    I'm an American, Pacific Northwest state of Oregon. I am always astounded that a country smaller than my home state can have as many distinct accents as it does, or that there are such strong prejudices against certain ones. What a trip! For what it's worth, you and your Dad and Mom sound just great to me. I can understand everything you say and it flows nice. By contrast, I love a Scottish accent, but for real? • @1973stefanp
    @1973stefanp ปีที่แล้ว

    Re the short 'a' sound, it depends on your background (I don't want to say class, but it's related) as well as what side of the city you live. So, many people I know will use a mixture of short and long 'a' sounds (the 'trap-bath' split) depending on the words. For example, I say laughter as in "larrrf" not "laff". I also pronounce garage as "gararrge" not "garridge" as others do. I live 4 miles south-west of Birmingham, so we verge on a Worcester accent that also can sound slightly Black country or even Welsh. My mother's family live 4miles outside Birmingham but the north east side, and they have a more typically 'Brummie' accent that is different to ours. Some of my uncles who have always lived that side almost have a 'country' accent, so when they say "last week" they use the long 'a' , so "larst" but then shorten week to "wik" so last week = larst wik. (which bizarrely is almost like the Blackcountry way, but that's the other side of the city to them!) What I think is obvious, though, is the typical Brummie accent people see on TV is not really true & representative of the variety of accents across the city.

    As a brummie most people will pronounce water like 'warta' and going like 'goin' we tend to leave out the endings of words such as 'are you kiddin?' Or 'are you jokin' and personally I always add an 'ah' sound on the end of my words such as 'oh my god ah' or 'shut up ah' if that makes any sense😂also 'leave me alone ah' I have quite a strong brummie accent but I personally like it

    0:24 I'm a non anglophone who never lived in an anglophone country and I don't believe this accent is ugly at all. So, yes; any opinion is subjective, be that positive or negative. As a foreigner the differences in english accents from england to me are very slight, and therefore to me an english person from London, another one from Birmingham and another one from Manchester all sound more or less the same. To me they have the "english accent" from england, although english people say that this doesn't exist. But for a foreigner it does exist, because by just hearing you we can discern that you're not americans, australians, irish or scotts but english (I don't know what the welsh accent sounds like). Where from England is this person? From anywhere, but just from England.

    I was born and bred in Bromwicham, but moved to California 38 yrs. ago.
    It always amused me how Americans said they loved my accent.
    Nowadays I can't even put it on when I want to.
    I have to say that I've not heard anyone in Bromwicham lately that spoke anything like as broad as my grandparents' generation from the 1890s. The current generation of youngsters are too exposed to the speech from other areas, via travel and the media.
    In the 19th century the working class rarely travelled around, so accents were re-enforced.
    I don't think I ever heard my great aunt ever used the word "she", it was always "her", as in "Her was gooin down the shops", "Her woren't too busy," "Her give me ten bob."

I adore the family and their show, but in the years that I've watched them, I have to admit I understand about 30 or 40 percent of what they are saying, the rest is lost. But as I say, I love them and the show so I'll keep watching! Maybe one day it will all magically sink in! Thanks for the video.

      I am from Venezuela and when I was learning English, one of my teachers lived in Birmingham.(he ain't Brummie though) He was from Cape Verde and at first I taught he was pronouncing English wrongly. Afterwards I realised the existence of the Brummie accent by listening the Barclays premier League on BBC world service on Saturdays and there where a lot of reporters and comentators from the west midlands. Then I was wrongly associating the Brummie accent with Aussie accent until I watched the Peaky Blinders. (Of course plenty of the actors ain't Brummie but, I perceived the difference between Brummie, Yam Yam and Aussie. Far different. And if people in the UK doesn't like the brummie accent, well, I "luv" for 3 reasons (short A, intonation and the rothic R " short A and rothic R because of Spanish language and intonation because sounds nice. RP is comercial English (to be sold English for us English learners) but the brummie accent I really love it.

      o_O The only good reason to not watch Game of Thrones is if there's too much real life going on to be addicted to a TV show. It's the best TV show ever in history. I think that because every single person who's watched it on my recommendation (and I've told about 100 people because many of them are my clients), has fell in love with it. Some of them even gift me small things to thank me for the introduction.
      Question to Leah then: Which is the northern accent which Snow and the Starks speak?

    • @hbsblkk3842

Such as ending 'g' words with a 'k' which is not true, yam yam is much closer to that & a lot of the time you sounded Scouse (like peaky blinders). I feel like brummie is much more controlled than yam yam & yam yam is a lot more fluctuating in pitch & tone.

Also another obscure question ; the accent that one hears in the opening speaking part of The Move’s song. ‘Cherry blossom clinic’, is that a classic brumbies accent too or perhaps from another part of the midlands ? I’d be most interested to hear what people have to say. Milo

I by the way am Canadian with Italian roots so I know a thing or 2 about wacky dialects and their rules... however I wanted to ask you which English accent is the one that replaces the "TH" sound with "F" as in wif instead of with?

    • @ThoseTwoBrits1
      @ThoseTwoBrits1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Frank! I love my shirt too! What an interesting mix! To be honest it's quite a popular feature of speech and isn't confined to just one area. But it's very popular in London accents - they tend to replace "th" with 'f' or 'v' (so it would actually be pronounced 'wiv' not 'wif', but words like 'through' would be pronounced as 'froo'). But you will be able to find that feature in lots of working-class communities as it's more of a class-feature rather than a geographical one!

    Well done. You've definitely grasped the pronunciation of certain letters that give Brummies the unique sound. Many people also say 'mom' instead of 'mum'(it's just what we do).
    Too many ignorant people are quick to slag us off without actually considering what we've brought to the world. Sadly, Birmingham massively undersells itself - we've got miles of canals, lovely parks, museums, Sarehole Mill and SO much more.
    Places like Edgbaston, Bournville, Moseley, Harborne and Sutton Coldfield are in fact some of nicest places in Britain to live. If only people would care to see our city and our droll/down-to-earth attitude to life. Their loss I suppose...
