I use the Dpad!! Some games are so much better with it. The buttons on the back are able to be mapped to work as other buttons (for example you can make it so one of them is the same as the A Button so you can press A while still using the sticks). The D-pad on the controller is still a good option for elderly folk like me who enjoy playing retro games, eg the Nintendo Switch Online virtual consoles. Also prefer it for menu navigation.

I'm honestly surprised you have 0 games that use the D-pad (cross thing). Almost every one of my games use it in some way, usually for a quick-access bar or minor abilities, like in Far Cry, one of the over buttons throws a rocl to distract enemies. Navigation-wise, your comments make sense, but certainly not for using the D-pad in general. Interesting. Also, the buttons on the back are probably for you to map to other buttons with specific games. I have them on a newer Xbox controller.
