    • @Happyheart146
      @Happyheart146 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Better than any Welsh choir.
      Btw, these are actual Zulus, the great grandson of the king who fought the battle, plays his ancestor (I think he's the one leading the song here) I would dearly love to know what they sing about.
      To me, it is their last stand. The end of time.
      The director Cy, immortalised these people here. Historically of huge importance and it has touched me deeper than any music I have ever heard.

  • @Hardrada88
    @Hardrada88 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    The zulu that fought at rorkes drift were from the reserve units who were posted behind the lines at isandlwana. They numbered about 4,000 vs 136 British. Traditionally the zulu reserve sat with their backs turned, facing away from battle so as not to see the result. They arrived at the drift about 1pm 500 of them being seen by English posted on a hill. They then fought mostly English men from the industrial slums of Britain. Birmingham, london, liverpool etc. Not welshmen. For 12 hours, including at night, both sides contested a spit of ground hardly worth dying over. For the zulu it was a chance to 'wash their spears' after sitting and waiting at Isandlwana, a quick nip over the river and for those younger men, a chance to esrn some renown, the headring and maybe the iziqu. For the British it was pure survival (chelmsford later condemned the men who received medals saying it was wrong to reward to those who "hid like rats in holes and buildings and only tried to save their skins" but the zulu had ran 30 odd miles and fought at a battle already. Isandlwana was a zulu victory but the losses hurt them. They fought bravely, it was a British defeat after the forces (under Chelmsford) were split in two (a rule of war Chelmsford broke as he underestimatedhis foe). No.3 column being wiped out almost to a man over 1500 men with less than 50 escaping to warn rorkes drift. The battle at Isandlwana lasted about an hour. Those at rourkes drift were sick, a couple engineers, supply corps, medical, some men of the 2/24th etc. A reserve collective. Two reserve regiments met there, fought, died and retired. The zulu were (and are) the bravest most courageous people to this day. They were the most effective fighting force in history then rivalling both France and Great Britain in combat but they sought every opportunity not to war with them. Shaka was a brutal genius. Cruel, merciless but a genius who created an empire from a minority in a harsh land. The impi was intricate, well made and well trained fighting up until 1910 with various revolts. A proud people and rightly so. I do love them, I love Africa. It really is a home away from home and they will always be family and my brothers & sisters. The zulu have a saying 'to be under one's shield', to say, we will always defend them and Africa.

    I think its a fabulous film, documenting the immense bravery on BOTH sides at the Battle of Rorke's Drift (1879) A battle I never would have learned about to this day, save for this film which seems to be the sole testament, publicly of this engagement.
    Forgive me, but this chant here, was it before the start of the fighting, or were the Zulu warriors salulting the bravery of the men at the end of the battle.
    Every time the Zulu warriors returned i was reminded of the lines half a league, half a league, half a league onwards. Into the Valley of Death rode the 600
    The Charge of the Light Brigade, I know. But it was just the way the Zulus kept returning, and returning. And the beleaguered Welsh troops, chronically under manned, surely this time the Zulu would beat them, but no. Nothing DIVINE about this result. Just sheer will, guts and determination, and a never, NEVER say die attitude.
    Michael Caine was discovered by Stanley Baker (the commanding officer in the film), and he asked that Caine be given the part he played. Zulu was his film debut.

    Taking South Africa or South Alkeballon was no easy task because different tribes had been at war with each other and,for century s before the middle passage;Africa was named after a Roman General who conquered Alkeballon the contitent it was named after himself. The man's name was Scopio Africancus . So the word African is a Latin name which means land of the blacks. It's Arabic counter part is called Alkeballon.

    And the brave British.

  • @Hardrada88
    @Hardrada88 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The Zulu first approached RD from the rear of the hospital and storehouse. The fire being so intense they dropped to ground, they swing left around the hospital to the wall. So far the zulu rifle fire has been a nuisance but Private Thomas Cole(colle) has an attack of nerves possibly, claustrophobia, runs outside and is shot in the head. The bullet then smashes the nose of Private James bushe holding the door. The hospital is apart from other areas defended as was only defended by Private soldiers, no officers were present and the only NCO (sgt maxfield) was delirious with fever and therefore doesn't count. One of the only times in British history were Privates held a sector without officers. The zulu attack again and again actually jumping the mealie wall. Bromheads bayonet charge puts pay to this but through the evening the same attack continues. Back to the hospital, the zulu attack the Western room held by John and Joseph Williams, Private horrigan and two sick patients were also in the room but the only door lead to the Iklwa and death so Horrigan takes a pick and starts making a hole in the adjoining wall whilst Privates William & William hold off the attack with bayonet. One of the zulu grabs Joseph Williams rifle, drags him through the door and he's assigied. Hook alongside horrigan ferries out the patients through the hole to the next room. The hospital is now ablaze and they see no alternative than to abandon it through a window. Dropping the patients through even as the zulu attack from two sides. Hook is shot through the shoulder, Bromhead asks him "old boy, you are hit?" Hook says "I am sir" Bromhead hands him his revolver and together with the surviving Williams they usher the patients out. Private John conolly, recovering from a dislocated knee, is seen by John Williams to be struggling through the smoke and still fighting zulu through the doorway. He leaps in and carries him out, dislocating his knee again in the process (yowch) meanwhile a flung assegi hits Hooks helmet and slices his forehead. He helps Williams with Conolly. Private John waters and William beckett are cornered in the corridor and take shelter in a cupboard. Beckett was seen by zulu who stabbed him in the stomach, he staggered off into the dark to die alone. John waters tears out into the night past the storehouse and hides between the zulu fallen. Private Roberts and William Jones are now joined by Hook and Allen in defending the last wing of the hospital handling patients through a window. Cpl William Allen and private Fred hitch see their plight and rush to help from the hospital despite both being shot through arm and neck. Robert Jones was wounded in the abdomen by an assegi but is okay, they pass the sick out one by one all the time fighting back the zulu attack. Meanwhile the zulu are still taking ground at the storehouse the fire being too great. They swing right past the cattle kraal to face the wall. Trooper Sidney hunter of the NMP exits the hospital, disoriented he hesitates, is shot and assigied in turn. Hook later stated "his blood and brains covered my face but we put away the zulu that killed him". Its night now, the blaze from the hospital illuminates the field and the attacks lessen althought "usuthu!" Echoes again and on the warriors come, attacking both front and side wall simultaneously. Throughout the night attacks are made by the brave zulu and held off by the brave British. By dawn it seems to be over. One zulu by the cookhouse stands, fires and strides off. Waters emerges from his hiding spot and hoofs it into the hospital. The rest slowly left throughout the night realising that Chelmsfords column, camped at isandlwana, would head down the Drift. Help also from Helpmaaker with mounted infantry riding towards to the Drift are spied about 7am. Cheers went up and RD was relieved. Patrols were sent out. Hook almost comes unstuck, a zulu feigning death tries to stab him. He bayonets the zulu, another gets up, throws his assegi but runs into the thorns and vanishes. Trooper Lugg of the NMP is attacked by a zulu, a married fighter with the headring, Lugg kills the zulu with a knife. At 12o'clock a large body of zulu was seen by the river, chard recalled the patrols but the zulu were heading back around isandlwana the 'mass' was the rearguard of the regiments. It was over. Isandlwana and RD didn't need to happen at all, it was a stupid series of events which cost brave men their lives. Zulu and British, they were courageous, brave and true to themselves in that moment. Zulu accounts at isandlwana hold truth to this when they said "no red soldier ran, they stood back to back and swung their guns as clubs. We didnt want to attack" and "an induna with a spear above his head came running down. They shouted and laughed and we fought". We must never forget our history nor be ashamed of it, together we remember, honour and make the future better. Together we are stronger and undefeatable.

    Probably not intentional at all, but the way the leader's(?) pitch shifts starting at 1:17 reminds me of the "Summon all at Cambria's call" part of the Men of Harlech song the Welsh later sing. Since the singing battle never actually took place, I think this is a great use of artistic license to create a good parallel between the Zulu and the Welsh; kindred spirits almost.
