    I have been using Sparex 2 with a baking soda bath to neutralize. I understand that I can save my pickle solution for a long time, but what about my baking-soda water? During Covid lockdown, we’re reducing trips to the grocery store. I’m out of baking soda, but still have the soda/water mixture I used 4 days ago. Will it still neutralize the pickle on my sterling pieces after pickling, or is it dead?

    I was just randomly looking up on how to Solder, when The instructor kept referring to the pickle or the pickling and to not mix any other metal other than copper tools to remove your silver from the pickling for it will contaminated it. 😱 Ohh Noo I thought, but what the heck IS Pickling. Hey don’t make fun of me but up until my late 30s I found out that a 🥒 Cucumber in vinegar actually made a pickle. 💁🏼‍♀️ so when I heard them say pickling I automatically thought of vinegar but wasn’t sure until I came across your post. Thank you Very much for confirming my thought that vinegar and a whole bunch of stuff is what pickling is. However, ruining my crockpot ? THATS a whole Nother discussion. 🤨🤔😬🙃😎

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just buy a small cheap $10-20 crockpot for it. Also you can put silver or copper in the same mix with no problems. It's when you get steel into that mix that it's a problem. The steel will make a chemical reaction happen and plate everything in copper. This is why you use copper tongs to take anything out of the pickling solution. 😊👍

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, it lasts lot longer. All you really have to do with it is add water. The vinegar will not last as long and become weaker over time and you will have to add more vinegar.

    This is kind of a long one. Sorry.
    That's a very very cool tidbit about removing copper plating from brass! I'll try it with bronze and let you know how it works. I haven't worked with brass in years. Or bronze for that matter, but have some now. Hell, I haven't worked with any of this stuff since like 1985.
    My very serious question about Sparex: I'm working in my really little studio apartment & I have a small crock pot that I use for pickle. As Sparex is an acid, will the steam escaping the crock pot do damage to the wooden cupboards? I mean, if you know. I don't know whether the steam carries the acid or not. I made a circle out of a wash cloth, embedded it with baking soda and I keep on the top of the lid of the crock pot with some over hang just to maybe neutralize the acid in the steam. Shit. I should get some special paper to see if it reacts with the steam. I honestly have no clue here so anything you can add would be really helpful, and I would be grateful. I never took chemistry!
    Also want to ask if one can simply add baking soda to the Sparex until it is completely neutralized (very foamy-Idid it once, but my pickle's filthy and I need to change it!) and then dump it in the toilet or down the drain.
    I bought some fiber glass screen and cut a pot sized circle then threaded a piece of copper wire through the edge for my crock pot. I also made a little handle from copper wire so I can pick it up to get little pieces off the bottom of the pot. Works pretty good and the temp doesn't affect it. Not so sure about having the copper in there all the time though. That's probably why it gets so dirty. Black bottom pot.
    Jeez. I use my pickle for food all the time. I wonder if that's why all of my teeth disintegrated and I have indigestion after I cook with it. ;-) teehee.

    what temp must your crock pot be at, will a baby bottle heating pot work?

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just have it set to low. Acid work better/faster when hot so if the bottle heater can make it warmer than room temp it would be better than nothing. If you do use that make sure you use something that is not going to react with the acid and something you will never use with food again. 😄👍

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That sounds like fire scale or some copper plating. First make sure you have no steel in your pickle. To get this copper look off you can used the hydrogen and vinegar set up to remove the copper from the outer layer of the silver. You can also sand or buff it off if needed.

    Hi Randy, i did something wrong I think......i did some silver soldering, the pickled it......then a few days later i used the same pickle solution for copper, and the copper turned green, so getting in touch as you might know why this happened? Also when i did the copper one, i'd forgot about the baking soda step, and just left the copper piece to dry, and overnight it went very very green! like it was growing on it, did it go green because i didnt do the baking soda step? i accidently used metal , steel tongs once in the pickle....did that effect it also?

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, you did something wrong haha but it's ok.
      1. don't use steel in the pickle unless you want everything to be copper plated.
      2. You have to clean it off of it will turn green if you let it air dry, you can just use water for the most part but you want the acids and salts off the the metal of it will "rust"
      3. You can just clean the metal again using a brush and put it back into the hot pickle again for like 10-15 mins and it should clean it up just make sure to clean the acids off of it.
      Try that out and let me know if it fixes things.

    Sorry if this question has already been asked, but how do you pickle steel?

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know. I don't work with steel and if you do put steel into this kind of pick it will rust and become copper plated if the pickle has been used.

    Do you still use baking soda in water after the pickling solution #2

      Yes. 😁

    Maybe a dumb question, but if the purpose of the pickling is to make sure the surface is clean of any oxidation before soldering, then would pickling still be necessary for pieces that were just sanded?

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can sand it if you want but at some point your are going to have to pickle your work to lean off the flux

    If I choose to use pool chemicals, I.e., muriatic acid, what would the ratio of water to acid be?

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry about the late reply, sadly I have never used that for my pickle 😅

      The pH lowering solution is Sodium bisulfate not muriatic acid.

      Do you mean like a tumbler? If so, no. this is an acid that is cleaning off the glasses flux along with the oxidation. Also this is all don't minutes and not hours like a tumbler.

      I did the same thing over the weekend. You can just add water to it and heat it back up and see if you can mix it back up.

    Spareks is sol NO2 right?
    so using this making such a mixture by adding H2O to HNO3 Is created. Nitric acid in pot ?
    The fumes of such a solution are not very healthy.
    If nitric acid is formed from this after mixing with Sparex No2 with water then then it mąke sense as a safe form of storing dry acid.

    That junk is not junk. Get yourself one platinum electrode. and a plate or ring you wish to plate in copper. And apply electricity. This will clear up the copper, from the solution.
    Note: Getting the polarity wrong will only coat the platinum in copper, so switch. * Oxygen and hydrogen are made during this process, so do so in a well ventilated spot. or you could go bang.

    It would be nice to click on a button and turn this background noise off! That kind of noise is probably used in the Guantanamo Bay!
    Otherwise, the video would be very good! Thank you.
