*Goat Fence test* - toss some water at your fence, if the water makes it through the other side of the fence then so can your goats. And your goat fence has failed. That is all. 👍🏼😉🤣🤣🤣

I have Nubian and Toggenburg dairy goats and they are a completely different animal than meat goats. No problems with fences, getting out. Easy to be around, very personable and we get lovely sweet creamy milk to drink and make cheese.

I'm glad you said this. I was shocked he had such a bad experience with goats, because I grew up on a farm with goats, and we never had ANY of that happen. So I was confused until I read this comment. We had nubians. It makes sense now. Nubians are my favorite type of goat because they're friendly and smart and their milk tastes amazing. Also they didn't have horns, so that probably kept them from getting hung up on things.

We had goats and chickens when we first started with our homestead 10 years ago. Now have St. Croix Dorper cross meat Hair Sheep.
We love our sheep extremely hearty animals. In the last 3 years only had to help one ewe during lambing. Whereas had tons of issues with kidding from our goats.
Our sheep are poled (no horns) so not needing to pull animal heads out of fences. Was constantly pulling the goat heads out of the fence.
Worming: St. Croix are super resilient to parasites. We have St. Croix ewes and a Dorper Ram. We still get super high parasite resistance with lambs. Goats need to constantly be wormed or the die.
Lambing VS Kidding: Our St. Croix Hair Sheep will usually lamb singles the first time and then doubles or triplets there after. Goats are a crap shoot. Could be singles could be doubles.
If a person is looking to invest in sheep would say look at hair sheep. Not wool. Wool sheep also get parasites up their bums which is why many farmers choose to dag them (cut their tails off) because of their wool and their excrement builds up and increase the chances of an anal parasite. Hair sheep don't have this issue.
Totally agree with you on sheep! Love them and they are much better than goats.

I'm thinking of getting some St. Croix or some Jacob sheep. Love the Jacob, the thought of selling fleeces to hand-weavers. Did wonder if you have your terms confused. I thought that sheep have their tails *docked* which is usually done with elastic while still nursing, within a few days of being born. And that shepherds *dag* their sheep near lambing, which is to mean that they shave their bum region to get rid of accumulated waste, tangles, vegetable matter, and to enable the lambs easier access to the teats. Are you sure of your terminology? They do dock tails because of pests depending on the breed and the region of earth. I don't think it's an 'Anal parasite" so much as fly-strike, which is flies laying eggs in feces in the wool, and then the maggots burrow into the flesh under the wool and eat the animal alive.
      Just curious.
Very keen on the idea of getting sheep though. For their personalities.

Good to know. My husband and I are very new to everything. N2T, new to the Law, eating, etc. all while looking to get out of the city. You and your wife's videos are so encouraging and easy to digest. We recently bought wheat berries to grind to make our own bread (any suggestions/recipes?). My husband has struggled with high blood pressure that meds and a modern "medical" suggested diet has not corrected. So, after watching your video where you explained and quoted Psalm 104:15 in regards to bread, a light went off. Man, are we struggling to get it right, but trying our best. Anyways, thanks to your wife and you for all you do to share your wisdom. Greatly appreciated.

You are so right! I loved having goats, but not their dancing on the hoods and tops of the cars or trucks. And if there was a tree or plant we wanted to live, they were the first thing the goats would go for if they got out. We learned to fence in anything we needed to protect from the them. We dehorned our goats so never had any kill themselves, thankfully. There was 80 acres for them to roam and you are right, when we first moved there you could hardly travel or see through it. After a few years it was clear as far as the goats could reach. Never had any experience with sheep. At the time we had goats I didn't know there were sheep you could milk, or that hair sheep existed. I never wanted to deal with wool or shearing.

Thanks... from a 'new' homesteader ha ha our nubian was constant trouble so we traded for a boer mix who is less, but they are more interested in cardboard when they are not eating hay/alfalfa.... so they like it when ups and fed ex show up. They spend the rest of the time trying to break into our greenhouse. My friends that have goat successfully fenced have very well built fences and keep the goats fed. I think I see goat tacos in our future and sheep as the new farm animal.

haha. I have Nigerians, and they are perfectly sweet an wonderful little boogers. Give the BEST milk too! Never have escaping issues, or suicidal issues. They are also MUCH smarter than my sheep, who don't seem to have 2 brain cells between them.
Now, my ram, on the other hand, is a butt-head, and is CONSTANTLY testing me and pushing his boundaries. Had to throw his butt on the ground and sit on him yet again yesterday. None of my goats give me the kind of issues he does.

By the end of 2020 us teachers were both blessed (you put up with *my* child every day, and I had no idea how hard it was!) and then reviled (What do you mean you want it to be *safe* before you take my kid off my hands and deal with him/her daily??? Do you *know* what it is like to put up with them day after day? I'm going to go crazy if you don't start teaching again!)

I was actually thinking of doing that. We bought a five acre lot where the underbrush is all cleared out and in spring it looks park like, with green grass and nicely trimmed trees. Then we bought the neighboring five acre parcel that had never been developed, and the difference in the two areas is night-and-day. I want sheep, and have been considering some of the heritage breeds that are more prone to eating weeds like St. Croix or Jacob sheep. But starting to think that we might start with a few goats, or even see if, once we fence it in, we might provide some "free pasture" to a herd of goats for a while.

Planning to get some goats in the future, living in a dry region in Northern California with decades behind on tending the land, the family needs help taking care of the brush that has gotten out of control. Lately in certain regions the forest fires have gotten out of control because of the lack of care in maintaining the control of brush. Been looking into getting goats that are at least kid friendly yet able to eat a lot (we've got a large property) and possibly start a cheese business if all goes well. Not certain if we'd keep goats for 10+ years, but enough to clear the brush.
It's funny cause at the same time the neighbors on our property were thinking of getting sheep for the light grazing of weeds (we unfortunately have a lot of that too.) They've had experience with taking care of two goats, easier to manage than some of the stories I've heard of other goat owners, but decided to go with sheep this time around. Don't know if I want to dedicate a certain time of the year to shear sheep though, but I'm sure they would also contribute to the property.

  • @bradsimpson8724

I have both, pastured together(Nubian milk nannies and St. Croix meat ewe/lamb pairs). I have extremely strong fencing, a pair of very capable herding dogs, and, most importantly, stuff to keep the goats engaged. We graze our livestock rotationally, and every paddock has some pretty resilient wild brush, and some giant landscaping boulders from an old quarry. By having a bunch of different vegetation to browse on, rocks to climb and jump on, and a couple of dogs to be wary of, we've never had an issue with goats. However, we do introduce them in a training/quarantine pen, which is meant to teach them about electric fencing while we evaluate their well-being for the first little while. As a result, they're pretty damn respectful of that hot wire.
It could be that we just got really lucky, but our goats have been relatively problem-free.

  • @LadyLithias
    @LadyLithias 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Right now my father (he's 80, owns the land) is debating me as to whether we want goats or sheep on our 10 acres of mixed pine/juniper forest and meadow. I keep telling him goats are much harder to have than sheep, and some breeds of sheep are more keen on weed control than others (like the Jacob sheep). He keeps worrying that they'll escape and we'll never catch them (the sheep) and that goats would be easier. I try to tell him that he's got it backwards.
He worries because he doesn't want escaping sheep unwilling to be caught. I tell him that if you teach sheep to come at the sounds of treats rattling in a bucket, you'll likely never have to worry about re-acquiring missing sheep.
I've searched "sheep versus goats" on TH-cam and this was the top video suggestion.

Regardless of your feeding regimen, once their 'forage' is minimal they start in on your trees' bark. Nothing like a dead/girdled fruit or shade tree, (or ten), to prompt the craigslist ad. JMHO.

We have raised goats before and cannot wait to get some more again. We are not keen on sheep or lamb meat. What we have learned from experience is that if you have just females in a group with higher areas near the center away from the fence, there are not many issues with them getting out. Rotating pasture helps as well as they quickly get bored. The male goats, on the other hand, are a pain, yes and if the male gets out: the females follow.

I'm struggling with this very question. I've wanted Nigerian goats my whole life. I'm finally getting to the place where I can start a small herd. But then I thought I might rather sheep because of the wool. I do a lot of knitting and I thought it'd be nice to process my own wool to make yarn. So I watch your video and I'm thinking, maybe sheep is the right choice....but then I read the comments and I'm like...aggh, maybe I should go with what I've always wanted. Ugh. Aside from the battle of wills in raising unruly goats. I've heard that sheep need to be sheared at least once a year. Does that cost money? Do you do that yourselves or do you pay for that service? I had a friend with a sheep farm in Ohio, he paid someone to shear his sheep so he always had meat, but gave all the wool in exchange for the shearing. So the question becomes, can you raise sheep at a cost that brings value to the meat you harvest? Or can you make a profit selling adult sheep? I think If one can harvest the wool and the meat there would be a benefit, but that requires shearing skills i guess. Anyone have experience with this?

Thank you 😂 know I can understand a little bit better the parable of the separation of the sheep and goats. The sheep did what His Master wanted, what a beautiful thing. God bless you.
    Matthew 25
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, accompanied by all the angels, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be assembled before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates sheep from goats. 33 The ‘sheep’ he will place at his right hand and the ‘goats’ at his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you whom my Father has blessed, take your inheritance, the Kingdom prepared for you from the founding of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you made me your guest, 36 I needed clothes and you provided them, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37 Then the people who have done what God wants will reply, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and make you our guest, or needing clothes and provide them? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison, and visit you?’ 40 The King will say to them, ‘Yes! I tell you that whenever you did these things for one of the least important of these brothers of mine, you did them for me!’
41 “Then he will also speak to those on his left, saying, ‘Get away from me, you who are cursed! Go off into the fire prepared for the Adversary and his angels! 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 a stranger and you did not welcome me, needing clothes and you did not give them to me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they too will reply, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, thirsty, a stranger, needing clothes, sick or in prison, and not take care of you?’ 45 And he will answer them, ‘Yes! I tell you that whenever you refused to do it for the least important of these people, you refused to do it for me!’ 46 They will go off to eternal punishment, but those who have done what God wants will go to eternal life.”

Sheep's milk will produce two times as much cheese, for the same amount of milk compared to goat's and cow's milk. This is because it has twice the amount of solids in it. On the other hand, sheep tend to produce less milk per day than a bigger dairy goat.

My personal experience is after you get the goats into their routine, AND they trust you. Not only this dude keeps me from getting mastitis and brings me treats, but they see you defending them and help them when things go wrong and save them from DEATH while they are staring death in the face. Then. ONLY then will they trust you and stay where you put them. And that trust will last for generations of goats. Then you only have to worry about bringing new blood into the herd.

Well yes sheep are easier to keep- but what benefits do they offer other than meat? And sheep have to be "kept" safe at all times bcs of predators...so i disagree with this vid bcs he never mentioned the benefits of sheep & was just clearly "anti" goats..... my uncle always had sheep & goats- said they both were a pain for different reasons- sheep for meat/ goats for milk- also he had a 5' hurricane fence around them & kept their horns cut👍 they had plenty of trees to ram & he put a couple of old crap cars with no motors out back for them to crawl on- had their hay in like a giant looking wood bird feeder so they couldn't get in it or on it & only could pull the hay from the narrow slit- it all can be done with not that much aggravation -- i love this channel but i just disagree... 🙂 God Bless
