- From the 1937 fim "Glamorous Night".
A rare treat, this, for Ivor Novello fans - Mary Ellis reprises her 1935 stage success "Glamorous Night" in this 1937 film., singing the title song and a version of "Fold YOur Wings" from the same show.
Miss Ellis was born in New York in 1897. She created the role of Suor Genovieffa in Puccini's "Suor Angelica" at the Metropolitan Opera in 1918, and later made her name starring as Rose-Marie La Flamme in the original Broadway production of Rudolf Friml's Rose-Marie in 1924 in which she introduced "The Indian Love Call".
She settled in London in 1930 where, as well as starring in Jerome Kern's "Music In The Air" (1933), she also was the heroine of three Ivor Novello operettas, "Glamorous Night" (1935), "The Dancing Years" (1939), and "Arc de Triomphe" (1943). Miss Ellis died aged 105 in 2003
I knew Ms. Ellis when she was in her late 90s - she was a lovely lady!
Mary Ellis was my Godmother and I remember going to Ivor Novellos' House in the country with my parents when I was a child. He played the piano and she sang. Quite emotional to see her singing on the Tube
😮 wow !!
Penelope - I SO envy you! :-)
Lucky you.
I have only just discovered Ivor Novello what an absolutely fascinating guy he was and so talented x
Agreed. Mary Ellis told me he was a wonderful man! She loved talking about him. Of course he wrote a Musical specially for her.
Thank you so much..wonderful memories of my grandparents house. This was a favourite of theirs.
Oh, to have lived in that era. Ivor gave the world the priceless treasure of all his music. I have the CDs of 'Glamourous Night' and 'The Dancing Years' but this is a valued treat. Thank you
Mary Ellis is my great great great auntie on my mother's side
Lucky you, do you know what has happened to her music archives? Were those donated? Are they accessible somewhere? Thank you!
Mary lived till she was 105! sang with Carouso! what a lady! and such a bright clear voice! No wonder Ivor got her to sing for him! She was one of the great sopranos!
I got to know Ms. Ellis a little during her 90s - she was very kind and friendly to me - a great and lovely lady!
Did you have Welsh ancestors? Ellis is usually a Welsh surname.
do u look like her?
Lovely music. Great voice, real singing.
I wish someone would upload the whole movie...
Brilliant voice
Wow !
Very nice....
She also appeared twice in the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series, aged 96 & 97.
in 2003 & 2004.
Actually it was in 1993 and 1994; she died in 2003 with 105 years old
Ah yes! Trevor Jones I had forgotten. Thank you.
How sad he is only really a bit part in Gosford Park to many people, he was in his own way as talented as Coward.
Coward was a masterful writer, but Ivor,s music is so much more superior! Every musical play from 1935-52 was studded with wonderful melodies and songs! Cowards famous songs are few in comparison.
Penelope Wigram How lucky you are to have had that experience.
I got to know Ms. Ellis a little during her 90s - I regret SO much not asking her more about Ivor than I did...
Does anyone know anything about Dunstan Hart who duetted with her in 'The Dancing Years'? He was a GREAT Singer!
I'm also looking for information on Dunstan Hart.
@@michaelconnor8317 That's interesting; there seems to be very little curiosity about this wonderful Singer - he had a tremendous voice which I simply love, (can’t think why Ivor never used him more) But as far I can make out, he made only the one 'official' recording, which seems incredible to me... I have many regrets, since I knew Mary Ellis late in her life - but never thought to ask her about him can you believe! She would have told me loads - I could kick myself, she always delighted to talk of her past career - and so enthusiastic. She lived to 105!!
@@michaelconnor8317 That's him! Photos and autographs are rare too! I have several that I have managed to obtain over the years. I was disappointed he did not appear in the movie 'The Dancing Years' - but then neither did Mary Ellis, or many other cast members, which was a shame...
@@nintendy My wife's aunty is Christine King, Nee Hart, her father is Nicholas James Dunstan Hart (no longer with us) his father was Edward Dunstan Hart. we are going to a wedding on the 4th of November to one of Edward Dunstan's great Granddaughters. it would be nice to know if there is any photos of him. if you have any photos of him would you be able to forward them on email??
@@michaelconnor8317 Sounds exciting! I'll have to have a look - you’ve no idea just how much stuff I have/collect and sort through... Also; my partner is in hospital with Terminal Cancer - and has just gone down with Covid, and so time is pretty much taken up - but I’ll see what I can do. I must have at least four or five (two may be the same - not sure till I look) I’m sure all of them are signed. (and possibly dated too)
Don't forget Ivor Novello music awards ??
It is hard to imagine that during those times, Hitler was preparing for war.
Who is the tenor?
Welsh tenor Trefor Jones, who was with Mary Ellis in the original stage production of "Glamorous Night".
