In 2022 Elon Musk had a pretty bad year. However, there's reason to suspect that Tesla's valuation (and therefore Musks) could fall further as we head into a new year. So here's what's happening and why Tesla could fall to $50 a share

Not at all surprising as we all saw this coming... Musk consistently over-promised, but the simple reality of Li-Ion battery vs. diesel energy density is something that cannot be denied. While I do think that electric trucks and vans for local deliveries are feasible and potentially extremely useful, there is just no way that an electric semi truck can beat a diesel one for long haul trucking. The math simply does not work!

The EV companies other than Tesla are selling far, far fewer EVs than Tesla. Most of them lose money on every EV they sell. If they sell more electric vehicles, they lose more money. But Tesla makes money on each car. Until the other companies figure out how to greatly reduce their manufacturing costs, Tesla will stay way out ahead.

There really needs to be more nuance to this. Tesla does have a massive share of the electric car market: 21% last year, with the next-nearest rivals the Chinese SAIC with 13%, and Volkswagen Group with 10%. And from just four models, compared to 9 for VW Group.
There are legitimate concerns about their ongoing delays, variable quality control, some dubious ideas in feature design and company management, and the negative PR value of Elon Musk. But they have achieved a hugely dominant position in the EV space, one of the most dominant positions in a global market sector for any postwar car manufacturer, and any criticism with even a hint of balance really needs to be leavened by that.

Guys, this is not it. Comparing different companies on their PE-ratio is just very shortsighted. Yes, the PE-ratios of other automakers are low compared to Tesla and well, most companies despite the industry. It's beacuse of many reasons, one of which WallStreet expect those car companies to make less money in the future. They currently sell highly profitable ICE vehicles, which will eventually be phased out. Not only is producing an electric vehicle very difficult, it's also much more expensive. So, altough their current PE-ratio makes their stock looks cheap, their earnings will probably not grow and will most likely shrink overtime. With shrinking earnings, to keep the PE-ratio the same, the price of the stock has to go down..

@cat Uhh, my comment is meant for the creators of this video... And to answer your question, yes I do think Wallstreet have this figuered out. That's why the PE-ratios of the traditional automakers is as low as it is..

May I point out that concluding that EV customers are less loyal to car brands based on the fact that they tend to trade in cars from different manufacturers doesn't make a lot of sense. EVs are very new to the market and there aren't a lot of choices or well stablished reputation for them, plus most brands don't even have a (decent) EV in their line up, so most people wanting to buy an EV for the first time naturally HAVE to change brands, simply because there are so few viable options, specially at lower price brackets. The true test of EV loyalty is what they buy AFTER their first EV. Do they stick to their brand or look for something else? Tesla customers, for one part, seem to be fiercly loyal, seeing how they put up with bad customer service and long waits for newer models.

Electric vehicles are not only difficult to produce, but also much more expensive. I’d love to see how these “competitors” ramp up production of their EVs before judging whether Tesla survives. Tesla built the world’s largest battery plant, invented new tech to put in the batteries and to build them at scale and they’re still struggling with production. I don’t even want to imagine how hard it is for legacy manufacturers to compete for the limited battery production capacity outside of Tesla’s. Sure there are 50+ new EVs coming to market but where exactly are they getting their batteries from?

    • @Jupa
      @Jupa ปีที่แล้ว +1

The Ioniq 5 has already overtaken Tesla in every aspect of an EV.
Tesla built the gigafactories for assembly. Not battery production in itself, which is actually done by CATL, who supplies battery’s to Tesla, Hyundai, BMW and Toyota. Also SK One is the fifth largest producer too. They supply Hyundai and Kia.
It’s confusing but yes they produce battery packs but the batteries are supplied from the same companies that work and do more business with other manufacturers. This is also why production and revenue at gigafactories are waning. Nevertheless it doesn’t seem like their giga advantage actually holds weight as competitors arent playing catch up anymore with suppliers already in. Infact it’s Tesla that only recently are trying to wiggle out of their dependence of external suppliers, so while they have huge factories they aren’t producing their own in house batteries. They have no edge at the moment against Toyota, BMW, Hyundai etc. they’re all limited by sharing the same suppliers. So you’re kind of wrong on nearly, actually everything, that you said here.

Ok, I understand the argument that Tesla has struggled with the supply chain. But you are not comparing with the competition. Tesla is the company with the fastest delivery. They are doing much better than the others, especially BMW and Mercedes.
Furthermore, their profit margins are almost as big as BMW, and they are producing fewer EVs than Tesla. To add to this, I can only expect these margins to grow with a more streamlined production process with the addition of the GigaPress.

I’ve had two. Model Y 2020 and then swapped for Model 3 2022 (work related).
When it was time to return the model 3 I was already waiting to see it go.
The model Y had shoddy QC issues. Panel gaps, jarring interior and door panel issues. The few buttons that exist got stodgy. But I didn’t care it wasn’t my car so whatever.
Model 3 the quality was fine. Not Mercedes level, but it wasn’t jarring so it was good. The problem wasn’t the build quality anymore but the tech/software. Specifically the auto assist functions.
I’ve driven dozens of cars thousands of miles with lane assist and radar cruise. Not one of them felt as awry and stressful as the Tesla’s. Especially when it’s method lane keeping is by bumping into the road lines and then correct itself to bump into the other line continuously. Even on the roads I’ve seen other Tesla’s and I can tell they’ve activated the ‘self drive’ by how they play the pong with the road lines continuously.
It’s like baby sitting a potential death trap. It didn’t take the stress out of driving it made it more mentally taxing.
So naturally I just stopped using it except for cruise control and even then only when the roads clear enough and during the day because they made a software update to make the self drive camera lenient rather than radar.
Even with the caution of deactivating its groundbreaking self driving tech. It still wasn’t enough for it to resist the urge to not kill me.
The final straw was during a drive in an empty motorway at night. 75mph or so, using my own hands and feet to get home as if it wasn’t a brand new £55k car. From literally nothing it decided to completely mash the brakes from 75 to a halt no time or control given to me to at least take it to the hard shoulder. And then it glued itself in the middle of an open motorway lane for what felt like a lifetime (maybe 20-30 seconds maybe more i wasn’t counting on account of nearly having a stroke).
If there was a car behind me it would’ve been a write off absolutely. Hell it probably have me whiplash anyway from the jolt. Then it decided to give me back my Drive gear and go home like nothing happened. Since then I was terrified of using it. I contact service support but this wasn’t unique to me. I went on the Tesla forums and this is a well known occurrence. But seemingly given different responses from service support. Mine service person, which was entirely online btw, just did a super cool futuristic diagnosis via the cloud. They then said they’ve looked into my logging data and updated the system and it is now resolved. We will close the ticket now kthxbye.
Tesla is not good neither mechanically nor in its technical development. It doesn’t help that the lads back in the Tesla forums would defend it by saying ‘ICE cars always do this stuff it’s normal why do you always see those on the side of the road?’ Just complete denial instead of urging Tesla to get their shit together.
From then on I couldn’t drive that car in the motorway with any passengers if I had any good conscience. Which is still pathetic because even if it was going to kill me I was still risking the lives of other drivers. And there was no way out of that, I didn’t use any of the electronic assists and yet it wouldn’t give me the privilege to bear full responsibility to control it. It felt nauseating being a secret liability to other road users like a drunk driver would be.
So I was waiting eagerly to get rid of it, so I can start driving with passengers again on long drives.

How many cars does Tesla sell every quarter, compared to one year before? And how many do the old manufacturers, compared to their own previous numbers? And how much profit does Tesla make on every car? And how much profit do the old manufactures make? These figures show fundamental differences between a company that sustains a very strong growth, and companies that struggle to maintain their old stable sales and revenues. In addition, those companies have often massive debts, so a reduction of revenues can have dramatic consequences for them, while for Tesla it is going to be less damaging.
