It's so nice to have a plant expert speaking to me in my own Canadian accent. Love from Ontario. Congrats on getting a sponsor. Hope you get to 100,000 subscribers soon.
I do put lights on everything. Even yesterday in my cold chamber where I have my eustoma in for a 45-to60 degrees germination temp, I installed a light.
Great information as per usual! I struggle with the grow lights, mainly because I start different seeds in a 72 or 121 tray. Some come up, some don't. never really sure when to uncover or when to shut the lights off. its a HUGE learning curve, but with your helpful videos, I'll get there.
I used to turn lights on once I saw the seedlings starting to emerge. But a few years ago that practice cost me (very leggy plants) so nowadays I make sure the lights are on. Seems like a good/bad start effects the entire season, don’t know if that’s true but it seemed that way.
I’m so sorry for your loss Ashley. You’ve really been through “it” . I’m wondering if you plant your tomatoes and peppers deeper when potting up and , if so, how much deeper ? Is it more beneficial? I wish you healing and peace ❤
I germinate all my seeds in a baggy on a wet paper towel, then once germinated they go into starter soil. Usually the baggies are sitting in the grow tent getting only indirect light from the grow lights. After watching this video, I am going to try and place the baggies directly under the lights to see if I get a less leggy plant. I thought my seedlings did pretty good with my current system but I now have to see if they can do better. Thanks for this video!
Finally a use for my cheapo Blurples that have been gathering dust. Violas seem to often say to start in darkness. I use 6 cells to start seeds, once 1 of 6 pops I've placed them under my lights and the others then proceed to sprout as well... so seems the darkness is overrated.
I always use red led lights the entire time indoors. Now, I may just take them out into the greenhouse after your suggestion. We do have many grey days in western Ny.
Great video today! I have my heat mat in a dark area because it’s the only space I have. But once I see any sign of germination like a white bump in the soil, I move the seedling under lights. I use to germ without artificial light by a windowsill and having an extra light now makes a huge difference. I garden in Toronto. Could you talk more about advantageous roots for tomatoes? Other gardeners recommend planting tomatoes deeply in order to “get more roots” but never mention that it’s a different type of root than the ones getting nutrients. What other plants put out advantageous roots? Is it still a good idea to plant tomatoes deeply? Thank you!
One thing to be careful with using red light to germinate is if your light source is also giving off a lot of far-red light. The way the phytochrome chemical seems to work is by switching between forms that absorb red or far-red light. When it absorbs red light the light-sensitive seed is signaled to start germinating, but when it absorbs far-red light it switches back to signal continued dormancy. So while blurples should work alright, reddish lights meant for flowering would be giving off enough far-red wavelengths to be counterproductive.
I wish you Well in your Journey with Healing Ashley! Been growing with you a while thanks for all advice and or tips. My demographic 34 BLK Male in Cleveland Ohio
I use shop lights. Cheap from Amazon. Long as you have correct kelvin and lumens you’re good right? This year I bought a handful of 13,000 lumens for my arsenal. The others are 4400.
Ok - so I use lights. But I always wonder - should those lights be on 24/7 constant or or should they be on a timer to provide some dark time? Do plants need a daily period of darkness for their chemistry?
Hullo Miss Ashley. Nice vid about lighting. For the financially challenged (at one time or another), use what you have but put them super close like Ashley said. Fortunately plant lights are getting cheaper in price. LED plastic bar lights are an example. I've had the same 3 tier grow light stand for 30 years. They are in my bedroom in front of a window... for more light! So...Light, heat, soil and water...ta-da!
Fodder for my rabbits is only time I restrict light at germination. I also try to remove from heat as soon as I see sprouts on all seeds to reduce leggyness. Hot peppers on heat mat now, sweet peppers next up then tomatoes.
@GardeningInCanada gives more uniform growth and takes less room . I think increases biomass as they stretch but i mainly do it for uniform growth in fodder.
Yes I use grow lights, the plants seem to like it and the LED lights are cheaper to run than the fluorescent lights. And I use natural light too, when it's there.
Hello! I'm Nana, and I'm thirteen years old I really enjoyed your video. I'm a new subscriber, and I have a question. In my country, we don't have specialized plant growth lights. Can I use regular LED lights for home lighting? What are the technical specifications I should consider? I'm looking for scientific advice from you to help me choose the right lighting. I'm planting decorative flowers, and any guidance you provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you💙💙
@@GardeningInCanada Thank you so much for your quick response! I have some additional questions about using LED lights for plant growth. Can you advise me on a specific color temperature (in Kelvin) for the lights and the optimal luminance? Is there a particular light intensity (in lumens) I should look for? Additionally, should I use separate led tube lights for each color - one for blue, one for red, and one for white? I'm truly grateful for any additional guidance you can provide. Thank you 💙💙
Wait! Tomatoes!? Are you saying it may be useless to bury them deeper? A lot of people here (Atlantic Canada) do plant them sideways or deeper so they grow more roots....I do bury them like this but I never did an experiment with both methods
Question, is there any insecticide or fungicide benefits to using neem cake/meal? I've been unable to find a definitive answer to this question. Most resources either mention using it to create a tea or solely focus on its fertilizer properties, neglecting to address the direct impact of neem cake/meal in the soil. Stuff isn't exactly cheap, at least when used as an amendment so some insight would be greatly appreciated.
It’s considered a systemic pesticide. Meaning it’s just in the plants “makeup” if you will. The idea being that it tastes icky or exerts a negative influence on whatever the pest issue is. It does work for insects there is enough research to support that. The issue becomes pests do become resistant to it. And the other problem can be the quality of the neem itself. Some forms of neem are much more insidious than others
My lights are set up when inlace the tray. when I turn them on depends on what I'm planting. If it's something that "requires" light they go on right away if not I wait a bit.. that being said my grow rack is in front of a window that gets daylight (sunlight when I'm lucky) at least 6 hrs a day, probably more. So even without lights there's light
"How odd" Imagine a bunch of seeds that seem to adapt to growing on planet, like ours? You know, where the atmosphere seems to scatter blue? and red seems to get thru? I always shake my head when the newest fad in gardening, says, "do this new thing." We have 4.5 billion years of an experiment that we can look back on... for how to grow.
Wait..... tomatoes! Is it good or useless to bury tomato plants deeper!? Here (east coast Canada) a lot of people bury them deeper or on the side!? Got some science facts to this?
We should always work with the latin name. I am still astonish that even the seed producer don't even use it. they are the one who should educate people. I Always use the latin name . therefore you are sure of what you buy.

Literally the only PlantTuber that I would listen to and heed their advice, without verifying or getting another opinion.
Awe jeez that’s kind. But always keep your mind open I’m not always the answer for every situation
Always always verify and explore other opinions.
Ok, I may have overstated/oversimplified my respect for her knowledge/this channel.
No blind faith.
Got it.
Forgive me.

Keep the covered till everyone is up I’ll do a video on weather or not you need to cover.
U should make a video on “ do humidity domes help seeds sprout faster?” Lovely video again !!!!!!!!!!!
Great suggestion!
I’ve always had success with humidity domes. Less success without.
I have Mylar lining everything solid in my greenhouse, like the back insulated south wall.
I've draped it over my grow stand.
As usual another video spot on for questions I've had for a long time. I've struggled knowing if they should have light or not
I’m a lights on immediately type person.
As I grow cacti, I always use growlights to germinate. Most of the cacti are positively photoblastic, so this is a requirement.

Once again, an excellent explanation! I use lights on everything except my jars of sprouts, because I want them to stretch out
Yes that’s true too. Sprouts and microgreens
As soon as seeds go in my trays lights go on. I have actual grow lights and a par meter so light intensity is controlled. But 12-13 on 11-12 off.
Sorry for the losses you experienced this past year⚘️

Interesting how the packaging didn’t even know what to do with light in that instance 😅

And read and follow the planting instructions! Johnny's seeds , High Mowing Seeds have REALLY good growing instructions. Use a timer if you have one.
Yes! Absolutely agree
Fodder for my rabbits is only time I restrict light at germination. I also try to remove from heat as soon as I see sprouts on all seeds to reduce leggyness. Hot peppers on heat mat now, sweet peppers next up then tomatoes.
Interesting! Is it considered more palatable when they are leggy? Is that the purpose of waiting
@GardeningInCanada gives more uniform growth and takes less room . I think increases biomass as they stretch but i mainly do it for uniform growth in fodder.
Great information here as usual.
Thank you so much.
Love from Germany.
Glad you enjoyed! I accidentally scheduled this really early 😅
I just put them in a south facing window. No grow lights no heat mats. Always had great results.
That is awesome! You must have zero trees near by.

I use the trays like you have with the lights in the dome. I find they get very leggy. Any suggestions
