I made a camel bone nut. Dyed it red to match the body. Used the idea of making a "T" shape that drops down and fits into the truss rod opening... Trying to figure for string spacing having the same space distance between each string and placement to the neck edge. Seems like it will take some in place measuring. Doing this on a guitar WITHOUT a straight string pull...thinking of making a "String Butler" type of truss rod cover ? Good ideas and instruction here in the video thank you. My dream is to build a "math" Guitar from scratch some day. Using rounded off correlating math for all the dimensions on everything...
Great info. Shaped my first nut blank following a lot of your info. I have a harmonic that rings out on the open A. I've muted behind the nut going to the tuners and that didn't stop it. Any ideas? I'm guessing something with the angle of the slot? Depth seems good. Top of the nut is pretty much level with the top of the string. I only really hear it playing the guitar unplugged.
Without seeing the guitar, I can only guess. I would check the width of the slot. Too much contact between the string and the side walls of the slot can produce unexpected harmonics. Try slightly widening the slot by angling the file side to side as you move it back and forth. Try to aim the file's teeth at the side walls of the slot, but don't file into the bottom of the slot or you'll make it deeper. You just want to make the slot wider as it reaches the top of the nut. Sort of like a V shape when viewed from the front or back. Also, the slots should be angled to match the angle of the string from the nut's face toward the tuners. The only point of contact between the string and the nut should be a tiny patch where the bottom of the string touches the nut at the face before heading to the bridge. Hope this helps.
Thx for all the details, I need a shirt or something soon. 😂 If you don't mind my asking, how much material do you leave on the point inside the slots that hold the string, on the bridge side of the nut? Do you make a very small gradual curve up to that point then leave a small area to keep the strings from grinding into the bone or breaking at the nut? Thanks for you time!!
I prefer to shape the nut before finishing, so I can sand it flush with the sides of the neck and even finish with it on. Then , after finishing I make the slots and shape the upper side of the nut.
From your description of the cow femur bone, it doesn’t sound like it has bee defatted. If you want to determine if it had been defatted or not, try holding a piece of it over a candle flame. If there is fat in it it will burn. If no fat it will only char. To remove the fat you can soak it in naphtha.
@@HighlineGuitars Roger that, I'll remember that I need to turn the volume down for a 6 second intro, then turn it back up, so I don't cause a disturbance. Yeah, unsubscribing after 3 years of following.
Congratulations for a new episode, thanks Chris. I really enjoy each chapter.
Glad you enjoy it!

That's exactly what I was doing when the video came out 😊 Thanks for the useful tips! Definitely going to use them.
Glad it was helpful!

Yes.
How long would you say it takes you on average to make a nut? Obviously a beginner will take a lot longer, but I want to make sure I'm not rushing it.
About 2 hours.
How do we price our guitars?
Total cost of the parts and materials plus labor.
Chris what’s your turn around time for a complete custom build & where do i enquire
Sorry, I don’t accept custom commissions anymore accept for super famous people with extremely deep pockets or the ability to bring me notoriety.
I should have asked from my main account. But thank you for your time.

During my entire life I have been try to adjusting nuts. Their are just too many of them and not enough hours in the day. Semper Fi Chris.
Sometime you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't!

The volume on your intro is absurdly loud, way above the volume of the rest of the video.
I’m a huge fan of absurdly loud.
