I just think it's amazing that his speaking voice sounds absolutely nothing like his singing voice. My God, that voice could be 30, and here he is almost 70.
Legit had to re-read the username for this comment because this is exactly what happened to me and my mom when we saw the movie! Totally bragging here, so please forgive me: a few years back I got to see a special performance of Les Mis while it was in Toronto. Ramin Karimloo was JVJ and Colm was the Bishop! I got to see Colm LIVE ON STAGE and I cried a lot. Because I'm that cool. (And they did a special Bring Him Home encore duet and I cried a lot again but so did everyone)
trentmcjiivers Completely genuine! I would have been a heap of mush if I had seen that performance. Two of the most awesome men in musical theatre today. Ramin's Phantom to me is unbeatable.
I was so happy Colm was in the film. I saw him in Toronto playing The Phantom, an experience of a lifetime I might add, and have loved his voice ever since. He was wonderful as the Bishop and yes, passed the baton to Hugh who in my opinion was robbed of an Oscar. Colm rocks !!!
Because Colm was the first, he was the best... but not because he was the first. This man can raise goosebumps in his every performance!!! Truth is actually spoken from the Producer @Cameron Mackintosh .. "that voice of God is still there".. No better role for the boss but passing the baton 😊🎭🇮🇪💚
How simplay divine... i love the Bishop's role because he sets Valjean on his road of redemption.... i was worried because i saw Colm in the role 20 years ago in London but i tell you this... i loved Hugh Jackman in the role now.... God bless all of the cast...because their portrayal was magnifico!!!!!!
I'm going the first time alone. I've decided. I'm going to sit in the very back row, against the wall. I'm going to keep my jacket up against my mouth, and whisper the words, sing the songs, or sob silently. That's the plan, anyway. When I return, several different times with friends, I don't know what I'll do. I won't stop sobbing. I know that. Won't we all have such fun crying that soul cleansing cry?
@@thomasseeger3685 - Exactly. Colm was ALW's original choice for the Phantom before Michael Crawford came on the scene. Personally Colm is both my fav Valjean and Phantom.
bigoldinosaur I so agree Colm Wilkinson is Valjean. He was the best in the movie. To me the singing not the acting or the film set was a disappointment
I can't believe he can still hit that note at the end of "Bring Him Home". That's amazing! I'm so happy he's got this important role in the film. "I have saved your soul for God." Colm was first, Jean Valjean is his; and he has given him to Hugh. Beautiful!
Oh I adore him! I would recognize his voice anywhere. When he started to sing...chills from the memory of growing up listening to his voice as Valjean. I can't wait to see the movie...yes, I live in a cave. :P
I saw Les Miserables live in the 80s in Vancouver BC Canada. I bought the Broadway recording soundtrack back then. Years later I bought the 10th Anniversary DVD which had Colm as Valjean, as well as many other amazing performers. I particularly loved the final song with the entire cast, and Valjean's from all over the world. Was truly amazing! Then when the latest movie came out, I bought the Blu Ray, and then also purchased it on TH-cam for convenience. When I saw Colm in the role of the bishop, I was so damn excited! Squee! Squee!
Out of all my friends I was the only one who saw this symbolism!!! It was such a touching tribute to Colm and his portrayal of Valjean. My favorite part is at the end of the film where Valjean has just died and sings "To love another person, is to see the face of God" and standing there in that moment was Colm as the Bishop. And as Mackintosh said, Colm is portraying God throughout the film. Such beautiful and symbolic movie making.
I did not realize until I saw this video that it was Colm Wilkinson. Shame on me! I kept thinking, "Where have I seen this bishop???" He was and always will be Valjean to me. I love the part where he and Hugh Jackman sang..."Bring it down..." Haha!
I saw it Friday and it was fantastic. I grew up watching Colm Wilkinson and the rest of the Dream Cast in the 10th anniversary and was so thrilled to see Colm again! You still hear Valjean in Colm's voice. Hugh Jackman did an excellent job as Valjean and Russel Crowe did a good job as Javert although noone can beat Phillip Quast's version of "Stars".
can't stop watching this 3 minutes... with both Valjean's. It gives me chills - I saw Wilkinson on Broadway in 1985. I think he was perfect as the bishop in 2012. When he gave the candlesticks to Jackman, he gave him also the O.K. to play Valjean.
Colm Wilkinson wasn't just the original Valjean, he was also the original Phantom of the Opera. He is a god among Broadway singers. You must hear his versions of both Les Mis and the Phantom, you will feel like you're in heaven.
@@chummanki9711 I think what Billie means is that Colm was the first person to ever play the Phantom in the 1985 Sydmonton Workshop, before Crawford and anyone else
During the movie i could hardly control myself, i was mouthing along to the words, crying several times, i was super neverous during some...unpleasant scenes and super giddy at others. When i saw Colm i gasped! my grandma thought i was insane, as did the other person next to me....
I squealed like a little girl when he walked on screen. Half the people in the theater that didn't know his importance probably thought I was crazy. I have to admit though, I kinda hoped he would walk out and hit Hugh Jackman over the head during Bring Him Home and take over :P His voice is absolutely incredible. There's only a select few that are as good as he is
This movie was absolutely amazing. It was one of the few movies I've seen in my lifetime that I would honestly go see again, multiple times. Phenomenal acting from the entire cast.
I knew before seeing the film that Colm was in it, but the ending nearly did me in. That is one edit from the musical that just made the film for anyone who loves Les Mis in stage. I always cry at the end but this, beautiful.
I did the same thing. The people around me in the theater needed to know who he really was. Wilkinson was merely masquerading as a bishop in that movie.
@John Welch, I hope u were able to see Colm on the 25th anny dvid filmed at Royal Albert Theatre. They brough back all the leads of Les Mis from the past 25 yrs. Just brought chills.
i am screaming like a little girl.. i don't know what i love about this story. i have never been in love with a movie this much and not even a musical. hey.. if i dream that one day i might be an extra in this musical, i am in serious need of help. i love the cast, i love the story, i love the musical... everything is perfect this Christmas :3
me and a friend went to see Les Miserables at the cinema. She had never heard of Colm before and when he came on as the Bishop she said to me "I didn't know Alan Sugar could sing"
I was so excited when I heard that Colm Wilkinson was going to be in this movie! While I'm sure Hugh Jackman will do an excellent job in the lead role, whenever I picture Jean Valjean, I see Colm Wilkinson and hear his voice.
If you want to know what song the "Got it's high, bring it down" is from its a group of actors in new york called Forbidden Broadway. They make a bunch of broadway song parodies from Wicked to Les Miserables. I believe the song is called God It's High. But yeah they have another one called On My Phone. A parody for On My Own.
while I would love to have great stage singers do this movie, one also has to realize the reality is that a huge production on a movie Les Mis would require star power to market it out to a general audience whom most will not have any reason to care or see a musical movie - we theater fans may love it but a normal audience don't care - and if the studio was ever gonna get a box office revenue that would justify the production cost, it meant casting well known stars more than just singers
"Pity me, change the key, bring it down, bring it dooowwwwn." So high, and he still sings it so effortlessly *_*
"I'm playing the Bishop this time because obviously I'm too old to play on barricades and be running around" LOL
Says who, Colm? 🙃
I just think it's amazing that his speaking voice sounds absolutely nothing like his singing voice. My God, that voice could be 30, and here he is almost 70.
My mother and I screamed 'IT'S COLM!' at the screen as he made his entrance. Then proceeded to cry profusely!

I love how Colm casually just sings the end of Bring Him Home so casually and easily... You are a Great of music Colm Wilkinson
When Hugh and Colm sing "Bring It Down" 😂😂😂
Oh, Colm! He seems like an extremely generous and nice person!

Colm Wilkinson. There will never be a jean Valjean better than him. He has such an amazing and unique voice! It's incredible!
Me, too. I thought, "How can he hit such high notes? How can he sing for three hours?" Pure delight to see Wilkinson again.
Colm- no! You are never too old! And I knew it was you as the bishop b/c your voice is amazing.
