According to the vedas the human mind is always fluctuating and can be in any of five states
    Monkey Mind or Kshipta Mind:
This type of mind is chaotic, fickle, restless constantly shifting from one thought or emotion to other. This kind of mind flits between multiple desires and is prone to anger and emotional disturbance.
Imagine a student preparing for an important exam but unable to concentrate. He checks his phone every few minutes, worries about the future, and keeps jumping from one topic to another without fully understanding anything. His mind is in a constant state of chaos, unable to stay on one thing.
Donkey Mind or Moodh Magaj :
Dull, lazy, inactive state of mind which has lot of mental fatigue and lack of clarity as also sadness, depression, hopelessness and poor concentration. Not concerned about its own development. Living in darkness.
It is difficult for this kind of mind to think clearly or take action. They feel mentally heavy, lacking motivation or enthusiasm for daily tasks. Their mind is foggy and inactive, unable to respond effectively.
Butterfly Mind or Vikshipta : Partially focussed mind, it is focussed for some time but is quickly distracted, a scattered mind. Also focussed for negative purposes eg very focussed on how to steal !
Crane Mind or Ekagra Mind : One pointed mind where the mind fully engages with the present moment and is in a state of heightened concentration. This kind of mind is inward focussed not distracted.
An artist deeply engrossed in painting for hours, losing track of time, completely absorbed in their work. Their mind is fully engaged, and distractions fade away. This state of deep concentration leads to peak creativity and productivity.
Mastered Mind or Nirudhha Mind : Fully absorbed mind, where the mind is completely still and no longer agitated or disturbed by external or internal factors. We experience this kind of pure calmness in meditation where you are completely absorbed in the present moment.
A yogi or an advanced meditator sitting in deep meditation with no distracting thoughts. Their mind is completely still, free from external disturbances, and in a state of pure awareness. This is the highest level of mental mastery leading to inner peace and self-realization.
