    This color film is about the facilities being built to host the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, California. Copyright 1960 by Harrah's Club, a casino hotel located in downtown Reno, Nevada.
    Opening: People ski through the snow. A skier jumps off a ramp. Figure skating. Spectators watch skiing. Title: Winter Olympic Playground 1960 (:07-1:00).Skating, cross country skiing. A man skis down a hill. Olympic Flag. Statue of two men wrestling (1:01-2:06). Programs of prior Winter Olympic Games. Squaw Valley, CA in the USA is the site of the 1960 Winter Games. Reno, NV, "The Biggest Little City in the World" is forty miles away. Neon signs of Reno. Squaw Valley, CA - snow covered mountains (2:07-3:33). Three principal peaks. A man clears the snow off his car, people ski down a hill. San Francisco, CA, the organizing committee for the VIII Winter Olympics plan years in advance. Some architects sketch out buildings. They look over a map. A model of the property. Double chair lift that goes up Squaw Peak (3:34-5:41). Snow is cleared from roads. A crane digs with trucks nearby. Bulldozers and workers start to construct the Ice Arena. Wood and steel is set up and structured and the Ice Arena is being built. Speed Skating Oval. Pipe is welded together for the Speed Skating Oval. Pipe is laid down. Cooling controls for the pipes. Ice Arena is gradually taking shape. Ingenious support system for the arena's roof (5:42-8:45). Ice Arena sketches. Model of the area. Ice hockey game and figure skating takes place. Restaurants and lounges, inside is shown via sketch. Lake Tahoe area will accommodate the Olympians and attendees. Reno, NV signs for Harrah's Stateline Country Club and performers including Red Nichols and the Sons of the Pioneers. Construction continues (8:46-10:32). Model of the finished area. Olympic Village. Concrete foundations and wood being constructed. Village is being built. Men hammer nails on the wood. Snow on the ground. Sketches of the finished village. Ski championships held on the grounds prior to the Olympics (10:33-12:43). A woman readies to ski. Russians, Fins, British, Japanese, Austrians, Americans, Norwegians have been here during the skiing championships. A Polish boy representing India. Sign: Danger Blasting Area. Roads to get into Squaw Valley are being improved. Blasting takes place. A fine, multi-lane highway is shown under construction and almost complete (12:44-14:40). Navy assists with snow compaction. Snow and sawdust. Big parking lots are required. Olympic signage. Men trudge through the snow. Snow safety experts. They trigger avalanches before they occur to make things safer. An avalanche tumbles down (14:41-16:31). Experts select the best courses for the races. The terrain is looked at in the summer. In the winter it looks different covered with snow. A ramp is placed for jumps. Skiers head to the top to do test jumps. Men jump the ramp, people watch (16:32-18:28). People cheer. Ski lifts are added. Ski lift being built. Breathtaking view of the snow covered mountains (18:29-20:01). Ladies downhill slalom. Elaborate timing device. Spectators watch. Men do a slalom. Man uses a telephone (20:02-21:19). Press and media room on site. Modern data processing. Cable and wires that link the valley to the globe. Ski Patrol on hand just in case. Skiing accidents. Ski Patrol helps a fallen person. Cross country course is prepared with machinery. Men on skis then follow to make sure the snow is packed (21:20-23:16). A machine will make sure there is no hard crust and grind it up into a fine powder. A man does cross country skiing very fast. A race featuring cross country skiers. The biathlon combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. The contestant with the shortest total time wins. Missed shots result in time being added to the total. Rifles are fired at targets. Cross country skiing continues (23:17-24:50). On a rink, ice is cleaned up. Speed skating races. People watch. North American Ski Championships. Men do the ski jumps.     The 1960 Winter Olympics was held from February 18 to February 29, 1960. The Squaw Valley resort was chosen to host the Games at the 1956 meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Squaw Valley was an undeveloped resort in 1955, so the infrastructure and all of the venues were built at a cost of US$80 million between 1956 and 1960.

    Spent many days skating and skiing at Squaw. Worked there for ten years.

    Loved the music.I got to visit here in 1992 and wanted to see the skating rink but the ski lift wasn't running that day.I've seen a few other cities that had the games.It was fun to walk on the oval in Lake Placid.I got to meet Eric Heiden at a bike race a few months later in Calif.

    I was there in 1960...at five years old. I don’t remember much, but later I skated at the arena and skied while growing up in King’s Beach.

      That is pretty cool. I wasn't born until 1966 but my parents were in Reno at the time. Unfortunately they didn't get a chance to go. My Dad was working remotely and my Mom was pregnant with my brother. I always regret we moved from there before I was born to San Francisco. San Francisco was great but we never got into snow sports and I would have loved to visit.

      The oval is now a parking lot.The only thing left is the ski lifts.
