Re the Faulkner (which I also read and enjoyed this month), there’s a bit in Conversations With Eudora Welty that kinda blew my mind. When asked later in life about the influence of As I Lay Dying on her short stories from the early 1940s, she replied, “No that was a coincidence. You know, Faulkner was out of print when I was growing up. Everything I have of Faulkner’s I’d bought through searching in secondhand bookstores in order to read them. He wasn’t in the libraries. He wasn’t to be had-at least in Mississippi. I don’t think he was to be had anywhere. He was out of print, for a long time.” It’s hard to imagine that now. Great wrap-up Pat, as always. 😊
I read as I lay dying many years ago. I didn't like it, but maybe it was my age, but I did like Faulkner's writing. The next book I read was Absalom Absalom which I thought was great. And the sound and the fury is a favorite.
@majelthesurreal5723 Yes, I didn’t like As I Lay Dying when I was younger either, but I did this time around. Absalom, Absalom is my favorite Faulkner, I think.
I remember Peyton Place! I think my grandmother watched it, as well. You don't hear it mentioned much now, but for a time, the title was synonymous with scandal - as in "this town is a Peyton Place" which I believe is a line from the 60's song, "Harper Valley PTA" by Jeannie C. Riley. I believe Dolly Parton might have performed it in her shows for a time, too. That's "high-class trash"! LOL! Great video!
