  • In this episode of JDM Masters Initial D series, fiction versus real location, we bring you to the setting of the Fifth Stage battle of Project D against Spiral Zero’s Z33 and S15.
Nanamagari (七曲り) is the home course of Team Spiral. It is actually the Old Tokaido that spans Hakone and Odawara in the Kanagawa prefecture. It is perhaps well known for its 13 consecutive hairpins.
Project D's penultimate battle with Team Spiral was held here during the rainy and foggy weather.

It's crazy that Initial D is based off of real life, just imagine back in the 80s and 90s people coming to meet at these mountains for a nice night of drifting. Japan has some of the best driving roads in the world, no wonder drifting started here.
I am glad the late night car culture of Japan is still around, its just much more underground now.

Yeah, the actual circuits in Japan are amazing, but nothing beats drifting the mountain passes late night with your buddies. You can go 2-3 hours outside of Tokyo and find some untouched roads. Tourist don't normally venture in the country side where the nice roads are.
Cant forgot the Wangan in the city though, different style but still fun.

Over here where I live (Catalunya, Spain) there's many people who do touge driving every weekend similarly to initial D. I participated for a while but I had an accident a while back and now I'm taking a break. Ironically I wasn't going fast when I crashed, I just went over some ice patch and lost control of the car and hit the guard rail. Anyways the driving is usually very dangerous and the cars are usually more powerful than my 2.0 200hp n/a type r so I basically feel I shouldn't do that stuff anymore, however it's really addictive and the roads here are unbelievable.

I took a tour 2 months ago in Japan and we were getting a ride on a bus down to Shizuoka. my jaw just DROPPED when the bus driver was driving on these narrow roads. It would be so fun in just about any car (or even bus in this case) to just drive on it. You see it in animes, you see it as real life pictures, and you even see videos of people driving on those roads but all those just do not compare to seeing those roads in person. Eye opening experience.

Love the content guys keep up the good work. I miss the good old days in Japan when more people were drifting and cars were dirt cheap. Nowadays all the cars are ultra expensive with Canada and the U.S. importing. With all of us getting older, cops cracking down and the automotive industry changing to eco friendly it just seems like younger people aren't into cars here as much as they were in the past. Present day just isn't what it was 😔

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's actually the other way around - companies aren't making cheap sports cars anymore because younger people aren't nearly as interested in cars AND MORE IMPORTANTLY don't really have the money to buy new. Econoboxes and crossovers have always been in demand, and sadly that's what sells... although at the same time there's been a bit of a trickle-down effect where companies are starting to try and make their mass-market cars at least somewhat sporty as well - like Mazda and Honda have been doing this whole time.

During my time in Hakone I did see and drive on Nanamagari and learned the following (though a few anecdotes may not be the most reliable source, make of it what you will.)
-The drifted road is called the Seven Hairpins because drifters would primarily use the seven hairpins above the turn before the road crossed under the National Route bridge.
-Drifting was primarily done uphill on the hairpins alone, and seldom or maybe never downhill (believable as going downhill on this road, you do feel how steep it is even compared to other "touge".)
5th Stage made the road much more comfortable looking than it is and the battle against Okuyama felt cut short. Still, a nice video and I'm happy to see the locations compared side by side.

I was here driving an EK9 in late November - getting to Hakone from the north you could see the fog from Gotemba - the fog in Initial D was definitely not a stretch of the truth. We were there for a few days and every morning was this foggy. But it was a gorgeous area when the sun came out! We purposely stayed about 5 minutes down the road from Nanamagari so we had to go up and down it often. ;)

I guess Keiichi Tsuchiya also participated in many Street races back then and he must be very popular..
One more rumour i heard about Takumi Fujiwara is that his Dad was a Cocaine smuggler and he Tuned his car to our run any cop car on Touge.. That's why he also trained his son to out run any cop..
That's also makes sense to me because they can't maintain a race car on mere Tofu delivery shop..

The Iroh touge with the inside hairpin jumps from the sw20 race. It'd be cool if you could find someone who had atleast attempted the shortcut. Yes I know its an anime, but as you guys said in your video the racers were often based on real people, the roads are based on, or actually are, real roads. I find it hard to believe that something so nuts was something he came up with completely out of the air for the manga, I would bet that someone has at least tried it.

My interpretation of the fujiwara zone is like a point where the car is supposed to be braking but instead it accelerates. Like Ryouske said Fujiwara has an extreme sense when driving his 86, and he knows the exact points where he has to brake and where he can accelerate, and that was increased when he started driving the impreza which is a 4wd. So in anime logic he managed to absorb the cornering style of a 4wd into his rwd car and manage that insane exiting speed in the corners.
