forgive my rant ) last week I watched another reactor's reaction to this film and. and long story short ( They Should Have Re-titled Their Channel " Critic To Death" And Knocked Out React" they watched the film for what felt like a judging critic view instead of someone enjoying and actually reacting they tore into the film and went as far as saying the directer was not professional and laughed at the fan following through the decades. So it's nice to find someone whose also not seen it as well as someone whose honest on their feelings toward horror films but actually has a positive reaction instead of pausing every five minutes and spend a great deal of time being a critic. so again Thank you for reacting to the film, and being in it as someone watching a film and enjoying what it has to offer to the audience instead of watching to attack it.

A Hipster is boarding the "Nostromo." What will this fellow make of this "old, long, slow-moving, character-centered, no-DFX" movie? 2:57 The Company is sending the equivalent of a freighter crew to "do science" on an unexplored planet. 5:09 The Space Jockey, a mystery for decades. 6:16 Second Officer Kane = Zapp Brannigan. 6:46 How's THAT for a jump scare? 7:02 This conversation has become iconic due to recent events. 7:45 The Facehugger, grossing out audiences for years. 8:27 Acid Blood answered the "why don't they just cut it off him?" question. 10:24 A Props dept. work of ART, made of sea animals. DFX can't match this level of reality. 11:11 Kane's last meal. 11:36 The Xenomorph, scaring audiences for decades. 12:55 Along came Jones. 14:22 Say hello to Bolaji Badejo. 17:12 In 1979, this was my "WTF? Ash ISN'T Human!"" moment. 17:58 Most didn't see this coming. 20:09 I've read that Lambert is standing in for us, the audience. 21:38 Escape route cut off, stop Destruct to gain time for Plan B. 24:21 Tonight's entree on the shuttle "Narcissus" is Steamed Xenomorph in Shell. 24:44 Correction, Char-Broiled Xenomorph. With this and the next movie, newcomer Sigourney Weaver became a major star, and, along with Linda Hamilton, an Action movie Badass. "Jennifer Lawrence"? Who is that?;)

The beauty of practical effects seems to have been lost in favor of flashier CGI. The funny thing about that is films using CGI look outdated so quickly where as those using practical effects still look good decades later.

(bonus to last post) if you want more Scifi Horror i strongly recommend the 1991 Zeiram.. That creature's face will haunt your dreams for days. That and if you ever wanted to know what would happen when crazy scientists think they can help the military by creating a Bio-weapon made from alien cells and the decayed remains of a fallen goddess Zeiram is the best film for it.

Hi Two. Alien series is my favorite movie series i watch every reaction made to it. I will give you a Like for your reaction. Sad to say doesnt happen often. I can see your definitely a "jumpy reactor:" well sorry to say havent beat "EOM reaction", He is still the number1 jumpy youtube reaction makerthe big baby. Dont tell him i said that. Haha
The crew makes bad calls because they are just futuristic truck drivers and not scientists.
You didnt find the alien goo...Excessive? The plot was definitely Horror/Suspense,
Constructive criticism. make the key scenes a little longer the ones you show are too short. Yes the art / design was Geigers and had a lot of underlying sexual content. Some reaction makes pick up on every single sexual aspect. One even said the lights look like sperm..Well shows where someones mindset is. I gave her a lot of crap for that.
The set was all real, No CGI then. So if you want to keep going along in the series my suggestion for next one is PROMETHIUS. It's like the Pre-Alien movie. Tells a lot about the company, Weyland, the androids, and the big aliens in the crashed ship plus this LV planet system. Be sure to listen to the cut , long talk between David and the Engineer. Ridley Scott said he deleted a lot because thought it was too complicated but I disagree
The sequel to this one is ALIENS. I was made like 5 years later. Its done by James Cameron so you know gonna have action in it. As for the rest of the movies in the series I dont think they are good. other fans will disagree.

I’m simply making a comment on how it’s interesting to see how these elements of the future were viewed from back then. A room filled with shiny lights on the wall and a computer named Mother with a basic natural language interface. It comes from the same place as being interested in the many ‘futuristic’ inventions of the 50s and how they compare to today.
