- How I use RemNote, a flashcard spaced repetition system, to capture and memorise code and code syntax.
A couple of months ago I discovered an up and coming notetaking system, or knowledgebase, called Remnote, and it has fast become my main application for daily notetaking as well as managing my increasing volume of flashcards, particularly for programming and code snippets.
In this video I'll walkthrough why I think it has benefits over using Anki, and then how I've currently got RemNote structured for success.

In the video I mention that there is an issue with typing out answers where the answer is in a code block.
As of September 2021, the RemNote Update 1.4 now appears to have fixed typing code answers (and multi-line answers) in their flashcards! This is very exciting!!!
The mobile application is quite buggy. Keeps reloading.
The type your answer feature is gold. Gonna start using that right away!
Hey dude, Remnote is amazing, I don not quite get why it is not as much hyped as other apps.. Your practical approach is very useful, similarly under-appreciated IMO. Thank you very much for your work!
Hey Barnabas, really appreciate your comment. And you're right, RemNote is so underhyped. I look forward to it getting better and better over time.
@@LiamGower I have been looking for people who have dropped Roam Resarch in favor of Remnote to get a sense of what the switch is like.
I think Remnote is harder to get started with than others such as RoamResearch. That might be why it is having a slower growth curve.
This is great content. This is the second video of yours that addressed exactly what I was looking for. I've been doing Remnote for the past couple weeks and it's amazing. Total game changer for me. Keep up the great work. Subscribed.
Hey Nicholas, thank you for the message, it gives me a boost! Hope you're getting on well with RemNote!
This is brilliant. I will start using Remnote for memorising what I learn in coding. I'm doing a CS degree.
Amazing! Good luck with you degree and using RemNote! Share any RemNote tips you have for me haha
Hey all! I hope you enjoyed this video and learnt something from it! If you did, let me know in the comments, I'd love to hear what you think.
Anki vs Remnote
Advantages and Disadvantages?
Hey thanks for posting man! I’m looking forward to using it for foreign language learning. I don’t know if I’m full on board for using it as my PKM, but it looks great for learning a language (digital, spoken, or written). Keep it up!
In Anki I defined an Extra Back field on every note type. I put all the relevant notes there and the card asks only one piece of the note. So there are more card with the same Extra Back field. This gives me valuable context like you do in RemNote. I even can define the Extra Back field as "remember last input when adding", so the notes stay on every new card I add. Overall awesome video nevertheless, I am going to tryout RemNote.
Hey Patrick, thanks for the comment. I think this is a good idea to build extra context into your Anki notes! Nice one! Good luck with trying out RemNote 😁
How did you define the extra back field?
Hey, Mr. Gower, I have seen many tutorials on remnote on youtube I even saw the video of matte (co-founder of remnote). But your video just kicked me! I've got a good hand on remnote now for your video. Please, make some more videos on remnote. Thanks.
I'm just watching your videos today. I like them all. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Spencer! Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed them. I’ll have more to come!!
Great video. You should create snippets in a text expander application as you are creating your snippets in remnote. 👍
Hey François-Abert, can you explain what you mean!? I’m interested!
@@LiamGower For example, as you add the command "git config --global --unset user.password" as a flashcard in RemNote, I would use an application like TextExpander to create a snippet of this command. So that the next time you want to use this command you just have to use the label of the snippet (in TextExpander langage) and not have to type the whole command. Less typo. More time spared.
@@politicus1000 ahh I see what you mean, I might give this a go! I don’t think I’d set this up for every snippet, but definitely for things I repeat a lot.
@@LiamGower Of course it is not for every snippet BUT for the snippets you want/need to create, I found it is the most productive way of doing it.
Great video, I'm currently using it to learn Python as well as other PKM purposes.
Hey Nabhan! So pleased you liked it, I’m actually subscribed to you for your RemNote content too haha!
@@LiamGower I'm subbed to you as well, glad you're finding the content useful 😁
Great video Liam. Thanks for sharing that.
Cheers Kasper!
Very interesting. Thank you for this video. A new subscriber.
Thank you Jean-François!
Thanks, I have finally understood why Anki never worked for me and why Roam Research does. But - for rote learning and memorization Remnote seems to beat both.
Great vid love to see more on remnote looks very powerful
Thanks Kevin, I’ve been playing around with Remnote at work a lot these last few weeks, hopefully I’ll have more thoughts to share in videos soon!
Thanks for the video! I'm currently thinking of using RemNote myself :)
Do you mind sharing your knowledge base workflow within the programm too?
Hey Michael, thanks for your suggestion! I am looking at doing a video on this very soon, do you have any specific questions that you might want me to answer?
@@LiamGower That sounds awesome! I'll make sure to watch it!
Well I'd like to hear your approach/definition to knowledge management and how you can use RemNote to support your system.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of RemNote? How does RemNote handle attachments (Pictures, Videos, PDFs, Voice-Memos etc.)?
How do you stay organized in RemNote? How do you structure big topics/documents?
But honestly I'd probably watch any RemNote-Content if it's well made and presented :)
When you go to queue it makes you choose a cluster, you can practice them all
thanks that was very useful. have u tried notion as well , its is much more versatile but does not have flashcard feature though?
Wonderful!
Thanks for the video! I didn't know about the code block. It'll work for me. By the way, basics, but I couldn't find anywhere: Do you know how to delete rem references? I typed it incorrectly (inserted it) and now I don't know how to delete the wrong reference from the list of references ''[[ ''
Remember that I subscribed you when you have 579 subs.
Hey Prashant I appreciate that my man! 🔥
thanks for sharing, great video.
Thanks Álvaro!
Anything about the code snippet issue when answering?... Did you report it to the RemNote developers?... By the way, good content, keep it up!
I tried reporting it on the RemNote Discord a couple of months ago but didn't hear anything back. Perhaps I will try again because it would be AMAZING if they fixed this.
@Titan_Knight, the code block issue in flashcards appears to be fixed in the latest RemNote 1.4 Update! Woop!
@@LiamGower That's Great!
Do you still make Anki cards or do you mainly use RemNote now?
Hey since I'm still adjusting to RemNote, I'm using both Anki and RemNote at the moment. A big reason for this is I have a lot of content in Anki, and I also downloaded a number of shared decks! I haven't explored if there's an easy Anki -> RemNote export option, maybe there is!?
Your videos are so good. The walls are too “empty” tho. Try to make the background a little “busy.”
Hey thanks so much! I think that is good feedback, I love a bit of quirkiness and warmth to the background of people's videos like Ali Abdaal, Thomas Frank, Matt D'Avella . Good news is, I'm moving house soon and I will try my best to start adding a bit of "busy-ness". Thanks for watching!
@@LiamGower oh, great! can't wait to see the new "busy" background.
👏🙌
Man this is awesome. I've been obsessing over Anki and I would use HTML to link to ressources. For example string formatting in Python I would have specific questiond and a wiki link so I can review the whole Topic. That works however this really is a step up imo.
I'm just wondering how well I can use this to study maths. Do you know if it supports LaTeX vor mathjax like anki does?
I already know I'm gonna be fiddling around with this taking away some of my study time for uni, but it seems like its worth my time to see if I like it.
Hi Darren sorry for my delay in getting back to you! It does indeed support LaTeX, to enter the mode for typing in LaTeX, you just type $$ and then you're good to go. So definitely give it a go!
If you read RemNote's Update Blog, and search for "LaTeX" you'll see the details on it. www.remnote.io/Updates
Good video
Thanks Olivier!

is the typing issue fixed?
Hey not yet unfortunately 😔
@@LiamGower Hey Liam! Thanks for all ur vids that helped me get into Anki, and right now helping me get into RemNote :-) I would say my decision for RemNote already has been made deep inside myself, but the mentioned typing issue (type in the answer only activatable for all the flashcards at once instead of individually), is still holding me back. Do you think this is an issue that is easy to fix and therefore is likely to be fixed in the near future? Has there been any response of the developers on that topic? highly appreciate ur answer..
Matt
@@toktok3796 Hey I'm so excited to see that I think this typing issue is now resolved! I've been testing it out on the latest RemNote 1.4 Update, and it is working smoothly! Super happy to see this, give it a go!
@@LiamGower thanks so much! will check it out!
I am assuming it does not support syntax highlighting for different languages? That is a huge con for me.
Hi Matt, it does support many languages. Basically you can convert a "Rem" (note) to a "code block" by typing /code. Then you have a nicely formatted code block that supports so many languages, all the mains ones I recognise. Hope that helps!
@@LiamGower That sounds great. I will give it a go. Thanks. Great video.
@@LiamGower I am learning Python and I need to find a way to structure the learning. I might follow your example. Have a Python then drill down to Strings -> Formatting, Converting, Floats,, etc. Not sure yet. Any note taking ideas would be helpful if you have any.
99 % of that stuff, anki already does it
what I see, is that RemNote seems easier to start with and options are more accesible and easy to find
Remnote is nice because the way you make cards is more contextual . Sometimes you can make a card in anki and while you do know the answer sometimes you don’t know the bigger picture of that piece of information: that’s why I think remnotes is better in that regard. Other then that,, yah they are pretty similar and if anki works for you then that’s great
Let me guess Obsidian next? lol. Tutorial purgatory with a side of productivity tool hell :/
Haha, I know what you mean, there’s so many different apps out there, and I guess I happen to be in limbo at the moment. I’ve got an upcoming video though where I plan on comparing them!
Wait until you discover Super Memo.
Haha, I actually checked that out about a year or two ago, and was amazed at the concept, I however couldn't manage to get into it, I found it quite overwhelming. Would you recommend any articles or videos that could get me started down the right path, I would be keen to give it a go again!
It seems a bit complicated. Aren't you tired of writing all these bullets?
I think there’s 2 things here to consider:
1. You’re right in that, one should be selective in what information is actually of value to store and keep referencing. If I put every snippet I ever used, it would indeed be exhausting, it is about striking a balance.
2. Maybe checkout my other RemNote video called ‘work journalling with Remnote’. In this video I show how you can essentially make ‘templates’, which if used correctly means we can save a lot of time and typing of mundane / repetitive structure
Thanks for watching!
