Well done. But you should eat it as we actually do in Sweden. Flat hardbread, red union, boild potatoes and creamfresh. Make a wrap and put the fich in the wrap. Eat directly from the can itself is just awful even for us, so respect for that :) Regards from Sweden

I love surströmming. It smells, but if you prepare it like the Nordic folks do, it's really great! As the tin is pressurised, open the surströmming in a basin of water. Wash it, gut it, and wrap it in buttered 'tunnbröd' (a type of sweetened flat bread) with slices of almond potatoes and diced onion.
Frankly, who needs another "stinky fish challange" with coughing and choking foreigners? Anyway here are some basic rules from Sweden when it comes to eating surströmming (or fermented Baltic sea herring). Yes, it is smelly and salty, but for some reason surströmming has survived more than 500 years of recorded history in Sweden. Fermentation has been used by mankind for thousand of years to conserve food (probably in shortage of salt). Surströmming is produced in Norrland (northern part of Sweden) and mostly eaten during late summer or early fall. The traditional premier date is on the third Thursday of August. Here are some basic guidelines. (1) Surströmming should always be eaten together with good friends. (2) Leave your children and pets at some other place before the meal (kids will hate the smell, dogs will love it). (3) Always open the tin can and serve surströmming outdoors (for obvious reasons). The can is best opened under water in a bucket. (4) Never ever eat surstromming straight from the tin can - and peel off the skin! (5) Always be sure to serve the right side dishes with surströmming (use google or see video below). No one in Sweden ever eat just surstromming. (6) After every bite, clear your throat with a sip of ice cold Absolut Vodka - blue label, 80 proof (some prefer milk as an non alcoholic option). The CHALLANGE is to give surströmming the respect it deserves and it will give you a food experience that will last a lifetime! See this link for surströmming being served by an expert in the right Swedish environment to a delighted Jamie Oliver! @
You shouldn't really take it too personally Per, it's just like all the vegemite challenges out there. No one eats it like put in front of people in those challenges, and there's nowhere near as many rules on how to eat vegemite!
Most importantly, keep it in the fridge between buying it and opening it. A can that´s been in the mail from Sweden to Australia, and not kept in temperatures between +4° C till +6° C (fridge temperatures) shouldn´t be eaten.
The dad reminds me of the American actor Alan Ruck who starred in the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It's incredible that there are parrots flying around in your back yard. That bird sound would take some getting used to.
Hi Jenn Ross, i see what you mean... yes you get used to the parrots and birds after a while, every time we get visitors from overseas they can't believe the bird life here.
the can of Surstromming should be punctured in a bucket of water, also it's a season item, and suppose to be used as a sandwhich with potatoes, onions, and a dairy sauce like yogurt. But doing that it that way is hardcore and awesome

it's actually good. Don't mind the smell, dunk it.
